INTRODUCTION: Pediatric patients with perianal Crohn's Disease (CD) suffer recalcitrant fistulas, abscesses, and strictures. Fecal diversion is a palliative last resort, but the expected clinical course and long-term management of the ostomy for this population is unclear. We sought to identify factors predictive of ostomy takedown and establish management recommendations for fistulizing and stenosing disease.
METHODS: We reviewed our institutional registry for patients aged 1-18 years with CD who received perianal surgery from 2011 to 2021. We analyzed medical therapy, examinations under ane

PURPOSE: Ostomy is an important step in the treatment of patients with anorectal malformation (ARM). Sometimes this basic surgical procedure may cause a devastating complication.
METHODS: The medical reports of the patients with ARM who had ostomy in the past were inspected. How many of them were operated in this center or sent from others, the type of ARM, what type of ostomy performed and which place of the bowel used and the complication type and rate related to ostomy and ostomy closure were evaluated.
RESULTS: Nearly, 157 of 230 patients with ARM had ostomy during twenty-two years were

OBJECTIVES: To review ostomy care in colorectal cancer, current trends in assessment, management, and treatment, and the role of the enterostomal therapy (ET) nurse in cancer care.
DATA SOURCES: Published literature and the author's clinical experiences in ostomy wound care.
CONCLUSION: Care of the patient with colorectal cancer requiring an ostomy involves both physical and psychological rehabilitation. The education and skills of an ET/wound, ostomy, and continence (WOC) nurse can provide a valuable service to the patient/family, surgeon, oncology nurse, and other health care providers. IM

Fecal and urinary diversions are fairly common among patients diagnosed with abdominal and pelvic malignancies who have undergone removal of the bladder or rectum or who have suffered from obstruction caused by tumor invasion or radiation damage. Effective ostomy management is important in palliative care and involves establishment of an effective pouching system, attention to diversion-specific alterations in dietary and fluid intake, and management of peristomal and stomal complications. Management of colostomy must include measures to prevent or manage constipation, management of ileostomy

Urinary tract devices, often placed to alleviate obstruction or serve as support for surgical anastamosis, are used with increasing frequency. Although useful, they are fraught with hazards, especially infection. Infected devices have a myriad of clinical presentations that can be unrevealing or even misleading as to the underlying disease process. The astute clinician should maintain a high index of suspicion for such infections. Urinalysis alone has not been adequately studied to demonstrate that it alone can rule out infected foreign material in the urinary tract and should be followed by c

BACKGROUND: Peristomal skin complications are prevalent among patients with ostomies and significantly impact their quality of life. Ostomy care is crucial for patients with ostomies because it ensures proper adhesion and protects and reduces the peristomal skin complications.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of nail polish as a novel skin barrier and compare its performance with the commonly available ostomy barriers in the market.
DESIGN: Phase I randomized controlled trial.
SETTINGS: A single trauma and surgery center.
PATIENTS: Forty patients who were hospitalized for ostomy imp

BACKGROUND: Rectal cancer (RC) surgery often results in permanent colostomy, seriously limiting the quality of life (QOL) in patients in terms of bowel function. This study aimed to examine defecation function and QOL in RC patients who underwent non-ostomy or ostomy surgery, at different time-points after surgery.
METHODS: In total, 82 patients who underwent an ostomy and 141 who did not undergo an ostomy for the treatment of RC at our colorectal surgery department between January 2013 and January 2015 were enrolled. Surgical methods, tumor distance from the anal margin (TD), anastomosis dis

BACKGROUND: Stoma creation is a common procedure in colorectal surgery. Despite improved surgical techniques, ostomy-related wound complications may prolong the recovery period and impair health-related quality of life. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), autolytic debridement agents, and silver dressings are often used for managing complex wound infection and dehiscence. These applications have the potential to increase patient comfort and accelerate recovery.
CASE: We report our experience in a 66 year old female who had a wound dehiscence involving the ostomy after robotic abdominoperi

The deviation of feces is a very old and still largely applied technique used by general surgeons. Indications divide into elective and emergency operations. Among the elective cases, rectal carcinoma, extensive perianal fistulae and neurogenic disorders of the distal colon are the most common indications. In an emergency situation causes such as extensive peritonitis (e.g. due to anastomotic leakage) and extensive trauma to the pelvis/rectum quite often result in a stoma. All segments of the intestine, from the first loop after the ligament of Treitz down to the sigmoid colon, are feasible fo

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study was aimed to evaluate the late complications of ostomy surgery in a strictly followed patient population of a university hospital.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An actuarial analysis of the complications of 156 patients with permanent ostomies using the life-table method was performed.
RESULTS: The crude and actuarial risks of late stomal complications in 156 patients after a mean follow-up of 8 years were 39 per cent and 59 per cent. The cumulative risk of complications did not differ between the stoma types. Paracolostomy hernia was the most common complication of t

BACKGROUND: An ostomy is a surgical opening between a hollow organ and the body surface. These are necessary for several conditions, but complications may arise following ostomy creation.
OBJECTIVE: This narrative review provides emergency clinicians with a focused overview of ostomy complications.
DISCUSSION: An ostomy is a diverting measure for management of several conditions, including gastrointestinal malignancy, inflammatory bowel disease, bowel obstruction, perforation, and trauma, and in pediatric patients, other indications include bowel malformations, Hirschsprung's disease, and ne

BACKGROUND: Parastomal hernias are common and negatively affect patient's lives. We hypothesized that physical activity (or lack thereof) might be associated with the presence of parastomal hernia. If so, this might be an actionable target for prevention.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to determine rates of and risk factors for parastomal hernias in patients with a permanent ostomy.
DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort and survey study. Postal survey included questions about parastomal hernia, symptoms, lifestyle, and validated instruments to measure stoma quality of life and physical activ

An estimated 1 million North Americans live with ostomies, with up to 80% of ostomy patients developing stoma-related skin morbidities. While ostomy nurses are often the first line of management, dermatologists may be involved in the care of ostomy patients with complex or persistent peristomal skin complications. Therefore, an understanding of the ostomy apparatus and possible peristomal skin conditions that may arise allows dermatologists to identify skin complications early and work effectively with a multidisciplinary team. In this article, we aim to review the ostomy apparatus, discuss th

INTRODUCTION: The role for diverting ostomy as a method to help reduce morbidity and mortality has been well established in the combat trauma population. However, factors that influence the type of ostomy used and which ostomies become permanent are poorly studied. We examine patterns of ostomy usage and reversal in a large series of combat trauma patients.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of combat casualties treated at our continental U.S. military treatment facility from 2003 to 2015. All patients who underwent ostomy formation were included. Clinical and demographic factors we

This article reviews early postoperative complications in adults undergoing ostomy surgery. Whether the ostomy is the result of an emergent or elective procedure, the WOC nurse and staff nurses are responsible for monitoring and ensuring quality healthcare for the patient. Nevertheless, many patients undergoing ostomy surgery experience a complication during the early postoperative period. Early postoperative complications not only influence immediate postoperative care but may also impact quality of life for the person living with an ostomy. Keen assessment skills, early recognition of signs
