Orthoptera assemblages in subtropical paddy fields: role, effect of plant phenology, and cultivation area.

Irrigated rice crops are considered artificial wetlands, with high productivity and biodiversity, especially in insect populations such as orthopterans. Although these predominantly herbivorous insects include several species of agricultural concern, their occurrence and dynamics in rice-growing systems remain insufficiently documented. This study aimed to analyse the composition and diversity of Orthoptera insects associated with subtropical paddy fields and to evaluate how rice phenology and field zone (edge vs centre) influence the structure of these assemblages. Sampling was conducted in N

Transcriptomic analysis of the gonads of Locusta migratoria (Orthoptera: Acrididae) following infection with Paranosema locustae.

Paranosema locustae is an environmentally friendly parasitic predator with promising applications in locust control. In this study, transcriptome sequencing was conducted on gonadal tissues of Locusta migratoria males and females infected and uninfected with P. locustae at different developmental stages. A total of 18,635 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in female ovary tissue transcriptomes, with the highest number of DEGs observed at 1 day post-eclosion (7141). In male testis tissue transcriptomes, a total of 32,954 DEGs were identified, with the highest number observed

A new genus and a new species of Trigonidiidae (Orthoptera: Grylloidea) from north Myanmar amber.

We present the description of a new genus and new species of Trigonidiidae, Qiongqi crinalis gen. et sp. nov., found in amber deposits at Noije Bum, near Tanai in the Hukawng Valley of northern Myanmar. Its lateralized eyes, short clypeus, exposed mandible, and extremely dense setae entirely covering the body, provides us with new knowledge on the morphology of Trigonidiidae. Additionally, a key to species of fossil Trigonidiidae in amber was provided.

Ear pinnae in a neotropical katydid (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) function as ultrasound guides for bat detection.

Early predator detection is a key component of the predator-prey arms race and has driven the evolution of multiple animal hearing systems. Katydids (Insecta) have sophisticated ears, each consisting of paired tympana on each foreleg that receive sound both externally, through the air, and internally via a narrowing ear canal running through the leg from an acoustic spiracle on the thorax. These ears are pressure-time difference receivers capable of sensitive and accurate directional hearing across a wide frequency range. Many katydid species have cuticular pinnae which form cavities around th

Characterization and Biological Action of Avermectin Granules on the Moroccan Locust, Dociostaurus maroccanus (Orthoptera: Acrididae).

Granules composed of alfalfa and sunflower meal that were impregnated with avermectins (AVMs) were developed for use against the Moroccan locust, Dociostaurus maroccanus (Thunberg). Laboratory experiments with granules containing 0.15% of AVMs fed to locust nymphs resulted in 100% death within 5 d. The quantification of AVM loss after exposure of AVM-containing preparative forms to UV light for various time periods was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results showed no loss of AVMs from the granules after 3 h of their exposure to UV light. The effect of UV rad

Population cytogenetics of the genus Caledia (Orthoptera: Acridinae). II. Variation in the pattern of C-banding.

The distribution of constitutive heterochromatin has been investigated in four chromosomal races of the grasshopper Caledia captiva (2n=23 male/24 female) by the C-banding technique. Each of the four races was found to have a distinctive banding pattern which is associated with the inter-racial differences in chromosomal rearrangements. The "Ancestral" race has a telocentric chromosome complements with large procentric C-bands which are structurally double on six pairs of chromosomes. The centromeres are unstained. The "General Purpose" race has a C-banding pattern very similar to that seen in

Revision of the wingless pygmy grasshopper Potua Bolívar, 1887 (Orthoptera: Tetrigidae) from Southeast Asia.

Potua Bolívar, 1887, a genus currently assigned to Xerophyllini (Cladonotinae), requires taxonomic revision because its type species, P. coronata Bolívar, 1887, is poorly defined. It exhibits huge variability in the pronotum among type specimens and longstanding confusion with P. morbillosa (Walker, 1871). To resolve the issue, we performed morphometric analyses and sequenced a fragment of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene to reassess species boundaries. Integrating the morphological and genetic data, we synonymise P. coronata Bolívar, 1887, syn. nov. with P. morbillosa (Walker, 1871

Mechanical Vectors Enhance Fungal Entomopathogen Reduction of the Grasshopper Pest Camnula pellucida (Orthoptera: Acrididae).

