Repurposing orthodontic brackets for intermaxillary fixation in the management of paediatric mandibular fractures.

Though the incidence of maxillofacial injuries in children is lower compared to their adult counterparts, nasal bone and mandibular fractures are among the most commonly encountered. Management and treatment of mandibular fractures, in particular condylar, in this population is challenging due to anatomical and functional considerations, and conservative management remains the treatment of choice. This case report highlights an innovative technique of conservative management using orthodontic brackets and a myofunctional appliance in a patient who sustained a condylar fracture after falling fr

Corrosion resistance of three orthodontic brackets: a comparative study of three fluoride mouthwashes.

In the present study, three types of orthodontic brackets were investigated: cobalt-chromium (CoCr), iron-chromium-nickel (FeCrNi) and titanium (Ti) based. Their corrosion resistance was compared with that of platinum (Pt), which was chosen as the reference material because of its excellent electrochemical properties. The test solutions were Elmex, Meridol and Acorea fluoride mouthwashes. Fusayama Meyer artificial saliva was used as the reference solution. The corrosion resistance of the different brackets in the three mouthwashes was assessed electrochemically to determine the corrosion poten

Beyond the Brackets: A Case Report of Acute Angioedema Associated With Orthodontic Treatment.

This case report highlights a rare incidence of acute angioedema triggered by an etchant during orthodontic treatment. It underscores the potential for commonly used dental materials to provoke allergic reactions. A 14-year-old female patient developed lip swelling, burning sensation, and localized pain shortly after etching. The reaction involved predominantly the upper lip, and the patient had no known history of allergy. Clinical signs included diffuse, non-pitting edematous swelling of the lips without systemic involvement. Acute allergic angioedema was diagnosed based on clinical evaluati

Prevention of bacterial biofilm formation on orthodontic brackets by non-crosslinked chitosan coating.

During orthodontic treatment, the patients are susceptible to dental caries as a result of the bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation around the orthodontic brackets. Prevention of the caries-related biofilm formation is of significance for maintaining both aesthetics and health of the teeth. Herein, the brackets were functionalized with antibacterial activity via coating a layer of non-crosslinked chitosan (CS). We firstly demonstrated the ability of free CS scaffolds (not coated on brackets) to inhibit the formation of Streptococcus mutans biofilms (inhibition rate 94.3 % for CS-0.3 mg) an

Forced eruption without orthodontic brackets using fiber reinforced composite prostheses: a case report.

Maintenance of periodontal health is one of the most important factors governing success of the restoration and longevity of teeth. For proper maintenance of periodontal health, the biologic width functions as a protective barrier against the entrance of microorganisms in to the internal medium of the periodontal ligament and osseous connective tissue. This clinical case describes a technique to reestablish the biologic width surrounding a fractured central incisor by forced eruption without orthodontic brackets, using fibre reinforced composite prostheses. Main advantages of using fibre reinf

Prospective clinical study of transverse development with orthodontics with self-ligating brackets.

Orthodontics with low friction, low force, passive self-ligating brackets produces alveolar-dental remodeling, resulting in an increase in the transverse diameter of the dental arches, especially in the premolar sector. The aim of this study was to compare the modifications of the transverse diameter in the pre- and post-dental alignment cast models with orthodontics with passive self-ligating brackets in patients with moderate to severe dental discrepancy. The study included 28 patients of both sexes aged 16 to 48 years with dental discrepancies between -6 and -16 mm, treated with self-ligati

In vitro evaluation of microbial contamination and the disinfecting efficacy of chlorhexidine on orthodontic brackets.

BACKGROUND: Contamination of orthodontic appliances is due to the unhygienic practices followed during manufacturing and packaging processes, which may lead to cross-contamination. Although literature has indicated the need for sterilization or disinfection of orthodontic appliances before using in the oral cavity, this is still not employed in routine clinical practice. In this view, the current study evaluates the bacterial load on orthodontic brackets along with the disinfecting efficacy of chlorhexidine. METHODS: A total of 140 brackets were obtained from four different manufacturers and

Analysing the potential of hydrophilic adhesive systems to optimise orthodontic bracket rebonding.

INTRODUCTION: Bond failure during fixed orthodontic treatment is a frequently occurring problem. As bracket rebonding is associated with reduced shear bond strength, the aim of the present investigation is to analyse the effect of different innovative rebonding systems to identify optimised rebonding protocols for orthodontic patient care. METHODS: Metallic brackets were bonded to the frontal enamel surfaces of 240 bovine lower incisors embedded in resin bases. Teeth were randomly divided into two major experimental groups: in group 1 a hydrophilic primer (Assure™ PLUS) was compared to common

Brackets, epitopes and flash memory cards: a futuristic view of clinical orthodontics.

Orthodontics continues to be a profession anchored in traditional technology using appliances that cause inflammatory periodontal ligament (PDL) responses. Existing concepts of biological tooth movement based largely on histological tissue observations and the application of physical principles require major reassessment. In the next millennium, the genome revolution and knowledge of protein production and control could lead to the genetic correction of dentofacial anomalies and pain-free, biomolecular methods of malocclusion correction and long-term stability. A fundamental change is likely t

Effect of acetic NaF solution on the corrosion behavior of stainless steel orthodontic brackets.

This study assessed the effect of acetic NaF solutions on stainless steel orthodontic brackets. Acetic acid was added to a 0.1% NaF solution to make two solutions, one with pH 3.5 and the other with pH 6. For the two different stainless steel brackets (Tomy, Dentaurum) used in this study, they had a similar elemental composition--except with Mo (molybdenum) in the Tomy bracket. The brackets were then immersed in the prepared test solutions for three days and their responses evaluated. In terms of hydrofluoric acid (HF) concentration, the 0.1%/pH 3.5 solution showed a high HF concentration at 2
