Longitudinal monitoring for respiratory pathogens in broiler chickens reveals co-infection of Chlamydia psittaci and Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale.

Chlamydia psittaci is prevalent in broiler chicken production. However, the role of C. psittaci in the respiratory disease complex needs to be clarified. Our aim was to identify the time point when a C. psittaci infection appeared on a broiler farm and to examine the presence of other respiratory pathogens at that time. We focused on the 'major' respiratory pathogens occurring in Belgian broilers, namely infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), avian metapneumovirus (aMPV), Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale, Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Mycoplasma synoviae, and examined their co-occurrence with C. psi

Development, characterization, and preliminary evaluation of a temperature-sensitive mutant of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale for potential use as a live vaccine in turkeys.

A temperature-sensitive (Ts) mutant strain of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) was developed after exposure of the wild-type organism to N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine. The Ts mutant strain grew at 31 C but had its growth inhibited at 41 C unlike wild-type parent strain. The Ts mutant and parent strains were characterized. Morphologic and biochemical properties of wild-type and mutant strains did not show any differences. The strains were also characterized by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based fingerprinting methods. Results showed similar patterns in repetitive sequences by rep

Comparative genomics of Ornithobacterium spp. isolated from free range layer chickens with respiratory infections unveils marked genetic diversity and putative new species.

The bacterium Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale causes upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) in commercial poultry worldwide. Efficient diagnostic and control of this emerging pathogen require accurate understanding of its classification, prevalence and distribution. The present study explores the genetic diversity of sixty-seven organisms presumptively identified as Ornithobacterium and recovered from chickens with URTIs in Australian free-range layer farms. Rep-PCR fingerprinting revealed wide diversity of isolates between and within farms and sites of infection. Forty representative isola

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale in Moroccan Poultry: Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profiles, Characterization of Recent Isolates, and Retrospective Study (2019-23) of Its Occurrence in Different Poultry Production Systems.

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) is one of the most important respiratory pathogens of poultry, notably in turkeys, while Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) is the etiologic agent of infectious serositis, the most economically significant disease of domestic ducks and, to a lesser extent, geese and turkeys. Currently, little is known about ORT and RA infections in Moroccan poultry. Thus, the main aim of this study was to describe ORT incidence in Moroccan poultry flocks during the period from 2019 to 2023 and gain better insights into genetic characteristics in combination with assessment of a

Immunity to bacterial infection in the chicken.

Bacterial infections remain important to the poultry industry both in terms of animal and public health, the latter due to the importance of poultry as a source of foodborne bacterial zoonoses such as Salmonella and Campylobacter. As such, much focus of research to the immune response to bacterial infection has been to Salmonella. In this review we will focus on how research on avian salmonellosis has developed our understanding of immunity to bacteria in the chicken from understanding the role of TLRs in recognition of bacterial pathogens, through the role of heterophils, macrophages and γδ l

Recurring Airsacculitis in Late-Stage Production Leading to High Slaughterhouse Condemnation in a Commercial Turkey Farm.

Between May 2021 and June 2024, a series of slaughterhouse condemnations was documented in the male population of a commercial turkey farm in Lower Austria, Austria. The primary reasons for condemnation were severe airsacculitis, often accompanied by ascites and pleural effusion. Across various production cycles, the flocks either remained asymptomatic with lesions only being detected during carcass inspection at the slaughterhouse or showed a slight increase in mortality accompanied by clinical signs such as dyspnea, open-mouth breathing, and head shaking in some birds during the final weeks
