Osteology of the thoracic limb of the African elephant (Loxodonta africana).

The forelimb bones of 8 elephants (7 adults, 1 juvenile) were studied. In addition, the bones of the digits were dissected and studied in situ in a mature specimen. The scapula, humerus and bones of the antebrachium (particularly the ulna) are massive in comparison to the short, relatively small bones of the manus. There are 8 carpal bones, 5 metacarpal bones and 5 digits. Digits 2-4 consist of 3 phalanges each. The 5th digit consists of 2 phalanges, while the 1st is represented by a single phalanx which is tusk-like and pointed. The distal phalanges of digits 2-4 are very small and do not art

Cranial osteology of Neotropical squamate reptiles of the genus Riama (Gymnophthalmidae: Cercosaurinae).

Cranial bones of squamate reptiles diverge in shape and structure across lineages, while preserving the basic skull plan. Therefore, variation in cranial morphology of squamates is key to understanding phylogenetic relationships, species delimitation, and lifestyles, which ultimately contribute to insights into their evolution and ecology. Nevertheless, although Gymnophthalmidae is the most diverse endemic non-ophidian squamate family in the Neotropics, studies on comparative cranial osteology within this lineage remain scarce. Herein, we thoroughly describe and compare the external skull anat

[Management of osteologic and renal comorbidities in patients with rheumatic diseases].

Osteoporosis as well as renal, pulmonary, and cardiovascular diseases must always be considered in the treatment of patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases. Regardless of whether they are an organ manifestation of the underlying rheumatic disease, a medication side effect, or a comorbidity, these diseases have a decisive influence on morbidity, mortality, and therapeutic decisions. Osteoporosis and renal diseases require increased vigilance from the treating rheumatologist, as they are often initially asymptomatic. The following article provides guideline-based recommendations for monito

Accessory tympanic plate ossicle: a new osteological entity.

The auricular cartilage, which is typically soft and flexible, can calcify or ossify because of diseases such as diabetes mellitus, trauma, radiation therapy for cancer, and more commonly from frostbite. Calcified, ossified, or hardened auricular cartilage is a rare finding in the clinical literature and appears to be absent in the physical and forensic anthropological literature. This study examines the ossified auricular cartilage and tests whether the hypothesis can be identified in postmortem skeletonized tissue and be part of the external auditory meatus. A total of 290 crania were examin

Costoclavicular Joint: An Osteological Study on Clavicles with Clinical Relevance.

Introduction The current study aims to detect the incidence of occurrence of a morphological variant of the impression for the costoclavicular ligament, that is a faceted apophysis of the clavicle which participates in the formation of an aberrant joint, the so-called costoclavicular joint. Methods A material of 208 dry clavicles, 107 of right and 101 of left side derived from an osteological collection, was examined in order to detect the likely presence of facet apophysis at the clavicular area of impression for the costoclavicular ligament. Results We observed three cases of oval-shaped fac

Forelimb musculature and osteological correlates in Sauropodomorpha (Dinosauria, Saurischia).

This contribution presents the forelimb muscular arrangement of sauropodomorph dinosaurs as inferred by comparisons with living archosaurs (crocodiles and birds) following the Extant Phylogenetic Bracket approach. Forty-one muscles were reconstructed, including lower limb and manus musculature, which prior information available was scarce for sauropodomorphs. A strong emphasis was placed on osteological correlates (such as tubercles, ridges and striae) and comparisons with primitive archosauromorphs are included in order to track these correlates throughout the clade. This should help to eluci

Osteological and molecular identification of Brucellosis in ancient Butrint, Albania.

Ancient skeletal remains can harbor unique information about past civilizations at both the morphological and molecular levels. For instance, a number of diseases manifest in bone, some of which have been confirmed through DNA analysis, verifying their presence in ancient populations. In this study, anthropological analysis of skeletal remains from the ancient Albanian city of Butrint identified individuals with severe circular lytic lesions on their thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. Differential diagnosis suggested that the lesions resulted from pathologies known to affect these skeletal regions

Atlanto-occipital fusion: an osteological study with clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: Atlanto-occipital fusion may be symptomatic or asymptomatic in nature. The anomaly may be incidentally detected at autopsies or during routine cadaveric dissections. The fusion of the atlas with occipital bone may result in the compression of vertebral artery and first cervical nerve. METHODS: A total of 55 dried occipital bones in the Department of Anatomy, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Department of Anatomy, Universiti Malaya (UM) were included in the study. The presence of atlantooccipital fusion was closely observed and morphometric measurements were taken. RESULTS

Breed specific osteological features of the canine lumbosacral junction.

