Orthodontic extrusion (OE), which is performed in many different clinical situations to move a tooth or its periodontal tissues coronally, is often associated with supracrestal fiberotomy and root planing (OEFRP) or followed by surgical crown lengthening. The OEFRP procedure must be carried out every 2 weeks during the entire extrusive orthodontic phase, and precise control of the technique itself can be quite difficult, especially when this approach is to be performed on a limited portion of the root perimeter in teeth affected by angular defects. The aim of this study was to show a new nonsu

The aim of this investigation was to compare root resorption in the same individual after application of continuous intrusive and extrusive forces. In nine patients (mean age 15.3 years), the maxillary first premolars were randomly intruded or extruded with a continuous force of 100 cN for eight weeks. Eleven maxillary first premolars from six randomly selected orthodontic patients served as controls. Root resorption was determined using scanning electron microscopy. Quantitative assessment of the percentage of resorbed area of the total root surface was performed on composite micrographs. The

A subgingival crown-root fracture presents the clinician with a difficult restorative problem, including reaching the fracture line, and is complicated by the need to maintain the periodontal tissues in good health. The treatment options up to now have usually been limited to extrusion of the remaining root with a conventional orthodontic appliance, surgical intraalveolar transplantation of the root or extraction with bridge replacement. In this report, a new method of orthodontic extrusion with attractive magnets is presented. One or two neodymium-iron-boron magnets were attached to the remai

This study concerns the relapse tendency and extent of root resorption in 33 extruded non-vital crown root fractured or cervical root fractured teeth in 32 patients 10-20 years old. They constitute all orthodontically extruded teeth at the Orthodontic or Pedodontic Departments, Eastman Institutet, Stockholm (1982-1987). A simple extrusion mechanism exerted a force of 60-70 p along the root axis of the tooth. An extrusion of 2-3 mm was obtained in most patients; the most extreme effect was 6 mm. In 16 patients the extrusion was achieved within 3 weeks, in 12 it lasted for 4-6 weeks and in 5, 7-

Orthodontic tooth extrusion is used at crown lengthening procedures or in conjunction with periodontal therapy aimed at eliminating or reducing angular bone defects. A technique for orthodontic extrusion combined with resection of the supracrestal attachment fibers (fiberotomy) was recently proposed as an adjunct to certain restorative procedures. The aim of the present investigation was to analyze reactions of the periodontal tissues to orthodontic extrusion when combined with fiberotomy. In 5 beagle dogs, the mesial roots of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th hemisected mandibular premolar were used as ta

In patients with advanced periodontal disease, pathological tooth migration may occur, which may require subsequent orthodontic treatment for both aesthetic and functional purposes. When planning orthodontic treatment mechanics, intrusive or extrusive forces are frequently indicated. Understanding tissue reactions during these movements is essential for clinicians when devising a comprehensive orthodontic-periodontal treatment plan. This knowledge enables clinicians to be fully aware of and account for the potential effects on the surrounding tissues. The majority of our understanding regardin

Orthodontic extrusion or forced eruption has been a treatment modality used to improve future implant sites. A controlled force exerted on a tooth in a coronal direction can enhance both soft-and hard-tissue dimensions of implant recipient sites. However, this seemingly simple and effective treatment may, in fact, result in the loss of bone rather than gain if orthodontic mechanics are used improperly. Such unfavorable outcomes have been discussed in the literature along with various proposed techniques to overcome these poor results. This article is intended to evaluate these techniques and t

AIM: To evaluate retrospectively the clinical outcomes of intentional replantation (IR) of teeth in terms of tooth survival and periradicular healing and to investigate their prognostic factors.
METHODOLOGY: Two hundred and eighty-seven teeth treated by IR were analysed retrospectively. Clinical outcomes between the cases with preoperative orthodontic extrusion for 2-3 week and those without extrusion were analysed. The outcomes of IR were determined by clinical and radiographic evaluation. Tooth survival and periradicular healing estimates were compared using Kaplan-Meier analysis. The contr

