A rare occurrence of osteoblastoma in a child.

To report a rare occurrence of osteoblastoma involving the L4 vertebra in an 8-year-old female child with histological features suggestive of osteoblastoma with secondary aneurysmal changes. The mean age incidence of osteoblastoma is 20.4 years. In our case, a rare presentation of osteoblastoma was seen in the first decade. The child was admitted with a 1-year history of increasing back pain and radiculopathy. The child was evaluated with X-rays, computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging, which indicated involvement of the posterior elements of the 4(th) lumbar vertebrae. Decompr

Aggressive osteoblastoma of the proximal humerus.

A nine-year-old boy presented with increasingly worsening right shoulder pain of 18 months' duration. On physical examination, there was a tender firm swelling over the right upper arm. Radiographs showed a large osteolytic lesion in the proximal humeral diaphysis, with prominent mixed acute-on-chronic periosteal reaction in a lamellar fashion. There was a pathological fracture. The lesion appeared to be radiographically aggressive in nature. Bone scintiscan showed solitary marked uptake. On-table frozen section histopathological examination of the lesion showed an osteoblastic lesion with agg

Osteoblastoma of the Mandible: A Case Report.

Osteoblastoma is a rare, benign bone tumor primarily affecting the spine but can occasionally involve the jaws, particularly the mandible. This report discusses the case of a 38-year-old female patient presenting with mild pain and swelling in the left mandibular region for the past few months. Clinical, radiographic, and histopathological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of osteoblastoma. A conservative surgical excision was performed. No recurrence was observed on follow-up. Differential diagnoses included low-grade osteosarcoma, osteoid osteoma, and other bone-forming lesions. This case r

Osteoblastoma of the Temporal Bone in a Child.

This report describes osteoblastoma of the temporal bone found on a well-child visit. The relevant clinical, radiographic, and histologic features are described. The tumor was completely resected via a transtemporal approach. The differential diagnosis for these tumors include osteoma, giant cell tumor, histiocytosis, aneurysmal bone cyst and sarcoma. Histologic findings are critical for determining the proper diagnosis.

[Osteoblastoma of the ankle: an uncommon location].

Osteoblastoma is a rare benign bone tumor occurring in adults younger than 30 years, with a clear predominance in men. It mainly occurs at the level of the spine and of the diaphysis in long bones. It occurs exceptionally in the ankle. We here report the case of an adult patient with osteoblastoma of the left ankle revealed by localized pain and partial functional disability. Standard radiographic evaluation was normal. Given the persistence of complaints CT scan was performed, but findings resulted in a misdiagnosis of osteochondritis. Anatomo-pathological examination of the surgical specimen

Osteoblastomas of the spine: a comprehensive review.

Osteoblastomas are primary bone tumors with an affinity for the spine. They typically involve the posterior elements, although extension through the pedicles into the vertebral body is not uncommon. Histologically, they are usually indistinguishable from osteoid osteomas. However, there are different variants of osteoblastomas, with the more aggressive type causing more pronounced bone destruction, soft-tissue infiltration, and epidural extension. A bone scan is the most sensitive radiographic examination used to evaluate osteoblastomas. These osseous neoplasms usually present in the 2nd decad

Osteoblastoma: a study of 12 cases.

This study comprises of 12 cases of osteoblastoma. There were 8 males and 4 females, with a mean age of 17.8 years. The vertebral column, including the sacrum was the most frequent site (10 of 12 cases). Radiologically the lesions were lytic, well circumscribed and expansile. The histology consisted of intercommunicating osteoid seams lined by plump osteoblasts with numerous intervening ectatic stromal vessels. Despite these characteristic features, the distinction of osteoblastoma from osteoblastic osteosarcoma can at times be very problematic. The lack of lace-like osteoid or sheets of osteo

Osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma of the spine.

Eleven patients with spinal osteoid osteoma and six patients with spinal osteoblastoma treated between 1975 and 1990 were reviewed to characterize the tumors as they affect the spine and to define the important differences between the two tumors. All patients with cervical osteoid osteoma presented with pain, limited range of motion of the neck, and torticollis. Four osteoblastomas had soft-tissue components in the epidural space, necessitating dissection of the tumor from the dura. No soft-tissue component was found in any of the osteoid osteomas. Our results were similar to a metaanalysis of

[Benign osteoblastoma of the parietal bones].

