The branch of medicine known as osteopathy was founded by Andrew Taylor Still in the mid to late 19th century. Osteopathy is a philosophy of medicine. Osteopathic physicians use techniques collectively referred to as osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM). One of the most common diseases suffered by those residing in westernized nations is hypertension. Although osteopathic physicians are taught to incorporate OMM into the management of medical disorders, the usefulness of OMM in treating hypertension is less clear. This review reflects on the past 90 years of biomedical literature and attemp

Spinal manipulation, as practiced by US-trained osteopathic physicians, is a safe and effective method of resolving patient pain and encouraging desirable physiologic improvement--often without pharmacologic intervention. Though novices, laypeople, and other clinicians also use manual techniques with similar goals in mind, their results are varied and sometimes dangerous to those they would help. The authors describe a case in which a layperson attempted spinal manipulation on a 20-year-old woman who later required a chest tube thoracostomy and hospitalization as a result of a pneumothorax. CONTEXT: It is generally acknowledged that osteopathic physicians take a holistic approach to patient care. This style may help prevent the progression of painful musculoskeletal conditions, particularly if combined with osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT).
OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to determine if osteopathic medical care lowers the risk of progression from localized chronic low back pain to widespread pain and lessens the impact of pain on health-related quality of life.
METHODS: A historical cohort study was conducted within the Pain Registry for Epidemiological, Clinical, and Inte

OBJECTIVE: The International Consortium on Manual Therapies (ICMT) is a grassroots interprofessional association open to any formally trained practitioner of manual therapy (MT) and basic scientists promoting research related to the practice of MT. Currently, MT research is impeded by professions' lack of communication with other MT professions, biases, and vernacular. Current ICMT goals are to minimize these barriers, compare MT techniques, and establish an interprofessional MT glossary.
METHODS: Practitioners from all professions with training in manual therapies were encouraged by e-mail a

Drop foot arises from dysfunction within the anatomic, muscular, or neurologic aspects of the lower extremity. The authors describe a patient with drop foot who had a compressed common peroneal nerve caused by posterior fibular head dysfunction. One 15-minute session of osteopathic manipulative treatment resolved the patient's symptoms. It is important for physicians to use osteopathic manipulative medicine to diagnosis and manage this condition, particularly when it results from fibular head dysfunction.

Andrew Taylor Still, MD, DO, coined the original idea of lesion based on the obstruction of flow of body fluids, but primarily referring to bony structures and more precisely to the spine. Throughout the 20th century, this idea was shaped and developed into the concept of somatic dysfunction, a term that is familiar to both US-trained osteopathic physicians and foreign-trained osteopaths and has been an essential cornerstone of osteopathic practice and teaching. The present historical narrative review offers an overview of the evolution of Still's original lesion concept, major evidence-based

OBJECTIVE: Gastroenterology (GI) is a highly competitive fellowship with an overall match rate of approximately 60%, as of 2025. Despite representing roughly 11% of the United States (US) physicians, Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) are underrepresented across numerous subspecialties. This study analyzed osteopathic representation among trainees and program leadership of GI fellowships in the US. We hypothesized that DOs would have less representation in training programs and that that trainee representation would correlate with leadership composition.
METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis w

CONTEXT: Although a large proportion of US emergency physicians are osteopathic physicians (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine [DOs]), the frequency of osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) use in emergency departments (EDs) is unknown.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to estimate the frequency of OMM in EDs across the US and describe the cohort who received OMM.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of ED patients from 2018 to 2021 in the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS), Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Encounters with

Physical findings demarking pathologic somatovisceral reflex activity and fascial strain patterns may lead the osteopathic physician to diagnoses that are masked within the initial presentation of a patient. The authors present a case report that demonstrates the use of osteopathic principles in the diagnosis of a chronic acetabular fracture and acetabular labral tear in a 19-year-old man. The injuries resulted from a posterior hip dislocation sustained during a basketball game more than 1 year before presentation. Osteopathic manipulative treatment and diagnostic techniques also relieved the

In our highly active society, individuals and groups push their physical limits. Consequently, the incidence of whiplash injury is increasing. Patients may not recover rapidly or fully from a whiplash injury, thus leading to chronic neck and spinal symptoms and litigation. Physicians must recognize whiplash injury as a manifestation of total-body trauma and treat accordingly, with particular emphasis on alleviating abnormal tension of the fascia. Precise description of the accident, followed by healing methods tailored to well-defined bodily injury, aids in effective management. Whiplash injur