Mounting scientific evidence indicates that pathogens can regulate insect populations. However, limited dispersal and sensitivity to abiotic conditions often restricts pathogen regulation of host populations. While it is well established that arthropod biological vectors increase pathogen incidence in host populations, few studies have examined whether arthropod mechanical vectors (an organism that transmits pathogens but is not essential to the life cycle of the pathogen) influence host-pathogen dynamics. The importance of mechanical dispersal by ant scavengers, Formica fusca (L.), in a grass

Generic relationships of New World Jerusalem crickets (Orthoptera: Stenopelmatoidea:Stenopelmatinae), including all known species of Stenopelmatus.

The New World Jerusalem crickets currently consist of 4 genera: Stenopelmatus Burmeister, 1838, with 33 named entities; Ammopelmatus Tinkham, 1965, with 2 described species; Viscainopelmatus Tinkham, 1970, with 1 described species, and Stenopelmatopterus Gorochov, 1988, with 3 described species. We redefine the generic boundaries of these 4 genera, synonymize Stenopelmatopterus under Stenopelmatus, and synonymize Viscainopelmatus under Ammopelmatus. We then discuss, and illustrate, all the types of the species of Stenopelmatus, all of which only occur south of the United States' border.

Age- and density-dependent prophylaxis in the migratory, cannibalistic Mormon cricket Anabrus simplex (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae).

As a result of the increased potential for disease transmission, insects are predicted to show an increased constitutive immunity when crowded. Cannibalistic aggressive interactions further increase the risk of wounding and pathogen transmission in crowds. Nymphal Mormon crickets Anabrus simplex Haldeman were collected in Montana and reared in the laboratory either solitarily or at densities similar to that experienced by Mormon crickets in migratory bands. As teneral adults, solitarily-reared Mormon crickets tended to have greater phenoloxidase activity than those reared in groups. Sampling e

An unusual case: repeated nocturnal biting of a bedridden human by a nymph of Tettigonia viridissima (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae).

Cases of adventitious biting on humans by non-hematophagous insects are rarely reported but hold significant medical relevance. This case report documents the first instance of repeated nocturnal biting in a bedridden, tetraparetic 59-year-old patient by a fifth-instar nymph of the great green bush-cricket, Tettigonia viridissima L. (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae). The patient sustained four superficial skin lesions on the left ear and forehead, accompanied by distinct blood smears. A live T. viridissima nymph was captured at the end of a dark red blood streak nearby. Biting activity was likely an

The tracheal system in the stick insect prothorax and prothoracic legs: Homologies to Orthoptera and relations to mechanosensory functions.

Arthropod respiration depends on the tracheal system running from spiracles at the body surface through the body and appendages. Here, three species of stick insects (Carausius morosus, Ramulus artemis, Sipyloidea sipylus) are investigated for the tracheae in the prothorax and foreleg. The origin of the tracheae from the mesothoracic spiracle that enter the foreleg is identified: five tracheae originate from the mesothoracic spiracle, of which two enter the foreleg (supraventral trachea, trachea pedalis anterior). These two tracheae run separately through the leg to the femur-tibia joint where

Biomonitoring of genotoxicity of industrial fertilizer pollutants in Aiolopus thalassinus (Orthoptera: Acrididae) using alkaline comet assay.

Phosphate fertilizer industry is considered as one of the main sources of environmental pollutants. Besides solid waste products, e.g. phosphates, sulphates, and heavy metals, also atmospheric pollutants, such as hydrofluoric acid fumes (HF), sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NO2), and particulate matter with diameter up to 10 μm (PM10) can be dangerous. Genotoxic effect of these pollutants was monitored by assessing the DNA damage using alkaline comet assay on cells from brain, thoracic muscles and gut of Aiolopus thalassinus collected at three sites (A-C) located at 1, 3, and 6 km away
