Various orthotic devices generally employed for therapy of ankle sprain were tested under functional conditions. The experimental setup comprised inversion stimuli of 20 and 30 degrees (13 subjects) while standing on a tiltplatform as well as running movements of 8 and 12 km.h-1 on a treadmill (12 subjects). Ankle joint displacements were registered together with the surface EMGs from mm. peroneus long., tibialis ant., gastrocnemius med. and vastus med. In an additional study the relation between achilles tendon angle and talar tilt was determined under static conditions. Ten subjects with chr

BACKGROUND: Shoe inserts, orthopaedic shoes, ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are important devices in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) management, but data about use, benefits and tolerance are scanty.
METHODS: We administered to Italian CMT Registry patients an online ad hoc questionnaire investigating use, complications and perceived benefit/tolerability/emotional distress of shoe inserts, orthopaedic shoes, AFOs and other orthoses/aids. Patients were also asked to fill in the Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with assistive Technology questionnaire, rating satisfaction with currently used

Orthoses are commonly prescribed to relieve symptoms for musculoskeletal and neurological conditions; however, patients stop wearing orthoses as recommended for many reasons. When considering the effectiveness of orthoses, there needs to be an objective way to monitor whether participants wear the orthosis as instructed, because if this is not followed, the orthoses will not work as intended. This review aimed to identify, summarise, and compare objective methods used to measure compliance with orthoses applied to the extremities. Databases (Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, and MEDLINE)

Strengthening exercises like those used to treat carpal tunnel syndrome have been recommended for prevention however their effectiveness when used in this manner are not known. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the Flextend Orthotic Device on grip strength of dental hygiene students. This study used a convenience sample of 24 (n=24) first year dental hygiene students. Students were randomly assigned to either the Flextend Orthotic Exercise glove group or a control group. A series of grip strength measurements were taken periodically throughout the study using a hydrauli

In a prospective study, quantitative measures of the structure of the longitudinal arch of the foot were established and related to the incidence of stress fractures in the bones of the lower limbs of military recruits. In addition, the role of a semirigid orthotic device (Langer military stress orthotic) in preventing stress fractures was evaluated as a function of the structure of the longitudinal arch. Femoral and tibial stress fractures were found to be more prevalent in the presence of feet with high arches, whereas the incidence of metatarsal fractures was higher in feet with low arches.

BACKGROUND: The conservative management of Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) commonly utilises various orthotic devices to facilitate healing alongside functional rehabilitation protocols. However, comparative evidence regarding functional outcomes, complication rates, re-rupture rates and return to pre-injury status between individual orthoses remains limited. The aim of this systematic review was to assess which orthotic device yielded the best results for these categories.
METHODS: We performed a systematic review of 14 studies including 2011 patients treated non-operatively for ATR with five

PURPOSE: To evaluate the use of orthotic devices (splints) in an attempt to resolve trigger finger.
METHODS: Data were extracted from 46 charts during a five-year period from January 2005 to December 2010. At ten weeks, patients were seen for follow-up assessment of pain and stage of stenosing tenosynovitis (SST). One-year follow-up was performed to determine if the patients required further surgical intervention or steroid injection. The data were analyzed to determine the efficacy of orthosis intervention.
RESULTS: Mean pain score preorthotic is 5.63 and postorthotic is 1.20. Mean SST scor

Stroke and spinal cord injury are common neurological disorders that can cause various dysfunctions. Motor dysfunction is a common dysfunction that easily leads to complications such as joint stiffness and muscle contracture and markedly impairs the daily living activities and long-term prognosis of patients. Orthotic devices can prevent or compensate for motor dysfunctions. Using orthotic devices early can help prevent and correct deformities and treat muscle and joint problems. An orthotic device is also an effective rehabilitation tool for improving motor function and compensatory abilities

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at evaluating the acute effect of the combined and single use of two orthotic devices (neck balance system [NBS] and lumbar support [LS]) on muscle activity of neck and back muscles during typical computer working tasks.
BACKGROUND: An excessive activation of neck muscles could threaten the balance between agonist and antagonist muscles, resulting in a lower stability of the head and possibly leading to neck pain. At present, no study evaluated the effect of a specific orthotic device in reducing neck muscles activation.
METHODS: Surface electromyography (sEMG) fr

INTRODUCTION: Hallux rigidus, or restricted dorsiflexion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint, is a frequent musculoskeletal disorder disrupting gait biomechanics and general health. This review extends existing literature by providing a focused synthesis of biomechanical and clinical outcomes associated with different orthotic designs in hallux rigidus, highlighting their moderate effectiveness and the substantial heterogeneity in outcome measures and orthotic configurations.
METHODS: Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science were searched for randomized controlled trials that assessed the effect

It is important for individuals who have suffered a stroke to be able to experience a weight-bearing aerobic workout, if able. For individuals post-stroke who experience genu recurvatum during gait, care should be taken to minimize abnormal forces on the posterior and internal structures of the involved knee. The purpose of this case study was to assess the biomechanics of the involved knee during the stance phase of gait of an individual who, post-stroke, walked with a stiff-knee gait in 9 different orthotic conditions. It was hypothesized that a knee-extension-limiting orthotic would minimiz
