Historic and early life origins of hypertension in Africans.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) causes 12.4 million deaths annually, most (9.6 million) occurring in developing countries. Hypertension, the most common CVD, arises within the context of obesity, but the underlying mechanisms remain obscure. Obesity and salt intake are two important risk factors for hypertension and are the focus of this paper. Traditional African populations show a low prevalence of hypertension, but hypertension is more common in migrant African populations in the West than in other ethnic groups. One explanation is genetic, but no causative gene has been confidently identified

The Origin of the Feedstock Molecules for Life on the Hadean Earth.

The origin of life in the Hadean eon required the formation of amino acids and nucleosides among the key molecules of life. It is assumed that highly unsaturated carbon and nitrogen containing feedstock molecules, which form in a strongly reducing H2-atmosphere were the reactive starting materials. The Hadean Earth was, however, surrounded by a CO2-dominated atmosphere and the question of how under such inert conditions the biomolecules could have formed is unsolved. Here, we report that HNO and formaldehyde, which form robustly in a weakly reducing atmosphere by lightning and UV-irradiation,

Early-life origins of life-cycle well-being: research and policy implications.

Mounting evidence across different disciplines suggests that early-life conditions can have consequences on individual outcomes throughout the life cycle. Relative to other developed countries, the United States fares poorly on standard indicators of early-life health, and this disadvantage may have profound consequences not only for population well-being, but also for economic growth and competitiveness in a global economy. In this paper, we first discuss the research on the strength of the link between early-life health and adult outcomes, and then provide an evidence-based review of the eff

Bio-mediated CN cycling in serpentinites and the origin of life.

Hydrogen-rich, high pH conditions associated with serpentinisation are fundamental to some theories of the origin of life on Earth and other planets. In these theories, the first life formed in hydrothermal vents from organic compounds produced by metal-catalysed reduction of carbon dioxide and nitrate by hydrogen. Competing theories suggest that life could not have arisen without hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and that HCN was provided by vaporisation of large impactors. Here, we show that carbon- and nitrogen-bearing species are associated with chalcopyrite and native copper in serpentinised perido

The origin and evolution of life as continuing expansion of viral hosts.

The emergence of life on Earth likely involved a complicated evolution of the primeval residues via basic intermediate forms capable of self-replication. These primordial replicators could have further evolved into archaic virus-like structures, which in turn became the precursors of the cellular life forms. If viruses were indeed the predecessors of the first cellular life forms as suggested by the 'primordial virus world' and 'virus-first' scenarios, could their hosts themselves emerged and evolved predominantly as factories and reservoirs for virus production and dissemination? In other wor

Spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage of structural origin during the first year of life.

Symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) in term infants is not common, but when it occurs it is usually secondary to trauma, coagulation disorders and/or hypoxia. The possibility of a structural cause for an infantile ICH is unfortunately not seriously considered until very late. In this paper we report the cases of five full-term infants, each of whom developed ICH secondary to a structural lesion during the 1st year of life. Three presented during the newborn period. A congenital saccular aneurysm of the middle cerebral artery in an 8-month old male infant; a posterior fossa arteriovenous

Reassessing viral origins and evolutionary placement in the tree of life.

The quest to fit all cellular beings in one picture frame as the universal Tree of Life (ToL) has always been a daunting task for evolutionary biologists. Over the decades, ToL has emerged from a dichotomous topology to its present form with three domains; bacteria, archaea and eukarya. But this phylogenetic placement is also questionable due to the miscellaneous nature of certain housekeeping genes, horizontal gene transfers (HGT), and also due to incomplete pathways of pathogenic organisms. Furthermore, the ambiguous nature of viruses has always puzzled researchers about their placement in T

The Role of Pyrophosphate in the Origin of Life: An Energy-Based Hypothesis.

Life could not emerge through molecular synthesis alone; it also required mechanisms that coupled environmental energy to directional chemical change. Yet, ATP, the dominant energy carrier in modern cells, depends on nucleotide synthesis, selective catalysis, and membrane-based regeneration, making it an unlikely starting point for bioenergetics. Here, I examine inorganic pyrophosphate as a possible intermediate between geochemical phosphate activation and ATP-centred metabolism. Condensed phosphates can form under plausible volcanic, mineral-mediated, and wet-dry conditions, and pyrophosphate

Quality of Life Postchronic Tonsillitis Treatments: An Original Research.

INTRODUCTION: The tonsillectomy is a common surgical procedure performed for the treatment of chronic tonsillitis (CT). In the present study, we aim to evaluate the quality of life (QOL) after CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study among 100 tonsillectomy patients whose data were collected from the department records. The QOL was evaluated using the "Glasgow Benefit Inventory." We assessed various parameters pre-and post-surgery. We deliberated P < 0.05 as significant when comparing the pre-and post-surgical QOL. RESULTS: We observed that of the 100 subjected selected

Developmental origins of myocardial abnormalities in postnatal life 1.

Poor quality and quantity maternal nutrition during pregnancy exerts permanent and damaging effects on the heart of the developing fetus. The developmental origin of adult heart disease is considered an important and critical factor in the pathogenesis of myocardial abnormalities in later life. Low birth mass, a marker of intrauterine stress, has been linked to a predisposition to heart disease. In this article, our work on the impact of exposure to a low-protein diet, in utero, on the developing heart and its long-term consequences are discussed. Other studies providing some supportive eviden

L-form bacteria, chronic diseases and the origins of life.