Inefficient facet geometry suggests the lumbosacral junction to be mechanically imperfect in a large number of dogs (especially German Shepherd Dogs) resulting in a significantly higher prevalence of osteophyte formation and increase in the longitudinal extension of the articular surface covering the caudal articular process of the seventh lumbar vertebra. Such osteological features give evidence for lumbosacral craniocaudal translation, were predominantly noticed in combination with axial rotation and are taken to be anatomic risk factors that can predispose to the development of lumbosacral

The Hamann-Todd Human Osteological Collection: A Representative Sample?

OBJECTIVES: The Hamann-Todd Human Osteological Collection (HTHOC) is a documented skeletal collection that has been foundational to the fields of biological anthropology and forensic anthropology. In constructing these standards, the HTHOC has been used as though it encapsulates the range of biological variation of humanity in North America. The powerful role that structural and cultural violence played in the creation of the HTHOC suggests that these individuals are not representative of broader Cleveland, let alone North America. Our goal is to assess several of the biases in the HTHOC. We c

Tuberculosis in early medieval Switzerland--osteological and molecular evidence.

Lesions consistent with skeletal tuberculosis were found in 13 individuals from an early medieval skeletal sample from Courroux (Switzerland). One case of Pott's disease as well as lytic lesions in vertebrae and joints, rib lesions and endocranial new bone formation were identified. Three individuals with lesions and one without were tested for the presence of Myobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) ancient DNA (aDNA), and in two cases, evidence for MTBC aDNA was detected. Our results suggest the presence of tuberculosis in the analysed material, which is in accordance with other osteological

Osteology of the Feeding Apparatus of Chilean Flamingo Phoenicopterus chilensis (Aves: Phoenicopteridae).

Flamingos (Phoenicopteridae) feed using a uniquely adapted bill that extracts small particles from the water and sediments. This study provides a detailed osteological description of the skull of the Chilean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis), with particular emphasis on feeding-related features. The skull exhibits a broad, flattened frontal region that articulates with an elongated upper jaw, which is deflected ventrally at approximately 45° and aligns seamlessly with the laterorostrally curved mandible, forming a configuration well suited for filter feeding. The mandible exhibits a low mech

The osteology of the Late Triassic reptile Scleromochlus taylori from μCT data.

Scleromochlus taylori is one of the most enigmatic members of the herpetofauna from the Lossiemouth Sandstone Formation (Upper Triassic) of Elgin (Moray, Scotland). For many years it was thought to be closely related to pterosaurs and dinosaurs, but the anatomy of this animal is difficult to interpret because of the notoriously poor preservation of the six available specimens, which comprise void space in the sandstone after the bones were destroyed by diagenesis. Historically, these fossils have been studied using physical molds, which provide only incomplete, and potentially distorted, infor

The osteology of the African elephant (Loxodonta africana): vertebral column, ribs and sternum.

The vertebral column, sternum and ribs of the African elephant were studied and illustrated. In the cervical series, the vertebrae are characterized by very short (compressed) vertebral bodies and short spinous processes. There are 20-21 thoracic vertebrae that carry ribs, and three lumbar vertebrae. The neural arches of the five sacral vertebrae fuse with each other as well as with the wings of the ilium, while the intervertebral discs do not ossify and the vertebral bodies remain separate. There are 19-21 caudal vertebrae. In the latter, the neural arches of only the first five to six verteb

Palatal analysis and osteology of the hard palate of the Kenyan African skulls.

One hundred twenty-five dry skulls from Kenya that consisted of about 90% Bantu individuals were examined to obtain data on the gross anatomy of the hard palate. The palatine index showed that 43.2% of the total sample of skulls has narrow (leptostaphyline), 23.7% intermediate (mesostaphyline), and 33.1% wide (brachystaphyline) palates. The palatine height index showed that 40% skulls had low (chamestaphyline), 57% intermediate (orthostaphyline), and 3.0% deep (hypsistaphyline) palates. Mean palatal length, breadth, and height for the total sample was 4.92 cm, 4.02 cm, and 1.22 cm, respectivel

[Osteological interdisciplinary management : exemplified by a bilateral proximal humeral fracture].

Following locking plate osteosynthesis of a proximal humeral fracture, a 62-year-old male patient suffered mild secondary dislocation. Subsequent bone densitometry identified an osteoporosis. Laboratory testing and sonography revealed an underlying primary hyperparathyroidism. In the short term, the patient suffered a similar proximal humeral fracture of the contralateral side. Given the knowledge about the underlying osteoporosis a cement-augmented locking plate osteosynthesis was carried out to treat the fracture. Parathyroidectomy was performed shortly thereafter and laboratory parameters r
