Seasonal pattern of inhibition of Ostertagia ostertagi in calves in northeast Mississippi.

The composition of, and seasonal changes in, populations of gastrointestinal parasites of calves in northeast Mississippi were determined for 10 months post-weaning. After weaning on 15 October, 20 mixed breed beef steers were grazed together on a 4 ha fescue/bermudagrass pasture. From November through August of the following year, two of the calves were removed each month for necropsy and counting of gastrointestinal nematodes. Eight species of worms were found: Haemonchus placei, Ostertagia ostertagi, Trichostrongylus axei, Bunostomum phlebotomum, Cooperia spp., Trichostrongylus colubriformi

Ostertagia ostertagi in neonatal calves: establishment of infection in ruminating and non-ruminating calves.

An experiment was carried out to study the role of the ruminal function in the establishment of Ostertagia ostertagi in neonatal calves. Three groups of calves were fed either milk only (groups A and C), or hay and concentrate in addition to milk (group B) from birth. At the time of infection, ruminal function was negligible in groups A and C, whereas it was well developed in group B. Calves of groups A and B were each given 25,000 normal ensheathed infective larvae of O ostertagi and those of group C were given 25,000 infective larvae exsheathed in vitro. Daily faecal egg output and post mort

Bovine ostertagiosis, a review. Analysis of types and syndromes found in France by post mortem examinations and total worm counts.

We have completed an analysis of the total worm counts (including digests) performed on 74 weaned cattle of various ages and sacrified in our laboratory. We identified 21 cases of animals suffering from Ostertagiosis (harbouring over 40,000 adults + immatures in the lumen and the mucosa) or moribund animals showing symptoms and lesions of Ostertagiosis. The results are presented with the Parasite profiles (percentage of G.I. genera) and Parasite levels ("Very low, Low and Average" for carrier animals and "High" and "Very High" for animals suffering from parasitism). We have observed typical ca

Plant-based production of a protective vaccine antigen against the bovine parasitic nematode Ostertagia ostertagi.

The development of effective recombinant vaccines against parasitic nematodes has been challenging and so far mostly unsuccessful. This has also been the case for Ostertagia ostertagi, an economically important abomasal nematode in cattle, applying recombinant versions of the protective native activation-associated secreted proteins (ASP). To gain insight in key elements required to trigger a protective immune response, the protein structure and N-glycosylation of the native ASP and a non-protective Pichia pastoris recombinant ASP were compared. Both antigens had a highly comparable protein st

The effects of a concurrent infection of Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Ostertagia circumcincta on calcium, phosphorus and magnesium transactions along the digestive tract of lambs.

Twelve lambs, paired on the basis of live weight, were cannulated in the abomasum, proximal jejunum and terminal ileum. Six were infected with 3000 T. colubriformis and 3000 O. circumcincta larvae per day for 18 weeks. The other six lambs were pair-fed to the infected lambs. All animals were offered fresh ryegrass and white clover pasture, cut daily. Dry matter intake, live weight and plasma Ca, P and Mg concentrations were measured throughout the experiment. During weeks 7 and 17 post-infection, digesta flow along the gastrointestinal tract of infected and control animals was measured. Parasi

The production of developmental defects of enamel in the incisor teeth of penned sheep resulting from induced parasitism.

Thirty-four sheep were infected with nematode parasites (Trichostrongylus spp. and Ostertagia circumcincta) during central incisor formation. The tooth enamel was examined for defects of mineralization at eruption and compared with that of 14 control sheep. The type and number of parasites given, the duration of the infection and the age of the sheep were varied. Sheep receiving high doses of parasites e.g. 200,000 T. vitrinus + 20,000 O. circumcincta showed severe systemic effects (debilitation, scouring and weight loss) which were of short duration (7-10 days) as the infections were terminat

Tetrachlorvinphos as an ineffective feed additive in control of gastrointestinal nematodes of beef cattle.