A predictable esthetic restoration is not limited to the restored teeth; it has to include the gingival unit and its interface with the teeth involved. Failure to deliver restorations that maintain gingival health jeopardizes the success of any restorative procedure and creates potential for periodontal problems. Perforations, fractures, root resorption, or caries in the cervical area of the tooth, especially in the anterior part of the mouth, present many challenges to the clinician. Failure to place the crown margins on sound tooth material may violate the biologic width and should be consid

AIM: This case report aimed to present a novel surgical technique involving orthodontics luxation of the offended tooth using miniscrew prior to performing intentional replantation (IR) to remove an extruded separated instrument that injured the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN).
BACKGROUND: Intentional replantation is a dental procedure that involves extracting a tooth, managing the root canal, and then reinserting the tooth back into its socket. This procedure is typically used as a last resort when other treatment options have failed or are not possible. Intentional replantation can be success

AIM: The aim of this study is to compare the adverse effects that occur after orthodontic extrusion of teeth that have been traumatically intruded with those of similar teeth that have not experienced any trauma.
BACKGROUND: The outcome of incisors intrusion can be affected by the patient's age, extent of injury, root development, and malocclusion. Orthodontic extrusion is a potential solution, but it may also cause complications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of the effects of extrusion of traumatically intruded teeth was carried out. The study group included 21 teeth in 14 p

Sensory dysfunction is the most serious complication that occurs after extracting lower third molars in close proximity to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). Even experienced surgeons have difficulties in avoiding nerve damage when the root is anatomically adjacent to the nerve canal. A useful method for reducing nerve damage during extraction is to perform orthodontic extrusion, in which the distance between the nerve and the root increased after applying an orthodontic force on the third molar while extruding the tooth. Here, we report the case of a 37-year-old female who presented with a pa

BACKGROUND: Complicated tooth fractures can be the unfortunate result of orofacial trauma and can offer a therapeutic challenge for the dentist. A conservative solution for gaining supragingival sound tooth structure often includes orthodontic forced eruption. Usually, this procedure is carried out by applying extrusive force after placing a provisional acrylic Richmond crown on the tooth. However, this long-lasting dental treatment may jeopardize the coronal seal of the root canal space, leading to microleakage and endodontic failure.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Orthodontic forced eruption demands app

Background. Orthodontic extrusion (OE), or forced eruption, is a conservative technique used to recover teeth affected by coronal fractures, traumatic intrusions, or severe caries. It involves applying light, continuous forces to induce vertical tooth movement, promoting tissue remodeling through periodontal ligament stimulation. Materials and Methods. This narrative review included studies investigating OE as a therapeutic approach for the management of deep or subgingival carious lesions, traumatic dental injuries (such as intrusion or fracture), or for alveolar ridge augmentation in implant

Maintaining and restoring teeth exhibiting subgingival or even subcrestal defect extensions represent a common problem in daily practice. Such teeth are often deemed "unrestorable" due to a significant hard tissue loss and defect locations violating the biologic width. In order to achieve a sufficient 2-mm-ferrule design and reestablish the biologic width, both surgical crown lengthening and orthodontic extrusion have been suggested. However, surgical crown lengthening has a negative effect on the attachment level of adjacent teeth as well as esthetic disadvantages particularly in the esthetic

When restoring severely compromised teeth, respecting the supracrestal tissue attachment and retaining the most coronal and radicular tooth structure is essential to achieving a sufficient ferrule. Forced orthodontic extrusion is a minimally invasive method that allows hard- and soft-tissue conservation. This article describes the treatment of a severely damaged maxillary central incisor that was managed by using a simplified orthodontic extrusion method with intracoronal elastic and metal ligatures applied through a palatal bar and followed by the biologically oriented preparation technique (

Bisphosphonates and irradiation are useful medical treatments, but can often cause oral complications such as medication-related oral necrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and osteoradionecrosis (ORN) during oral surgery, including tooth extraction. Therefore, we should take all risks into consideration carefully before choosing dental treatment for patients with a medical history of such therapies. A 55-year-old woman who underwent cord blood transplantation to treat extranodal natural killer T (NK/T) cell lymphoma (nasal type IVB) had a medical history of bisphosphonate and irradiation treatments.
