Osteopontin in pancreatic cancer: A systematic review.

The present study analyzed the available literature on osteopontin in pancreatic cancers. Before the cut-off date, PubMed listed 105 pertinent references, plus 39 results covering osteopontin in non-cancerous conditions of the pancreas. The molecule fulfills physiologic roles in pancreatic development and function, including islet survival and protection from hyperglycemia. Osteopontin has been found upregulated in cancers of the pancreas and may serve as a biomarker for transformation, progression or survival prospects, particularly in conjunction with other molecular indicators. It has been

Osteopontin as a Biomarker for Coronary Artery Disease.

Osteopontin (OPN) is a sialylated phosphoprotein highly expressed in atherosclerosis and upregulated in settings of both acute and chronic inflammation. It is hypothesised that plasma levels of OPN may correlate with the presence of coronary artery disease, "CAD". This offers potential as a point-of-care testing biomarker for early diagnosis, disease monitoring, and prognosis. This review evaluates the current literature on the association between plasma OPN levels and coronary artery disease and what is currently known to support its potential as a biomarker for future practice. Osteopontin and Clinical Outcomes in Hemodialysis Patients.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) are significant public health issues, with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality being the leading causes of death in hemodialysis patients. Osteopontin (OPN), a multifunctional glycoprotein, has emerged as a potential biomarker for vascular disease in CKD due to its role in inflammation, tissue remodeling, and calcification. METHODS: This cohort study included 1124 hemodialysis patients from the PROGREDIRE study, a registry involving 35 dialysis units in Southern Italy. Serum osteopontin levels were meas

Osteopontin is a biomarker for early autoimmune uveoretinitis.

Osteopontin (OPN) is an extracellular matrix protein with a diverse range of functions, including roles in cell adhesion, migration, and immunomodulation, which are associated with the modulation of neuroinflammation in the central nervous system. The present study was performed to evaluate the involvement of OPN in the eyes of an experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis (EAU) model. The EAU model was developed by immunization of Lewis rats with interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein. The results showed the OPN level was remarkably upregulated in the eye of EAU rats on day 9 post-immunizatio

Osteopontin and Transplantation: Where Are We Now?

Organ transplantation represents the optimal therapeutic tool for patients with end-stage organ failure. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is likewise an effective therapy for a wide range of malignant and non-malignant diseases. Better understanding of transplantation immunology and the use of multi-modal immunosuppression protocols, can decrease the risk of graft failure and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after HSCT. Nevertheless, a major challenge of modern transplantology still seems to be finding non-invasive biomarkers for recipients selection, monitoring of allograft func

Osteopontin in Bone Metabolism and Bone Diseases.

Osteopontin (OPN), a secreted phosphoprotein, is a member of the small integrin-binding ligand N-linked glycoprotein (SIBLING) family of cell matrix proteins and participates in many biological activities. Studies have shown that OPN plays a role in bone metabolism and homeostasis. OPN not only is an important factor in neuron-mediated and endocrine-regulated bone mass, but also is involved in biological activities such as proliferation, migration, and adhesion of several bone-related cells, including bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, hematopoietic stem cells, osteoclasts, and osteoblasts. Osteopontin expression in reactive lesions of gingiva.

Reactive proliferations of the gingiva comprise lesions such as pyogenic granuloma (PG), inflammatory fibroepithelial hyperplasia (IFH), peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF), and peripheral giant cell lesion. Osteopontin (OPN) has a dual role, it promotes mineralization when it is bound to solid substrate, and on the other hand, it inhibits mineralization when it is seen in association with solution. Objectives The study aimed to evaluate the expression of osteopontin in normal gingival tissue and different types of focal reactive proliferations of gingival tissue, and its role in the developmen

Role of osteopontin in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystemic disease, caused by a variety of factors, which lead to immunological abnormalities. Osteopontin (OPN) is a pleiotropic protein, important in bone remodeling and immune system signaling. OPN, produced by various cells, including immune cells, plays a key role in regulating T-helper 1/T-helper 2 balance, stimulating B lymphocytes to produce antibodies, regulating macrophages, neutrophils and inducing dendritic cells. OPN expression is influenced by genetic polymorphisms of its promoter, hormones and cytokines. Over expression of OPN has been

Osteopontin predicts the behaviour of atypical meningioma.

