Rare Diseases of the Orbit.

This article provides an overview of rare orbital diseases. Congenital malformations, inflammatory diseases, benign and malignant neoplasias are described. Although it represents a relatively small area of the body the orbit contains multiple different tissues. Therefore, a great variety of diseases can be found within the orbital space. That is the reason, why both the completeness and the level of detail in the description of particular diseases must be somewhat limited. Nevertheless, clinical manifestations, important aspects of diagnosis, treatment strategies, and, when specific data are a…

[Inflammatory diseases of the orbit].

Inflammatory conditions belong to the most important diseases of the orbit. Children and adolescents are mostly affected and the most common cause is secondary pathogen invasion from acute sinusitis. However in adults most cases involve idiopathic orbital inflammation, previously termed pseudotumor orbitae. Clinical presentation may include painful exophthalmus, skin redness and warming, chemosis and disturbed eye motility. The challenge for imaging investigations, mainly a combination of CT scanning and MRI, is to distinguish inflammatory from malignant conditions, to define the extent of les

Orbital inflammatory disease.

Orbital inflammatory disease (OID), commonly known as orbital pseudotumour, is an inflammatory disease of unknown cause. It has different forms of presentation and different degrees of severity. Its variable nature is the main cause for this disease to be misdiagnosed and misclassified. The prognosis of OID depends on the tissues affected and the histology. OID usually responds favourably to systemic steroid treatment. However, empiric steroids may mask other underlying diseases that respond well to this treatment as well, namely, IgG4-related disease or lymphoproliferative disorders. This fac

Diseases of the Eyelids and Orbit.

The eyelids and orbit encompass intricate bony and soft tissue structures that work harmoniously in concert to protect, support, and nourish the eye in order to facilitate and maintain its function. Insult to periorbital and orbital anatomy can compromise orbital and ocular homeostasis. This article provides a foundational overview of eyelid and orbital anatomy, as well as common and key disorders that may confront internists and medical subspecialists.

[Diseases and Surgery of the Orbit].

Most orbital diseases are rarely diagnosed in the clinic. Because the consequences for the eye can be severe, it is important to recognize the signs of orbital disease early in order to initiate the correct diagnostic and therapeutic steps in good time. This article presents the basics of the systematics, diagnostics and therapy of orbital diseases in preparation for the specialist examination for ENT medicine. Some orbital diseases are typical manifestations of systemic diseases (e. g. Graves' disease) or typical complications of diseases in the vicinity of the orbit (e. g. orbital complicati…

Orbital inflammatory disease.

OBJECTIVES: To familiarize rheumatologists and internists with the signs, symptoms, and management of orbital inflammatory disease (OID). METHODS: A comprehensive literature review related to OID was performed and reported from the perspectives of rheumatology, ophthalmology, and radiology. RESULTS: OID is a general term encompassing inflammatory diseases that affect some or all of the structures contained within the orbit external to the globe. Orbital involvement as a part of the initial symptom complex is not uncommon for systemic diseases such as Graves' disease, Wegener's granulomatosis

Artificial intelligence in orbital diseases: Opportunities, challenges, and future horizons.

Orbital diseases-including thyroid eye disease, tumors, inflammation, fractures, vascular lesions, infections, and congenital abnormalities-are uncommon but clinically consequential. Because orbital diseases are heterogeneous and generate multimodal data, artificial intelligence (AI) is well-positioned to support their evaluation and management. We explore the current relationship between AI and orbital diseases and propose future directions. Four questions are addressed. First, why do orbital diseases need AI? Current orbital care remains limited by manual, observer-dependent measurements, mu…

Applications of three-dimensional printing in orbital diseases and disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To comprehensively review the applications of advanced three-dimensional printing technology in the management of orbital abnormalities. RECENT FINDINGS: Three-dimensional printing has added value in the preoperative planning and manufacturing of patient-specific implants and surgical guides in the reconstruction of orbital trauma, congenital defects and tumor resection. In view of the costs and time, it is reserved as strategy for large and complex craniofacial cases, in particular those including the bony contour. There is anecdotal evidence of a benefit of three-dimensio

IgG4-related Orbital Disease Presenting as an Orbital Apex Lesion.

IgG4-related disease is an uncommon multisystem inflammatory disease characterized by tissue infiltration by IgG4 plasma cells, extensive fibrosis, and sclerosing inflammation. Diffuse orbital involvement extending to the orbital apex and cavernous sinus has been reported, but a solitary well-circumscribed lesion at the apex has not been previously reported. Herein, we report a unique case of IgG4-related orbital disease presenting as a solitary well-circumscribed orbital apex lesion causing subacute visual decline in a 45-year-old male. MRI demonstrated bilateral lacrimal gland and infraorbit

IgG4 related orbit disease - An unusual cause of an orbital mass.

IgG4-related disease is a newly described systemic autoimmune and allergic disease, characterized histologically by a fibroinflammatory response with IgG4 plasma cells. It was initially described as affecting the pancreas, but commonly involves the head and neck region as well. While a biopsy is essential for definitive diagnosis, cross sectional imaging may be the initial modality which may suggest this entity. We describe a case of pathologically proven IgG4 related disease which highlights some key radiologic features seen in this entity. Our case highlights some key radiological features o

Pterional orbital decompression in diseases with acute increase of intraorbital pressure.

BACKGROUND: Orbital cellulitis as well as traumatic or spontaneous intraorbital hemorrhages can lead to an acute rise of intraorbital pressure, threatening the function of orbital vascular, muscular and neural structures. The treatment of this rare entity with extended pterional orbital decompression is described in comparison with other methods of orbital decompression. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1991 and 2000 the authors treated 16 patients with sight-threatening acute elevations of intraorbital pressure due to orbital cellulitis (3 patients) and spontaneous (3 patients), postoperative (