Tetrachlorvinphos was evaluated for anthelmintic efficacy as a feed additive against gastrointestinal nematodes of cattle. Tetrachlorvinphos was added to the mineral mixture of medicated cattle (n = 13) at the rate of 1.6 mg/day/kg of body weight for a 29-week period beginning May 2, 1975. Data suggest that the level of parasitism, as estimated by the number of nematode eggs per gram of feces, was not reduced by the addition of tetrachlorvinphos to the mineral mixture of medicated cattle. Results obtained from identification and quantification of nematodes recovered at necropsy from 6 medicate

Serological detection of Ostertagia ostertagi antibodies in cattle in Mosul city.

BACKGROUND: Ostertagia ostertagi is considered a great epidemic gastroenteric roundworm that affects cattle in temperate regions and places a central limitation on cattle productivity. This fact is supported by numerous reports. AIM: This study was carried out to detect specific antibodies against O. ostertagi in cow's milk and investigate the epidemiology of this parasite and its spread in the cows of Mosul city. METHODS: Milk samples were separately obtained from 200 cows. The animals suffered from emaciation, weight loss, and watery green diarrhea. Milk was centrifuged at 1,500 rpm for 10

Comparison of diagnostic methods for assessment of Ostertagia ostertagi exposure in Norwegian dairy herds.

BACKGROUND: The gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) Ostertagia ostertagi can cause severe disease in first season grazers (FSG) and impaired performance due to subclinical infections in adult cows. Diagnostic methods to assess exposure include faecal egg count and detection of specific antibodies using antibody-ELISAs resulting in an optical density ratio (ODR). Using the ELISA test on bulk tank milk (BTM) allows for a herd level diagnosis. Appropriate use of diagnostic methods for evaluation of O. ostertagi exposure is required to optimize herd parasite surveillance and aid in a sustainable contr

Anti-parasitic activity of pelleted sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) against Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora in calves.

BACKGROUND: Increasing anthelmintic-resistance in nematodes of ruminants emphasises the need for sustainable parasite control. Condensed tannin-containing legume forages such as sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) have shown promising anthelmintic properties in small ruminants but this has never been explored in cattle. Therefore, our aim was to examine the efficacy of sainfoin against cattle nematodes in vivo. METHODS: Fifteen Jersey male calves (2-4 month-old) were allocated into two groups and fed isoproteic and isoenergetic diets mainly composed of sainfoin pellets (Group SF; n = 9, three pe

Intracellular iron storage and the pathogenesis of paratuberculosis. Comparative studies with other mycobacterial, parasitic or infectious conditions of veterinary importance.

The distribution of iron and mycobacteria was examined in the intestinal tract of ruminants with naturally-occurring M. paratuberculosis infection and compared with mycobacterial infections in several species. This distribution was compared with that of iron in chronic lesions caused by other microbial or parasitic agents. In the clinical form of paratuberculosis in cattle, sheep and goats there was marked lymphangiectasis and a high proportion of the granulomatous lesions contained siderotic macrophages with a high mycobacterial content. In cattle with preclinical lesions of granulomatous ent

Transcriptional Profiling of Abomasal Mucosa from Young Calves Experimentally Infected with Ostertagia ostertagi.

Ostertagia ostertagi, also known as the brown stomach worm, causes significant pathology in the abomasum, resulting in production and nutritional losses in cattle. Alternative control measures, such as vaccination, are urgently needed because of rapidly growing anthelmintic drug resistance. There is a need to understand host responses to the infection, especially immune responses, to advance vaccine discovery and design. Therefore, the present study investigated comprehensive changes in gene transcription in the abomasal mucosa of cattle infected with O. ostertagi at 0, 3-5, 7-9, 10, and 21 da

Ostertagia ostertagi exposure in dairy cows in the alpine space: implications for region-specific assessments.

BACKGROUND: Pasture-based management of dairy cattle in temperate regions leads to infections with gastrointestinal nematodes, with Ostertagia ostertagi recognised as the most pathogenic species of these. However, little is known about O. ostertagi exposure in alpine regions. Here, we aimed to explore the O. ostertagi seropositivity in a large sample of dairy cows from two Austrian federal states that differ substantially in herd size, productivity and use of (alpine) pastures, and to assess associations between parasite exposure, milk yield, and farm management factors. METHODS: Bulk tank mi
