Geographical variation in orthopedic procedures in Norway: Cross-sectional population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Standardized surgery rates for common orthopedic procedures vary across geographical areas in Norway. We explored whether area-level factors related to demand and supply in publicly funded healthcare are associated with geographical variation in surgery rates for six common orthopedic procedures. METHODS: The present study is a cross-sectional population-based study of hospital referral areas in Norway. We included adult admissions for arthroscopy for degenerative knee disease, arthroplasty for osteoarthritis of the knee and hip, surgical treatment for hip fracture, and decompress

[Treatment of acute loss of blood in major elective orthopedic surgery procedures].

Hypovolemia develops when volume of circulating fluid in the body during the surgical procedure and perioperative time is so depleted that effective tissue perfusion can not be maintained and generalized impairment of cellular function is possible. The study was designed to analyze, first, the perioperative acute blood loss in the course of implantation of hip endoprosthesis, and second, the prevention of hemorrhagic shock with regard to morbidity and mortality. In 35 patients, a total hip endoprosthesis was implanted in spinal anesthesia. Prior to surgery and three days following operation, h

Orthopedic visits and procedures preceding rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis: A nationwide case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may initially present with nonspecific musculoskeletal symptoms before formal diagnosis, often prompting orthopedic visits and subsequent orthopedic procedures. We aimed to examine whether such procedures are more frequent among individuals prior to RA diagnosis compared to RA-free matched controls. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-control study using Leumit Healthcare Services electronic database. Each subject diagnosed with RA between 2002 and 2023 was matched with 5 controls based on age, sex, and socioeconomic status (SES). Orthopedic visits

One-year experience with day-of-surgery pregnancy testing before elective orthopedic procedures.

BACKGROUND: Elective surgery is generally postponed in pregnancy. A policy of testing for urine human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in all women of childbearing age on the day of surgery was initiated at an elective orthopedic surgery facility. This is a retrospective report of our 1 yr experience and the associated costs. METHODS: Records were reviewed from January 3, 2005, through January 2, 2006, to determine the number of urine hCG tests performed, and the disposition of all patients with a positive result. Costs were calculated using the charges for testing supplies and laboratory labor.

Heat Sterilization Effects on Polymeric, FDM-Optimized Orthopedic Cutting Guide for Surgical Procedures.

Improvements in software for image analysis have enabled advances in both medical and engineering industries, including the use of medical analysis tools to recreate internal parts of the human body accurately. A research analysis found that FDM-sourced elements have shown viability for a customized and reliable approach in the orthopedics field. Three-dimensional printing has allowed enhanced accuracy of preoperative planning, leading to reduced surgery times, fewer unnecessary tissue perforations, and fewer healing complications. Furthermore, using custom tools chosen for each procedure has

Effect of intravenous fluid warming on core body temperature during elective orthopedic procedures.

The effects of intravenous (IV) fluid warming on core body temperature in a group of dogs undergoing an elective orthopedic procedure was studied. An IV fluid warmer was used alone or in conjunction with forced warmed air to determine the individual or additive effects of IV fluid warming. These effects were compared to those in dogs with no heat support or those with only forced warmed air in a randomized prospective study design. The conclusion was that IV fluid warming had no effect on the maintenance or preservation of core body temperature in this population of dogs, and that, as previous

Acute cauda equina syndrome following orthopedic procedures as a result of epidural anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Cauda equina syndrome (CES) is a rare complication of spinal or epidural anesthesia. It is attributed to direct mechanical injury to the spinal roots of the cauda equina that may result in saddle anesthesia and paraplegia with bowel and bladder dysfunction. CASE DESCRIPTION: The first patient underwent a hip replacement and received 5 mL of 1% lidocaine epidural anesthesia. Postoperatively, when the patient developed an acute CES, the lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan demonstrated clumping/posterior displacement of nerve roots of the cauda equina consistent with adhesiv

The use of the Tsuge procedure for pedal macrodactyly: relevance in pediatric orthopedics.

Pedal macrodactyly is a rare clinical entity that poses a challenge to practicing pediatric orthopedic surgeons. Many treatment options have been proposed. In 1967, Kenya Tsuge proposed a method to decrease the length, width, and circumference of a macrodactylous digit, while maintaining the cosmetic benefit of keeping the nail. We retrospectively reviewed our experience with using this technique in four children (six toes) over a 4-year period. The surgery is described and our results reviewed. We believe that the Tsuge procedure is a technically feasible, effective, single-stage reconstructi

[Mechanical autologous transfusion in orthopedic surgery in children. Is the use of mechanical autologous transfusion possible even in pediatric orthopedic surgical procedures?].

The use of autotransfusion devices is an established method of reducing the need for homologous transfusions in surgery [3, 11, 13], but technical factors still contraindicate the washing and concentration of blood volumes smaller than 300 ml. Therefore, haemoconcentration of small volumes of salvaged blood, as usually found in paediatric surgery, is considered to be a complicated and questionable practice [5]. Whereas these amounts of blood loss are easily tolerated by adults, they may necessitate homologous transfusions in paediatric surgery. In a prospective study, we investigated whether a

Early functional rehabilitation after patellar dislocation-What procedures are daily routine in orthopedic surgery?

INTRODUCTION: Patellar dislocation and rupture of the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) are frequently seen in daily orthopedic practice. Besides initial non-surgical treatment, surgery and subsequent rehabilitation are crucial for restoring stability in the femoropatellar joint. This study investigated current rehabilitation strategies after patellar dislocation because knowledge on this topic has been severely limited so far. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The current rehabilitation protocols of 42 orthopedic and trauma surgical institutions were analyzed regarding their recommendations on weig

Variation in technique and postoperative management of the Latarjet procedure among orthopedic surgeons.

BACKGROUND: The Latarjet procedure has become a treatment of choice for glenohumeral instability in the setting of large glenoid osseous defects (>20%) and for prior failed soft tissue repairs. However, surgical techniques and postoperative rehabilitation protocols vary among expert shoulder surgeons. The purpose of this survey study was to characterize the variation in current practice patterns among fellowship-trained orthopedic shoulder surgeons and identify factors related to variation. METHODS: A 9-question survey was created (SurveyMonkey, San Mateo, CA, USA) and distributed to orthoped
