Reactivity of Elemental Tin and Zinc toward Organophosphonic Acid Dialkyl Esters: A New One-Pot Recipe for the Synthesis of Coordination Assemblies Derived from O-Alkylorganophosphonate Ligands.

A new recipe for the synthesis of diorganotin bis(O-alkylorganophosphonate)s, R12Sn{O(P)(O)(OR1)R}2 [R = R1 = methyl (1); R1 = ethyl and R = methyl (2), allyl (3), 2-thienyl (4), benzyl (5)], has been developed from the direct reaction of elemental tin (powder) with organophosphonic acid dialkyl esters, RP(O)(OR1)2, in the presence of a catalytic amount of potassium iodide under ambient conditions (130 °C, 18-20 h). The key steps in the proposed catalytic cycle involve the monodealkylation of phosphonate diester and in situ generation of a R1SnI or R12SnI2 intermediate via the oxidative additi

The Synthesis and Evaluation of Diethyl Benzylphosphonates as Potential Antimicrobial Agents.

The impact of substituent at phenyl ring of diethyl benzylphosphonate derivatives on cytotoxic activity was studied. The organophosphonates were obtained based on developed palladium-catalyzed α, β-homodiarylation of vinyl esters protocol. The new synthetic pathway toward 1,2-bis(4-((diethoxyphosphoryl)methyl)phenyl)ethyl acetate was proposed which significantly improves the overall yield of the final product (from 1% to 38%). Several newly synthesized organophosphonates were tested as new potential antimicrobial drugs on model Escherichia coli bacterial strains (K12 and R2-R3). All tested com

Phosphorus sorption on marine carbonate sediment: phosphonate as model organic compounds.

Organophosphonate, characterized by the presence of a stable, covalent, carbon to phosphorus (C-P) bond, is a group of synthetic or biogenic organophosphorus compounds. The fate of these organic phosphorus compounds in the environment is not well studied. This study presents the first investigation on the sorption of phosphorus (P) in the presence of two model phosphonate compounds, 2-aminothylphosphonoic acid (2-AEP) and phosphonoformic acid (PFA), on marine carbonate sediments. In contrast to other organic P compounds, no significant inorganic phosphate exchange was observed in seawater. P w

A role for carbon catabolite repression in the metabolism of phosphonoacetate by Agromyces fucosus Vs2.

A strain of Agromyces fucosus, designated Vs2, metabolized a range of organophosphonate compounds as sole phosphorus sources for growth and metabolized phosphonoacetate as a sole carbon, energy and phosphorus source for growth. With phosphonoacetate as the sole phosphorus source and a pyruvate carbon source, transient phosphate release to the medium was observed, in contrast to cultures grown with glucose and phosphonoacetate, where no phosphate release to the medium was observed. Carbon catabolite repression, specifically by means of inducer exclusion of phosphonoacetate, was proposed as the

Surface Dissociation Effect on Phosphonic Acid Self-Assembled Monolayer Formation on ZnO Nanowires.

Understanding the formation process of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of organophosphonic acids on ZnO surfaces is essential to designing their various applications, including solar cells, heterogeneous catalysts, and molecular sensors. Here, we report the significant effect of surface dissociation on SAM formation of organophosphonic acids on single-crystalline ZnO nanowire surfaces using infrared spectroscopy. When employing the most conventional solvent-methanol (relative permittivity εr = 32.6), the production of undesired byproducts (layered zinc compounds) on the surface was identified

Characterization of a phosphodiesterase capable of hydrolyzing EA 2192, the most toxic degradation product of the nerve agent VX.