BACKGROUND: Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), also known as osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM), is a set of manual techniques, developed by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, founder of osteopathic medicine, initially limited to osteopathic medicine, for the treatment of painful conditions. This toolset is now used by allopathic physicians, international osteopaths, physical therapists, chiropractors, and other healthcare workers for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain. OMT can be used in the emergency department (ED) for the treatment of musculoskeletal complaints as an adjunct to pharma

BACKGROUND: Up to one osteopathic consultation out of four involve infants and children. Although the clinical effectiveness of osteopathic care in paediatric populations remains inconclusive, available evidence suggests that it is generally safe. In contrast, high velocity, low amplitude technique (HVLA) has been associated with potential adverse effects. To inform a professional position on the use of HVLA techniques in paediatric care, this study investigated (1) the use of HVLA techniques by osteopathic practitioners in the treatment of infants, children, and adolescents, and (2) the exten

Context Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) has been claimed to be effective in various human disorders and conditions. There have been many anecdotal claims to lend credence to the efficacy of this treatment modality. Recently, much work has been done in evidence-based, government-funded projects, and clinical trials in OMM research, and these studies have further demonstrated the efficacy of OMM as direct, integrated, or complementary mechanisms in treating various conditions. Objectives As the field of OMM research has grown significantly in the past few years, we set out to analyze the

Urogenital problems are dramatically increasing; especially chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) poses a major challenge for physicians and therapists. Few forms of therapy have been able to promise relief because the cause of CPPS remains unclear. Functional complaints are increasingly discussed as triggers. Osteopathic treatment has been reported to help many patients in recent years. In this article, the approach and osteopathic point of view of functional complaints are presented. In addition, possible causes for the development of CPPS and important anatomical structures that are directly

BACKGROUND: In Germany, more parents have been seeking help from osteopaths for their infants and children in recent years. This implies an increasing demand of reliable evidence regarding the effectiveness of osteopathic intervention for this group.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the 'typical' (most common) health concerns of parents when presenting their infants (age 0-12 months) in pediatric osteopathic practices.
METHODS: For the purpose of this survey, well-trained osteopaths who specialize in the treatment of children and infants were selected. A documentation form containing a list of the lik

Pediatric limp is a relatively common condition in primary care and can be challenging to diagnose and manage. Common causes of painful pediatric limp include transient synovitis, septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, and trauma. The authors present the case of an 11-year-old girl with a painful limp and anterior ankle pain of unclear origin. Osteopathic structural examination revealed a somatic dysfunction known as continuum distortion, 1 of 6 fascial alterations identified in the fascial distortion model. Myofascial release was applied, providing rapid, complete resolution of symptoms. This case

INTRODUCTION: Exercise is beneficial for improving general health, wellbeing, and specific medical conditions. In musculoskeletal conditions such as chronic low back and neck pain, prescribed exercise has been found to be moderately effective in decreasing pain and improving function. Osteopaths are primary contact health professionals who manage predominantly musculoskeletal complaints. This work presents a secondary data analysis of the Australian osteopathy practice-based research network and profiles the characteristics of osteopaths who often use exercise prescription in patient care. The aim of this study is to correlate cervical disc herniation with manipulation performed by a non-physician osteopath on a patient complaining of neck pain. The authors report a case in which a woman - treated with osteopathic spinal manipulation - developed cervical-brachial neuralgia following the cervical disc herniation. The patient then underwent surgery and was followed by physiotherapists. A clinical condition characterized by limitation of neck mobility, with pain and sensory deficit in the right arm and II-III fingers, still persists. The patient consulted the authors to establish w

CONTEXT: Quality mentorship for medical students and resident physicians throughout their medical education has been shown to be beneficial in supporting students in their academic and professional endeavors. There is no standardized approach for providing mentorship across institutions, and many students feel that they do not receive adequate mentorship. There is a paucity of literature about osteopathic mentorship, which is important to address due to the unique set of challenges faced by osteopathic medical students and residents.
OBJECTIVES: This review aims to evaluate the quality and av
