Otitis media with effusion (OME), a kind of inflammatory disease of the middle ear, is characterized by the retention of middle ear effusions and hearing loss. There are many factors involved in the development of OME including bacterial infection, formation of bacterial biofilms, eustachian tube dysfunction, adenoid hypertrophy, immune system disorders. Recently, some studies showed that gastroesophageal reflux has correlation with OME.

The clinical practice guideline on otitis media with effusion (OME) provides evidence-based recommendations on diagnosing and managing OME in children. This is an update of the 1994 clinical practice guideline "Otitis Media With Effusion in Young Children," which was developed by the Agency for Healthcare Policy and Research (now the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality). In contrast to the earlier guideline, which was limited to children aged 1 to 3 years with no craniofacial or neurologic abnormalities or sensory deficits, the updated guideline applies to children aged 2 months through

The etiologic factors associated with serous otitis media or otitis media with effusion (OME) are well described in children. Little has been published with regard to OME and its etiology in adults. Thirty-five adult patients who presented with OME in a referral-based otolaryngologic practice over a five-year period were studied by retrospective chart review with a follow-up telephone interview. OME in adults may be related to previous middle ear surgery in the contralateral ear, a history of middle ear disease in childhood, chronic nasal symptoms of obstruction and nasal fullness, cigarette s

Middle ear effusion was obtained from children with otitis media with effusion and separated into thick (mucoid) and thin (serous) pools. Both effusion types contained similar amounts of non-dialysable solids. However, the thick effusions contained more mucus glycoprotein than the thin effusions, 25% and 8.2% respectively. Amino acid and carbohydrate analysis of the CsCl purified mucus glycoproteins demonstrated that the glycoprotein from the thick and thin effusions differed in their protein core, those from the thick effusions possessing a higher percentage of serine and threonine, the amino

The sequential cytologic and biochemical events of middle ear effusion (MEE) were studied in experimental models of serous otitis media (SOM) and purulent otitis media (POM) in chinchilla. In the SOM model, the initial appearance of neutrophils was followed by macrophages. In the POM model, neutrophils were the predominant cells in MEE and the number of neutrophils was about 100-fold higher than in the SOM model. The activity of lysozyme in MEE was higher in POM than in SOM and correlated with the number of neutrophils and mononuclear phagocytes. The results of the present study suggest that n

BACKGROUND: Middle-ear barotrauma is a common problem reported by aircrew members and passengers. Studies have shown that 20-50% of passengers report ear complaints during the flight or after landing. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of otitis media with effusion in aircrew members and describe the time to resolution of the condition.METHODS: All aircrew members presenting at Civil Aviation Center at Congonhas Airport at São Paulo for annual flight medical examinations from September 2014 to May 2015 were reviewed retrospectively for the presence of otologic disorders. This plain language summary serves as an overview in explaining otitis media with effusion (pronounced Oh-TIE-tis ME-dee-uh with Ef-YOO-zhun), abbreviated "OME" and often called "ear fluid." The summary applies to children aged 2 months through 12 years with OME and is based on the 2015 "Clinical Practice Guideline: Otitis Media with Effusion (Update)." The evidence-based guideline includes research to support more effective diagnosis and treatment of OME in children. The guideline was developed as a quality improvement opportunity for managing OME by creating clear recommendations to use in m

Samples of middle ear effusions from 102 children with serous and mucoid otitis media were cultured for mycoplasmas and bacteria. No sample yielded mycoplasmas but bacteria were cultured from 48 (47 per cent). Organisms commonly regarded as pathogens were present in 25 samples (Haemophilus influenzae 17, Streptococcus pneumoniae four, other streptococci four). The only sample from which anaerobic bacteria were isolated was from a patient with cholesteatoma.

