Mineral oil viscosity and quantity impact osmotic pressure, not embryo development.

Dry incubators prevent bacterial growth and allow time-lapse imaging. However, they cause more significant osmotic pressure changes in the culture medium than in humidified incubators. Few reports have explored the effect of osmotic pressure on human embryos cultured under different conditions. This study examined how changes in osmotic pressure affect human embryos in a dry incubator. The study incubated embryos in culture mediums covered with mineral oil of varying viscosities and quantities. The osmotic pressure of the culture medium was measured daily for six-day period (Day 0-6) in four e

Measurement of plasma colloid osmotic pressure in normal thoroughbred neonatal foals.

A normal plasma colloid osmotic pressure (COP) interval was established for foals and compared to values for adult horses. Plasma samples were obtained from 38 Thoroughbred foals that had normal findings on postfoaling examination and 10 healthy Thoroughbred adult horses. Samples were analyzed using a commercially available colloid osmometer. Fifty samples were obtained from 38 foals. Twelve foals had 2 samples taken, 1 during the 1st 24 hours of life and the 2nd between 24 and 72 hours of life. For foals with 2 samples, only 1 randomly selected value was used in group analysis. Total plasma p

Plasma colloid osmotic pressure, Briones index and ascites in preeclampsia-eclampsia.

BACKGROUND: Capillary leak in preeclampsia-eclampsia (P-E) can be evaluated by calculating the plasma colloid osmotic pressure (COP) and the Briones index (BI). We undertook this study to report the values of plasma COP and BI in patients with P-E. We compared their correlation with ascites. METHODS: We studied 225 pregnant patients with P-E. We calculated plasma COP and BI as a total group and in three categories: 1) severe preeclampsia (SP) patients without HELLP syndrome, 2) SP patients with HELLP syndrome and 3) patients with eclampsia. We compared the correlation of both parameters as we

Low colloid osmotic pressure in very low birthweight infants receiving assisted ventilation.

Plasma colloid osmotic pressure (COP) was measured in three groups of very low birthweight infants. Babies in Group 1 (n = 8) were breathing spontaneously and had no respiratory disease. Those in Group 2 (n = 9) received assisted ventilation for hyaline membrane disease (HMD), and those in Group 3 (n = 7) received assisted ventilation for other reasons (five apnoea, two pneumonia). Both assisted ventilation groups had lower mean COP values than spontaneously breathing infants. Mean values (s.e.m.) for Groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively, were: 15.3 (0.6), 11.3 (0.4) and 11.9 mmHg (0.5) (P less tha

Observations on colloid osmotic pressure, hematocrit, and plasma osmolality during cardiac arrest.

A porcine model of cardiac arrest with irreversible electromechanical dissociation was associated with highly significant decreases in colloid osmotic pressure in the absence of increases in hematocrit during the initial half hour of CPR. Pulmonary edema was typically observed. These observations are best explained by increases in capillary permeability to plasma proteins. The progression of acidemia was remarkably slow; arterial blood pH remained normal for more than 16 min. Even though there was significant lactic acidosis, concurrent respiratory alkalosis during CPR accounted for the greatl

The significance of colloid osmotic pressure measurement after crystalloid and colloid infusions.

Colloid osmotic pressure (COP) was followed postoperatively in 55 randomized patients. After minor operations and short-term infusion therapy only small changes of the COP could be observed and it was concluded that after such operations COP measurement is unnecessary. After major surgical interventions, however, COP measurement gave valuable hints. It was shown that even in the case of moderate blood loss replaced by crystalloids an abnormally low COP did not occur. The same applied also to preoperative hemodilution. It was unnecessary to substitute the withdrawn blood with a colloid solution

Submicron-Sized In Situ Osmotic Pressure Sensors for In Vitro Applications in Biology.

Physical forces are important cues in determining the development and the normal function of biological tissues. While forces generated by molecular motors have been widely studied, forces resulting from osmotic gradients have been less considered in this context. A possible reason is the lack of direct in situ measurement methods that can be applied to cell and organ culture systems. Herein, novel kinds of resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based liposomal sensors are developed, so that their sensing range and sensitivity can be adjusted to satisfy physiological osmotic conditions. Several type

[Relation of hypoxia and edema of the intestinal wall and skin to colloid osmotic pressure].

Whereas the impact of colloids and crystalloids on hypoxia and edema has been extensively debated with respect to pulmonary function, their corresponding effects on the systemic circulation have been largely ignored. Manifest edema of the intestine and skin develops, however, when the serum colloid osmotic pressure (COP) is lowered to 15 mm Hg or less by crystalloid infusions. Hypoxia of wounds, which may be aggravated by crystalloids, impairs healing and antibacterial defense, and its has been speculated that edema and/or hypoxia of the intestine may be associated with postoperative gastroint

Effect of mannitol and furosemide on blood-brain osmotic gradient and intracranial pressure.