Benign osteoblastoma accounts for less than 1% of the primary bone tumors and the calvarial lesion is extremely rare. There are only 12 reported cases in the literature as far as we could collect. We have presented a case of benign osteoblastoma originated from the parietal bone. This 9-year-old boy struck his head on the parietal region and noticed the bulging at the same site. A month later he visited to Fukuoka University Hospital because of persistent bulging of the same site. Neurological examinations were normal. Plain skull roentgenogram on Towne view showed radiolucent area in the midl

Paediatric fronto-orbital osteoblastoma: case report.

Osteoblastoma is a rare benign bone tumour. It represents 1% of all primary bone tumours. Common locations are the vertebral column and long bones of the extremities. Although well documented in craniofacial locations, only occasional case reports describe orbital involvement. The authors present a case of a fronto-orbital osteoblastoma which posed a significant diagnostic dilemma. Despite early local recurrence, the molecular findings were supportive of a benign lesion.

Osteoblastoma of the thumb with a novel PRSS44::ALK fusion and literature review of osteoblastoma of hands and feet bones.

Osteoblastomas (OBs) are benign neoplasms constituting approximately 1% of primary bone tumors with a predilection for the spine and sacrum. We describe an OB of the proximal phalanx of the left thumb in a 38-year-old female. MRI of left hand demonstrated a 29-mm mildly expansile enhancing lesion involving the entire proximal phalanx of the first digit. Histology displayed a bone-forming tumor consisting of trabeculae of remodeled woven bone framed by plump osteoblasts in a vascularized background. Next-generation sequencing analysis identified a PRSS44::ALK fusion gene.

Osteoblastoma: clinicopathologic study of 306 cases.

The clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features of 306 osteoblastomas were analyzed. Seventy-five were Mayo Clinic cases and 231 were from consultation files. Males outnumbered females two to one. The age range was 6 months to 75 years (mean age, 20.4 years). The vertebral column including the sacrum was the most frequent site (32%). Pain was the usual complaint and neurologic findings were associated with vertebral tumors. Although most tumors were well circumscribed, cortical expansion and destruction were common radiographic findings (39%), and 12% had features suggestive of malignancy. L

Benign osteoblastoma of the mandible: a case report.

Osteoblastoma is a rare benign neoplasm formed by osteoid tissue and well-vascularized bone that occurs mainly in children and adolescents. It appears primarily in the long bones, vertebral column, and small bones of the hands and feet, and not typically in the skull and maxillary bones. The purpose of this study is to present the case of an 8-year-old girl with a diagnosis of right mandibular osteoblastoma and a review of the relevant literature. The goals of treatment were to preserve dental occlusion, masticatory function and facial symmetry while minimizing the effects on patient body imag

A rare case of giant osteoblastoma of the sacrum.

BACKGROUND: An osteoblastoma is a rare benign bone tumor characterized by formation of osteoid tissue and primitive bone and occurs more often in men than in women. They are often secondary to an osteoid osteoma and can be located at any site on the skeleton. Lesions generally involve the posterior elements of the spine, such as the pedicle and the lamina. CASE PRESENTATION: This study reports the case of a 25-year-old female who suffered from an osteoblastoma of the right sacrum with repeated swelling and pain in the right lumbosacral region for approximately 6 months. STUDY DESIGN: We describe our surgical experience to remove osteoid osteomas and osteoblastomas of the occipitocervical junction. In this location, vertebral artery vicinity requires special consideration. OBJECTIVES: We illustrate our surgical approaches to remove lesions confidently, while minimizing bone resection to preserve stability. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Up until now, osteoid osteomas and osteoblastomas of the occipitocervical junction are reported as case reports. Several treatment methods have been described to treat osteoid osteomas. Nevertheless, surgery is the treatment of

Osteoblastoma of the coccyx. A report of two cases.

Osteoblastoma, defined as a benign bone tumor by Jaffe and Lichtenstein, together with osteoid osteoma and multifocal osteoblastoma, belongs to the osteoblastic tumors. Due to the variable features of this tumor, differential diagnosis comprises fibrous dysplasia, giant cell tumor, aneurysmal bone cyst and osteoid osteoma; histological analysis is the only way to obtain a definite answer about the tumor type. Occasionally differential diagnosis from aggressive osteoblastoma and osteosarcoma may be difficult. The history of symptoms is usually long and diagnosis may be difficult both clinically