The incidence, prevalence, and natural history of otitis media with effusion (OME) and middle ear high negative pressure (HNP) were investigated in a group of 2 to 6 year old preschool children. The children were examined monthly over a two year period from September 1981 to August 1983. The middle ear status was assessed using a decision-tree algorithm which combined the findings of pneumatic otoscopy, tympanometry, and acoustic reflex measurements. Fifty-three percent of the children in the first year and 61% in the second year developed OME; also during the two years, HNP was documented in

Chronic otitis media with effusion ('secretory') is one of the most common diseases of childhood. Pathogenesis related to Eustachian tube dysfunction. Bacteria have been isolated from approximately 50 percent of chronic middle ear effusions. Diagnosis by pneumatic otoscopy or tympanometry, or both. Efficacy yet to be shown for antimicrobial therapy, decongestants, antihistamines, hydrocortisone, myringotomy with or without tympanostomy tubes, and adenoidectomy with or without tonsillectomy. However, a 10-day trial with an antimicrobial agent, such as amoxicillin (erythromycin and sulfonamide,

BACKGROUND: The etiology of otitis media with effusion (OME) is unclear. Although the majority of effusions show inflammation, culture methods yield positive results for bacteria in only 20 to 30% of cases.
METHODS: The polymerase chain reaction was used for detection of three upper respiratory tract pathogens, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Streptococcus pneumoniae, and a fairly recently described bacterium, Alloiococcus otitis (A. otitidis), that is solely found in OME. The study included 67 middle ear effusions that were collected from 48 pediatric OME patients during ve

HYPOTHESIS AND AIMS: The specific aims of the research are to determine whether newborn ears with persistent middle ear effusion at age 30 to 48 hours are more likely to develop chronic otitis media with effusion over the first year of life when compared with ears without persistent middle ear effusion. The hypothesis is that neonates with middle ear effusion persisting to 30 to 48 hours are more likely to develop chronic otitis media with effusion.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, case-control design. Loupe-magnified pneumatic otoscopy performed at the time of newborn hearing screening determined

Tornwaldt cyst is a relatively rare lesion that is found in the posterior wall of the nasopharynx. It occurs in the midline bursa of the nasopharynx and represents a persistent communication between the roof of the nasopharynx and the notochordal remnants. Smaller cysts are usually asymptomatic; cysts exceeding a diameter of 1 to 2 cm may be symptomatic. Magnetic resonance imaging is the best imaging modality for diagnosing Tornwaldt cyst. We present a rare case of a huge Tornwaldt cyst completely obstructing the nasopharyngeal airway.

The present study aimed to investigate the incidence and patterns of nystagmus in adult patients with acute otitis media (AOM) or otitis media with effusion (OME) without dizziness or vertigo, and discuss possible mechanisms. From February 2018 to November 2018, 34 consecutive patients with AOM or OME without dizziness were included. Nystagmus was examined with video Frenzel glasses. Of 34 adult AOM or OME patients without dizziness, nystagmus was observed in 28 patients (82%). In unilateral AOM or OME (n = 30), the most commonly observed nystagmus pattern was irritative-type direction-fixed n

OBJECTIVES: To gather and analyse information from the literature concerning the management of otitis media with effusion in adults.
METHODS: A review of the English-language literature from 1970 to the present.
RESULTS: Ventilation tubes have been the standard treatment for otitis media with effusion in adults, but examination of the results of published studies shows that they are associated with disappointing outcomes and significant complications, notably intermittent or chronic discharge, particularly in cases associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Balloon dilatation of the Eustachia

Otitis media with effusion has been the subject of a number of recent studies. It was first recognised during the second half of the 19th century, when Adam Politzer (1835-1920) of Vienna was one of the leading otologists of this period and a founding father of the specialty. He had emphasised in his textbook the importance of tympanoscopy, which had led to the recognition of what was then known as 'catarrh of the middle ear' as a clinical entity. Politzer's original illustrations and concise accounts give a clear image of the contemporary state of knowledge of the condition and its treatment,

OBJECTIVE: This update of a 2004 guideline codeveloped by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of Family Physicians, provides evidence-based recommendations to manage otitis media with effusion (OME), defined as the presence of fluid in the middle ear without signs or symptoms of acute ear infection. Changes from the prior guideline include consumer advocates added to the update group, evidence from 4 new clinical practice guidelines, 20 new systematic reviews, and 49 randomized control trials, enh

CONCLUSIONS: The high oxidant levels in chronic otitis media with effusion (OME) observed in our research and the improvement seen in children with chronic OME after antioxidant treatment suggest that oxygen-derived free radicals play an important role in chronic OME.
OBJECTIVES: OME is a common pathologic condition characterized by nonpurulent fluid in the middle ear (ME) that leads to moderate conductive hearing loss and flat tympanogram. During OME inflammatory cells generate large amounts of superoxide radicals to improve bactericidal activity. Overproduction of oxygen-derived free radica