Glycerophosphodiesterase (GpdQ) from Enterobacter aerogenes is a nonspecific diesterase that enables Escherichia coli to utilize alkyl phosphodiesters, such as diethyl phosphate, as the sole phosphorus source. The catalytic properties of GpdQ were determined, and the best substrate found was bis(p-nitrophenyl) phosphate with a kcat/Km value of 6.7 x 10(3) M-1 s-1. In addition, the E. aerogenes diesterase was tested as a catalyst for the hydrolysis of a series of phosphonate monoesters which are the hydrolysis products of the highly toxic organophosphonate nerve agents sarin, soman, GF, VX, and

Distribution of glyphosate and methylphosphonate catabolism systems in soil bacteria Ochrobactrum anthropi and Achromobacter sp.

Bacterial strains capable of utilizing methylphosphonic acid (MP) or glyphosate (GP) as the sole sources of phosphorus were isolated from soils contaminated with these organophosphonates. The strains isolated from MP-contaminated soils grew on MP and failed to grow on GP. One group of the isolates from GP-contaminated soils grew only on MP, while the other one grew on MP and GP. Strains Achromobacter sp. MPS 12 (VKM B-2694), MP degraders group, and Ochrobactrum anthropi GPK 3 (VKM B-2554D), GP degraders group, demonstrated the best degradative capabilities towards MP and GP, respectively, and

Phosphate-independent utilization of phosphonoacetic acid as sole phosphorus source by a psychrophilic strain of Geomyces pannorum P15.

A psychrophilic fungal strain of Geomyces pannorum P15 was screened for its ability to utilize a range of synthetic and natural organophosphonate compounds as the sole source of phosphorus, nitrogen, or carbon. Only phosphonoacetic acid served as a phosphorus source for microbial growth in phosphate-independent manner. Substrate metabolism did not lead to extracellular release of inorganic phosphate. No phosphonate metabolizing enzyme activity was detectable in cell-free extracts prepared from Geomyces biomass pregrown on 2 mmol/L phosphonoacetic acid.

Oxidative conversion of HEDP to phosphate in charged water microdroplets.

Organophosphonates are persistent anthropogenic phosphorus compounds because of their stable carbon-phosphorus bonds. Whether such compounds can be oxidatively converted to inorganic phosphate at dynamic air-water interfaces remains poorly understood. Here, using 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) as a model organophosphonate, we show its stepwise oxidation in charged water microdroplets under mild conditions. Online mass spectrometry revealed a marked decrease in the deprotonated HEDP signal and the appearance of H2PO4- at m/z 96.9685, while ion chromatography and CO2 analysis i

Methane and carbon dioxide emissions from wastewater treatment units linked to DOM stabilization and phosphonate-scavenging microbiomes.

Municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are major engineered facilities for urban carbon removal, yet methane (CH4) formation and source mechanisms in downstream stages after aeration and biological nutrient removal remain poorly resolved. Process resolved monitoring at a full-scale WWTP showed that CH4 emissions were concentrated upstream, while measurable fluxes persisted in downstream sedimentation and denitrification units. Dissolved CH4 profiles showed strong attenuation of influent derived CH4 during upstream treatment, followed by a local increase after secondary clarification. Ca

Detection of phosphonoacetate degradation and phnA genes in soil bacteria from distinct geographical origins suggest its possible biogenic origin.

Phosphonoacetate is regarded as an antiviral xenobiotic whose mineralization can be catalysed by an enzyme, phosphonoacetate hydrolase, encoded by the phnA gene. To date the enzyme's activity has been detected in only a limited number of bacteria. Its expression has been shown to occur in a manner independent of the phosphate status of the cell, in direct contrast to the general rule of organophosphonate metabolism being under the control of the pho regulon. In this study the environmental occurrence of the phnA gene was evaluated by polymerase chain reaction amplification of DNA extracts obta

The overproduction of 2,4-DTBP accompanying to the lack of available form of phosphorus during the biodegradative utilization of aminophosphonates by Aspergillus terreus.