The effect of mannitol (1.0 gm/kg) and furosemide (0.7 mg/kg), alone and in combination, on the blood-brain extracellular fluid and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) osmotic gradient, elevated intracranial pressure (ICP), CSF and serum osmolality, and urine output was studied in 26 mongrel dogs. Mannitol and furosemide, when used together, produced a greater (62.4% versus 56.6%) and more sustained (5 hours versus 2 hours) fall in ICP than mannitol alone. This correlated with a prolongation of the reversal of the blood-brain osmotic gradient (-3.4 to + 38.5 mOsm/kg) and a rate of urine formation 15 tim

Fluid balance and colloid osmotic pressure in acute respiratory failure: optimizing therapy.

Acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome continue to be major causes of morbidity and mortality in the intensive care unit due to a lack of specific effective therapy. Affecting nearly 200,000 people every year in the USA alone, patients with this syndrome often require extensive intensive care unit and hospital care, leading to enormous utilization of healthcare resources and significant expenditures, and ultimately leaving survivors with a reduced quality of life. A disease of altered capillary permeability, acute lung injury (ALI)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)

Influence of crystalloid versus colloid infusion on peripartum colloid osmotic pressure changes.

Plasma colloid osmotic pressure acts to retain fluid in the intravascular space. Intravenous crystalloids have been identified as one of the major factors contributing to the consistent peripartum decline in colloid osmotic pressure. This study was undertaken to compare the effect of two crystalloid infusions (1000 and 2000 mL Plasma-Lyte A) and a colloid infusion (1000 mL 5% albumin) on the peripartum colloid osmotic pressure. Before elective cesarean section, 45 parturients received one of the three infusions. The lowest mean maternal colloid osmotic pressure (16.6 +/- 1.1 mmHg, P less than

Colloid osmotic pressure and fluid resuscitation with hetastarch, albumin, and saline solutions.

The effects of fluid resuscitation with 6% hetastarch, 5% albumin, or 0.9% saline solutions on plasma colloid osmotic pressure (COP) were examined in 26 patients with hypovolemic circulatory shock. One liter of hetastarch produced a 36% increase in COP compared to an 11% increase after 1 L of albumin (p less than 0.001). One liter of saline resulted in a 12% decrease in COP (p less than 0.05). The mean COP increased from 16.3 +/- 1.6 (SE) mm Hg to a maximum of 23.7 +/- 1.4 mm Hg during the first 24 h of hetastarch resuscitation (p less than 0.01), and from 17.0 +/- 1.1 to 22.3 +/- 1.5 mm Hg wi

The effect of colloid osmotic pressure on the survival of sheep following cardiac surgery.

The occurrence of late complications in implanted cardiac prosthetic valves has emphasized the need for the development of an animal model in which these complications are reproducible. Sheep constitute an excellent model for chronical and pathological studies of prosthetic devices. In our experience, survival of sheep following implantation of prosthetic valves is closely related to postoperative serum colloid osmotic pressure (C.O.P.). The normal range as measured in 28 healthy sheep was 16.67 +/- 0.55 mm Hg. A protocol was developed to maintain the colloid hydrostatic pressure gradient (C.H

Effects of osmotic and oncodiuretic therapy on CT-brain density and intracranial pressure.

This study was performed to determine the effects of osmotic and oncodiuretic therapy on CT-brain density (CT-BD) and on intracranial pressure (ICP) in normal monkeys. CT scans were obtained before therapy then hourly for six hours. ICP was measured before therapy and was continuously monitored thereafter. Four monkeys in group I received oncodiuretic therapy (furosemide-albumin) for the first five hours, then osmotic therapy (mannitol) was added for one hour. Four monkeys in group II received mannitol during the first hour of therapy, then oncodiuretic therapy was added for the remaining four

Modeling Lipid Vesicles' Dynamic Response to Osmotic Pressure to Quantify Small-Molecule Transport.

Lipid membrane permeability is fundamental for cellular homeostasis, signaling, and drug transport. Experimental methods exist to characterize it, from cell-based assays to more reproducible artificial, filter-supported systems. Although they closely mimic physiological environments, these assays pose challenges for quantitative analysis. Simpler models, such as supported lipid bilayers and liposomes, offer better control of experimental variables and membrane composition, making them suitable for detailed physicochemical investigations. The dynamic response of unilamellar lipid vesicles to os
