OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to verify the effects that corrective treatment for skeletal Class II malocclusions with fixed functional orthopaedic appliances has on the relative positions of the articular disc and the mandibular condyle.
METHODS: Orthodontic treatment progress was monitored in 20 patients by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at four defined points in time. Visual inspection of the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) was performed on three slices each (lateral, central, medial) of closed-mouth and maximum-open parasagittal MRI. Metric analysis was performed on the central slices of

BACKGROUND: Thermosensitive microsensors help assess removable appliance wear-time compliance and thereby provide objective feedback to the patient.
METHODS: This single-center, two-parallel-arm randomized controlled trial assessed the impact of wear-time monitoring in removable functional appliances on patients' subjective experience, treatment duration, and outcome. In total, 58 patients aged between 10 and 15 years were treated with either a twin-block appliance or headgear activator. The patients were randomly allocated to two groups, one of which received wear-time monitoring while the o

INTRODUCTION: No study has been conducted to explore soft and hard tissue changes brought by functional appliances within the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) after correction of class II division 2 (div 2) malocclusion. Hence, we planned this study to evaluate the mandibular condyle disk-fossa relationship before and after prefunctional and twin block therapy using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan.
METHODOLOGY: This prospective observational study was conducted among 14 males treated with prefunctional appliances for 3-6 months, followed by 6-9 months of fixed mechanotherapy. MRI scan wa

The objectives of functional orthodontic treatment include creating a broad smile, pleasing facial profile, and healthy, functional occlusions and temporomandibular joints. Removable orthodontic appliances have long been used in the treatment of some temporomandibular disorders. Invisalign aligners are removable orthodontic appliances. Certain TMJ case types can be treated successfully with Invisalign.

Eruption guidance appliances are recommended for early orthodontic treatment or prevention of malocclusions. The treatment effect of eruption guidance appliances and functional appliances is similar. In addition to dentoalveolar and skeletal effects, eruption guidance appliances would also have myofunctional effects for treating open mouth behaviour and swallowing problems. However, there is no solid evidence for the myofunctional effect claimed. The position of erution guidance appliances in the orthodontic treatment arsenal is limited: early treatment of Angle Class II malocclusion in 2 phas

The treatment of Class II malocclusion due to mandibular retrognathia is one of the most common challenges met in orthodontic practice. When it comes to a growing patient, functional appliances are the optimal way to achieve growth modification by enhancing mandibular growth. Clear aligners have been part of the orthodontic treatment for several decades but until recently they were only used to correct mild malocclusions. In 2017, Align Technology introduced the Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement Feature (IMAF) which replicates the action of functional appliances. As this device is new to

Early orthodontic treatment is an important means of preventing and treating dentofacial deformities during the period of growth and development. In this stage, children have great potential in growth and development, high adaptability of muscles and temporomandibular joint, and good responsiveness to orthodontic force. Therefore, orthodontic intervention and treatment in this stage can prevent and guide the normal growth and development of dentition, occlusion and maxillofacial complex. This article summarizes the commonly used orthodontic techniques and appliances in the mixed dentition, inc

Currently, wide arrays of fixed functional appliances are available for the correction of Class II malocclusion. The orthodontist must choose from these appliances depending on the mechanics, efficiency, and cost of the appliance. Fixed functional appliances may reduce the individual visits and hence the cost as compared to the removable appliances. Additionally, it may save the clinician's chair time. This report discussed the in-house laboratory fabrication and clinical procedure of customized fixed functional appliances by utilizing the readily available dental materials in the orthodontic

Removable appliances are an important part of orthodontic treatment. The Twin-block is widely used for Class II correction. Traditionally, an impression, bite registration, and mounted plaster casts are required to fabricate the acrylic appliance, which usually requires a specialized laboratory. This makes the process expensive and also time-consuming. This paper aims to present an innovative approach for the virtual design and direct printing of removable orthodontic appliances, particularly the Twin-block, that can be done in-office without the need for casts or a specialized laboratory.

Background Modern clinical orthodontics' functional appliances, a well-established modality of treatment, exhibit an amazing diversity of design. Clinical findings show that people have difficulty adjusting to these devices due to their size and unfixed positioning inside the mouth and that patient adaptation may vary based on the type of orthodontic functional appliance employed. Despite the fact that they appear to inflict more pain and soreness than, for example, removable plates, the effects of various orthodontic functional appliances on patients' acclimation have not yet been researched.

OBJECTIVE: Respiration is a vital functional process that has effects on normal craniofacial development. Since the upper airway formations and dentofacial structures are adjacent to each other, the interaction between them is possible. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of removable functional appliances used in the treatment of patients with mandibular and maxillary growth retardation-stenosis in Class I, Class II, and Class III malocclusion on the upper airway.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty two patients were studied in the study. The patients were divided into 4 groups accord

A girl, aged 11 years 4 months, with a skeletal Class II pattern and a severe overjet (10 mm) was treated with a Twin-block appliance. After 9 months of appliance therapy, the skeletal Class II was overcorrected. After 26 months of retention, when the occlusion was stable and the growth rate was diminishing, fixed orthodontic appliances using temporary skeletal anchorage devices were initiated. The total active treatment time with fixed orthodontic appliances was 30 months. Posttreatment records after 18 months demonstrated excellent stability: a functional occlusion and a pleasing facial bala