Although information about the ability of some filamentous fungi to biodegrade organophosphonates is available, the knowledge about accompanying changes in fungal metabolism is very limited. The aim of our study was to determine the utilization of the chosen, structurally diverse aminophosphonates by Aspergillus terreus (Thom), in the context of the behaviour of this fungus while growing in unfavourable conditions, namely the lack of easily available phosphates. We found that all the studied compounds were utilized by fungus as nutritive sources of phosphorus, however, their effect on the prod

Redox-Triggered Orientational Responses of Liquid Crystals to Chlorine Gas.

Surface-supported liquid crystals (LCs) that exhibit orientational and thus optical responses upon exposure to ppb concentrations of Cl2 gas are reported. Computations identified Mn cations as candidate surface binding sites that undergo redox-triggered changes in the strength of binding to nitrogen-based LCs upon exposure to Cl2 gas. Guided by these predictions, μm-thick films of nitrile- or pyridine-containing LCs were prepared on surfaces decorated with Mn2+ binding sites as perchlorate salts. Following exposure to Cl2 , formation of Mn4+ (in the form of MnO2 microparticles) was confirmed a

Assembly of a Hexameric Cluster of Polyoxomolybdotriphosphonate Builts from [Zn(H2O){TeMo6O21}{N(CH2PO3)3}]6- Subunits and Its Optical and Catalytic Properties.

The crown-shaped organotriphosphonate-modified 36-molybdenum cluster (NH4)18Na7H11[Zn(H2O)TeMo6O21{N(CH2PO3)3}]6·23H2O (1) has been synthesized, which is the largest zinc-containing organophosphonate-based polyoxometalate to date. Compound 1 was prepared in buffer solution (pH 5.5) with heptamolybdate and amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) as the organic ligand. The polyanion constructed from a hexmeric assembly of [Zn(H2O){TeMo6O21}{N(CH2PO3)3}]6- subunits has been fully investigated by a few characterization methods. In this work, we discovered that 1 exhibited reversible photochromis

Primer design to assess bacterial degradation of glyphosate and other phosphonates.

Phosphonates are organic phosphorous (P) compounds frequently detected in the environment due to a very stable CP bond that render them relatively recalcitrant. Glyphosate [N-phosphonomethyl glycine] is the most widely used and best-known synthetic phosphonate, and one of the most concerning herbicides in the world today. Microbial degradation of glyphosate and organophosphonates in general, is the main dissipation mechanism operating in most environments. One microbial metabolic pathway in this process is the CP lyase pathway, entailing an enzymatic complex encoded by about 14 genes (the Phn

Methylphosphonic Acid Biosynthesis and Catabolism in Pelagic Archaea and Bacteria.

Inorganic phosphate is essential for all life forms, yet microbes in marine environments are in near constant deprivation of this important nutrient. Organophosphonic acids can serve as an alternative source of inorganic phosphate if microbes possess the appropriate biochemical pathways that allow cleavage of the stable carbon-phosphorus bond that defines this class of molecule. One prominent source of inorganic phosphate is methylphosphonic acid, which is found as a constituent of marine-dissolved organic matter. The cycle of biosynthesis and catabolism of methylphosphonic acid by marine micr

Glyphosate acetylation as a specific trait of Achromobacter sp. Kg 16 physiology.

The growth parameters of Achromobacter sp. With glyphosate as a sole phosphorus source, they were still 40-50 % lower than in media supplemented with orthophosphate or other organophosphonate-methylphosphonic acid. At the first time process of glyphosate acetylation and accumulation of acetylglyphosate in culture medium were revealed in this strain. Acetylglyphosate isolated from cultural liquid was iden

Carbon-Phosphorus Lyase-the State of the Art.

Organophosphonates are molecules that contain a very chemically stable carbon-phosphorus (C-P) bond. Microorganisms can utilize phosphonates as potential source of crucial elements for their growth, as developed several pathways to metabolize these compounds. One among these pathways is catalyzed by C-P lyase complex, which has a broad substrate specifity; therefore, it has a wide application in degradation of herbicides deposited in the environment, such as glyphosate. This multi-enzyme system accurately recognized in Escherichia coli and genetic studies have demonstrated that it is encoded b
