Orbital spindle cell tumors with neural differentiation represent an uncommon and diagnostically challenging entity in clinical practice. We report the case of an 82-year-old man with a history of treated rectal adenocarcinoma, who presented with progressive orbital pain and right-sided proptosis. Computed tomography revealed a soft tissue mass located at the orbital apex, without evidence of bone erosion. Orbital exenteration was performed, and histopathological examination demonstrated an infiltrative high-grade spindle cell neoplasm with a fascicular growth pattern, moderate pleomorphism, a

Myxoid epithelioid sarcoma is a rare morphologic variant of epithelioid sarcoma characterized by abundant myxoid stroma and frequent loss of SMARCB1/INI1 expression. Orbital involvement is exceptionally uncommon. We report a case of a SMARCB1-deficient malignant orbital neoplasm with features overlapping myxoid epithelioid sarcoma in a 61-year-old man presenting with visual disturbance. Imaging studies revealed a 2.5-cm medial orbital mass without evidence of another primary lesion. The tumor was excised without prior biopsy. Histologically, the lesion was predominantly composed of abundant my

A case occurred of sclerosing chronic dacryoadenitis in lobules of ectopic lacrimal gland tissue diagnosed by fine needle aspiration biopsy performed under computed tomographic guidance. This choristomatous lesion caused unilateral proptosis and clinically simulated a neoplasm. This is the first report of cytologic diagnosis of orbital ectopic lacrimal gland tissue using fine needle aspiration biopsy. The potential hazard of regarding glandular inclusions derived from inadvertent use of a needle on a normal lacrimal gland or glands as indicating metastatic neoplasms is stressed.

Malignant masses of the orbit include a large variety of neoplasms of epithelial or mesenchymal origin. The treatment of orbital malignancies is an essential interdisciplinary field of medicine that integrates ENT medicine, facial surgery, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, oncology and radiology. The main symptom of malignant orbital masses is the exophthalmos. A symptom that can help to differentiate a benign from a malignant orbital mass can be the pain. The main diagnostic tool is the MRI including new sequences like DWI and DCE.After presenting symptoms and diagnostic strategies of malignant o

360 patients with unilateral exophthalmos were examined with echoophthalmograph to study the diagnostical possibilities of a method of echography in orbital tumors. The findings of para- and transbulbal methodics were checked in 140 patients. The tonometry of tumors and soft orbital tissues was performed. The methodics of acoustic orbitonometry based on the measurement of retrobulbal neoplasms at the moment of their step-by-step compression was worked out. The echographic symptoms of different orbital neoplasms is described as well as those of pseudotumor and tireotropic exophthalmos. The poss

Orbital neoplasms and their treatment may have significant negative impact on patient's survival, function, and appearance. It is essential to establish early and accurate diagnosis. The anatomic location of the orbit allows neoplastic processes to threaten structures in the intracranial cavity relatively easily. This adds significantly to the complexity of managing orbital tumors. Improved surgical approaches allow better visualization of the neoplasm and greater protection of essential anatomic structures. This also permits immediate functional and aesthetic reconstruction. A multidisciplina

A cross-sectional mass epidemiological survey of 18,320 urban and rural citizens of the Republic of Tadjikistan revealed 31 patients with orbital tumors, of which lacrimal neoplasms were determined in 4 (0.022% in the general population and 12.9% of the identified orbital tumors). According to the referral data, the prevalence of lacrimal neoplasms was 1.03% of all the tumors of the organ of vision and 5.26% of the orbital neoplasms. Epithelial tumors were more common (52%), their malignant forms dominated over benign ones (55.7% versus 44.3%). Inflammatory processes (22.6%) as acute and chron

Orbital teratomas are unilateral, congenital germ cell tumors, which present at birth with moderate to massive proptosis, leading to exposure keratopathy. They enlarge the orbit diffusely. Primary orbital teratomas cause axial or vertical proptosis, are usually unassociated with bony defects, and do not extend outside the orbit. Recurrence is unusual after an early excision without enucleation or exenteration. Combined orbital teratomas additionally involve periorbital and intracranial spaces, cause lesser degrees of proptosis, and typically are associated with defects of orbital bones. Their

This is a retrospective case description of a single female patient found to have a primary solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the orbital apex and temporal/parietal dura. These monoclonal plasma cell neoplasms account for fewer than 5% of plasma cell neoplasms. Although most commonly found in the head and neck, orbital and dural solitary extramedullary plasmacytomas are extremely uncommon. The authors present a case of an extramedullary plasmacytoma involving both of these structures in a middle-age otherwise healthy female to highlight this rare entity and elucidate current treatment mo

Ultrasonography (US) is a rapid, accurate, noninvasive method of evaluating ocular and orbital disease. A wide spectrum of pediatric ocular and orbital disorders can be demonstrated with US: ocular congenital malformations, vitreoretinal disorders, primary and metastatic ocular and orbital neoplasms, inflammatory and congestive disease (focal or systemic), cystic disease, trauma, and foreign bodies. US may be the method of choice for studying ocular congenital anomalies and vitreoretinal disorders owing to its high definition and noninvasiveness. In ocular neoplasms, US demonstrates the morpho

Neuroendocrine neoplasms are tumours that usually arise in the gastrointestinal tract and the bronchopulmonary system. The orbit is a rare anatomical site for their metastases. In the following article we present a case report of a 73-year-old man who was admitted to the Ophthalmology Department because of eye pain and high intraocular pressure in the right eye. There was also eye motility restriction, diplopia, oedema of the eyelid, and subconjunctival haemorrhage. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumour in the right orbit, probably arising from the inferior rectus muscle. The patient wa

Background The orbit is an anatomically complex structure comprising the globe, extraocular muscles, fat, vascular, nervous, glandular, and connective tissues. A wide variety of neoplasms can arise from different orbital structures, which can create a diagnostic challenge to the pathologists. No formal study has been conducted in this regard in North East India. Aim and Objectives This article aims to document the pattern and prevalence of orbital tumors in our institute and assess the utility of histopathological examination (HPE) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) in the precise diagnosis of t

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare spindle cell neoplasm typically arising in the pleura and involving the orbit as its most common extra-pleural location. We herein describe a well documented case of orbital SFT arising in a 62-year-old woman presenting with progressive swelling of the right upper eyelid and proptosis. The tumor had a benign clinical course, with radical surgical excision followed by regression of the clinical symptoms. We review the clinical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical features of the orbital SFT described so far, with particular emphasis on differential

Neoplasms of the orbit may be primary, secondary (infiltration from the adjacent structures), or metastatic (from distant structures). It can be divided into 3 histologic categories: benign, benign but locally aggressive, and malignant. Primary and secondary orbital tumors, including intra-orbital and optic nerve tumors are uncommon observations in daily medical practice. Orbital tumors represent approximately 0.1% of all tumors and approximately 18% of all orbital diseases. We report a case of a 42 year old male patient with colorectal malignancy with basal skull metastasis involving the orbi

Hidradenocarcinoma is a rare form of malignant adnexal tumor. This malignant tumor has been reported to metastasize to regional lymph nodes, and distant metastasis into structures like the orbit and extraocular muscle is uncommon. Orbital metastasis comprises about 10% of all orbital neoplasms. Common systemic malignancies contributing to orbital metastasis are breast cancer, prostate cancer, and skin malignancy, melanoma. We report the case of a middle-aged man with left axillary hidradenocarcinoma with an orbital metastatic lesion infiltrating the inferior rectus muscle with optic nerve invo