AIM: Although the World Health Organization (WHO) histological criteria distinguishing benign from atypical and malignant meningioma are clear, discerning benign from atypical meningioma is still somewhat difficult, leading to interobserver diagnostic variability. Osteopontin (OPN) and cortactin play important roles in tumorigenesis, invasion and metastasis of several human cancers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of OPN and cortactin immunohistochemistry for distinguishing between benign, atypical and malignant meningioma and predicting their recurrence. Protective role of osteopontin in endodontic infection.

Endodontic infections are polymicrobial infections resulting in bone destruction and tooth loss. The host response to these infections is complex, including both innate and adaptive mechanisms. Osteopontin (OPN), a secreted, integrin-binding protein, functions in the regulation of immune responses and enhancement of leucocyte migration. We have assessed the role of OPN in the host response to endodontic infection using a well-characterized mouse model. Periapical bone loss associated with endodontic infection was significantly more severe in OPN-deficient mice compared with wild-type 3 weeks a

Tenascins and osteopontin in biological response in cornea.

The structural composition, integrity and regular curvature of the cornea contribute to the maintenance of its transparency and vision. Disruption of its integrity caused by injury results in scarring, inflammation and neovascularization followed by losses in transparency. These sight compromising effects is caused by dysfunctional corneal resident cell responses induced by the wound healing process. Upregulation of growth factors/cytokines and neuropeptides affect development of aberrant behavior. These factors trigger keratocytes to first transform into activated fibroblasts and then to myof

The Multifaceted Role of Osteopontin in Prostate Pathologies.

The prostate gland, located beneath the bladder and surrounding the proximal urethra in men, plays a vital role in reproductive physiology and sexual health. Despite its importance, the prostate is vulnerable to various pathologies, including prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer (PCa). Osteopontin (OPN), a versatile protein involved in wound healing, inflammatory responses, and fibrotic diseases, has been implicated in all three prostate conditions. The role of OPN in prostatic pathophysiology, affecting both benign and malignant prostate conditions, is significa

Osteopontin, a bridge links osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent joint disease characterized by degradation of articular cartilage, inflammation, and changes in periarticular and subchondral bone of joints. Osteoporosis (OP) is another systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and bone mineral density (BMD) accompanied by microarchitectural deterioration in bone tissue and increased bone fragility and fracture risk. Both OA and OP are mainly affected on the elderly people. Recent studies have shown that osteopontin (OPN) plays a vital role in bone metabolism and homeostasis. OPN involves these biologi

The role of osteopontin in the development and metastasis of melanoma.

Melanoma is a highly heterogeneous tumor. The incidence of melanoma increases with age and its long-term prognosis is poor. The treatment of melanoma includes surgical removal, chemotherapy and immunotherapy; however, the effect of these treatments is limited on mutated melanoma. Osteopontin is an extracellular protein which is expressed in numerous kinds of cells; it is related to the proliferation and invasion of cancer cells as well as the development of tumor microenvironment. The relationship between osteopontin and metastasis of melanoma has been clarified in recent years. This review fo

Osteopontin in the host response to Leishmania amazonensis.

BACKGROUND: Leishmania (L.) spp are intracellular eukaryotic parasites responsible for cutaneous or visceral leishmaniasis, replicating predominantly in macrophages (MF). In C57BL/6 mice virulence with L. amazonensis has been associated with inhibition of Th1 immune responses and an uncontrolled lesion development, whereas DBA/2 mice control any lesion. Parasitic clearance by the MFs requires the activation of proper immune responses. One of the immune related genes expressed in immune cells including MF, codes for osteopontin (OPN). Clinicopathological Significance of Osteopontin in Cholangiocarcinoma Cases.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is generally a rare primary liver tumor of the bile duct with extremely poor clinical outcomes due to late diagnosis. Osteopontin (OPN) is the most abundant expressed gene in intrahepatic CCA and its involvement in tumor aggressiveness suggests it could be a useful prognostic biomarker. However, the prognostic significance of OPN expression in CCA is still controversial. We therefore immunohistochemically studied OPN expression in 354 resected CCAs and correlated the results with patient clinicopathological parameters. OPN expression was separately scored according to

Osteopontin: a potential biomarker of Gaucher disease.

Gaucher disease (GD) is one of the most prevalent lysosomal storage disorders and the disorder that has the greatest immune system involvement. Pathologic lipid accumulation in macrophages accounts for a small amount of the additional tissue mass in the liver and spleen. The additional increase may be related to an inflammatory response because Gaucher cells secrete inflammatory mediators. Osteopontin (OPN) is a protein identified in cancer cells and in bone cells that is produced by several types of immune cells including T-cells and macrophages. We report here elevated OPN levels in the plas