The peptidoglycan cell wall is widely conserved across the bacterial domain, suggesting that it appeared early in the evolution of bacteria. It is normally essential but under certain conditions wall-deficient or 'L-form' bacteria can be isolated. In Bacillus subtilis this normally requires two genetic changes. The first, exemplified by mutations shutting down wall precursor synthesis, works by increasing membrane synthesis. This promotes the unusual form of proliferation used by L-forms, involving a range of relatively disorganized membrane blebbing or vesiculation events. The secondary class

Models of progressive neurological dysfunction originating early in life.

It is now well established that many of society's most devastating and costly neurological diseases and disorders arise from trauma at, or shortly after birth. In some cases deficits are seen in childhood and in others they are substantially delayed; arising in adolescence or young adulthood. In either case the initial insult initiates a metabolic and/or neurodegenerative cascade that proceeds, often undetected, for a considerable period of time before diagnosable symptoms appear. This affords a potential for detecting and slowing or arresting degenerative and/or malfunctioning processes prior

Gravity as a Physical Selector of Chemical Evolution and the Origin of Life.

The origin of life signifies one of science's most profound mysteries, demanding integrative comprehension from chemistry, biology, and physics. In this review we examine the coupled roles of chemical evolution, biological evolution, gravity and light in shaping the earliest stages of life. We discuss how conditions established by the Big Bang, stellar nucleosynthesis and early planetary environments provided the energetic conditions necessary for the emergence of prebiotic chemistry. Going beyond the geocentric perspective, we explore extraterrestrial chemistry and analyze how gravitational f

When science mirrors life: on the origins of the Price equation.

The Price equation was a piece of abstract mathematics. What kind of a connection could it possibly have had to George Price's personal life and biography? Here, I will argue that the initial impetus for Price's foray into mathematical population genetics stemmed from a preoccupation with the origins of family, one that was born following a divorce from his wife and the abandonment of their two young girls. What is special about the Price equation is the way in which it associates statistically between two groups, a 'mother' and 'daughter' population. The association need not mean genetic rela

Duodenocaval fistula: a life-threatening condition of various origins.

We report on two cases of duodenocaval fistula. The first patient, a 73-year-old man, had sepsis and occult digestive bleeding. We diagnosed a fistula that resulted from a right nephrectomy and subsequent radiotherapy for a urothelial tumor 20 months earlier. The second patient, a 60-year-old woman, complained of right abdominal pain. A duodenocaval fistula that was caused by duodenal perforation by a migrating caval filter placed 10 years earlier was revealed by means of endoscopy. Both patients had a successful operation to treat the condition. An extensive review of the literature disclosed

Ruptured cerebral aneurysm in the early stage of life--a congenital origin?

We report the case of a large fusiform aneurysm of the anterior cerebral artery in a 3-month-old girl presenting with generalized seizures and complicated by a cardiorespiratory arrest needing resuscitation. The native cerebral CT scan revealed a diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage (Fischer III grade); CT angiography showed an aneurysm of the distal A1 segment of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA). Successful treatment was achieved through surgical trapping of the aneurysm and sacrifice of the distal A1 segment. A histological study of the aneurysmal wall revealed the absence of elastic fibers in

Quality of life among former Soviet Union and Israeli origin methadone users.

A common treatment intervention for heroin addiction is methadone maintenance. In recent years a wider perspective has been adapted to understand and evaluate addiction through quality of life. This article examines quality of life conditions of 170 male former Soviet Union and Israeli origin drug users in methadone maintenance and provides an understanding of conditions linked to the World Health Organization Quality of Life project's best available techniques reference document. Having a partner or spouse and less chronic illness are positive factors affecting quality of life regardless of c

Membrane information organization at the origin of life: From interfaces to informational bodies.

Membranes are usually treated as passive containers in origin-of-life models, confining prebiotic chemistry, buffering diffusion, and sustaining gradients. Here, we argue that early membranes provided the physical substrate for candidate informational bodies: boundaries whose physical properties can stabilize, store, and select patterns of interaction with the environment. Within the Membrane Information Organization (MIO) framework, we place protocells in a low-dimensional organizational space defined by a triplet of body parameters: boundary strength, memory, and identity persistence. These

Intercalation-mediated synthesis and replication: a new approach to the origin of life.

We propose that a molecular midwife, a flat molecule approximately 10 Ax10 A with two hydrophobic faces, was essential to the origin of life. This molecule was positively charged, water soluble and did not strongly associate with itself in solution. It may have been a derivative of phthalocyanine that no longer exists on the Earth today, and might have been formed solely from hydrogen cyanide and formaldehyde. The midwife tended to intercalate between side groups (bases, similar to those in RNA) of polymers to form stacks, which incorporated bare bases. The midwife alternated in these stacks w

The smallpox ghost in Voltaire's life: inoculation and the origins of vaccine acceptance.

Smallpox shaped eighteenth-century debates on risk, trust, and prevention. Voltaire, marked by the disease throughout his life-the "smallpox ghost"-emerged as a prominent advocate of smallpox inoculation (variolation), a preventive practice that preceded Jennerian vaccination by several decades. Through his writings, he framed the practice as a conflict between empirical reasoning and social resistance. This Perspective examines his role in the early acceptance of preventive medicine and highlights its relevance for understanding contemporary challenges in vaccine acceptance.
