Lingual morphology of domesticated Asian small-clawed otters in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

This study aimed to observe the lingual morphology of the domesticated Asian small-clawed otter, Aonyx cinereus (A. cinereus), from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Six domesticated A. cinereus adults were obtained from a local otter breeder in Yogyakarta, with no regard to sex. The animals were acclimated to the laboratory for one day, following this, the animals underwent macroscopy identification and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM) analysis. Macroscopically, the tongue of domesticated A. cinereus is divided into three parts: the apex, corpus, and radix. The apex is the sh

Leptospirosis in Northern Sea Otters (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) from Washington, USA.

We diagnosed leptospirosis in six northern sea otters (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) that stranded on beaches in Washington State, US in 2002. Significant gross findings included cyanotic oral mucous membranes, renal swelling, congestion or pale streaks on the cut surface of renal lobules, hematuria, dehydration, lymphadenopathy, pulmonary congestion, and rarely adrenal hemorrhage and congestion. Histopathology showed lymphoplasmacytic tubulointerstitial nephritis with intraluminal spirochetes and immunoreactivity to leptospiral antigens in the renal tubules and interstitium. A quantitative polymera

Morbidity and mortality of Asian small-clawed otters (Aonyx cinereus) and North American river otters (Lontra canadensis) in US zoos and aquaria from 2000 to 2020: A survey of lesions in 2 popular otter species.

Asian small-clawed otters (Aonyx cinereus, ASCOs) and North American river otters (Lontra canadensis, NAROs) are commonly housed at zoos and aquaria in the United States. The few reports of diseases in these species have mainly focused on free-ranging populations and do not represent otters in managed care. Necropsy reports from 93 individuals, 71 ASCO and 22 NARO, that died or were euthanized between 2000 and 2020 from 10 separate institutions were evaluated, including 47 females, 45 males, and 1 unreported sex. All otters with known ages ranged between 2 months and 21 years of age (median =

SARCOCYSTIS INFECTIONS IN RIVER OTTER (LONTRA CANADENSIS) IN MICHIGAN.

Sarcocystis infections are common in the muscles of herbivores but were, until recently, considered relatively rare in carnivores. Little is known of sarcocysts in the muscles of river otters in the United States. In a previous epidemiologic study of Toxoplasma gondii infections in North American river otters (Lontra canadensis) from Michigan in the 2018 and 2019 harvest season, Sarcocystis DNA was found in 34 (27.4%) of 124 otter muscles. Tongues from these 34 PCR-positive samples were further examined here for Sarcocystis species. An additional batch of frozen 62 samples collected at the end

Response of Eurasian otters (Lutra lutra) to underwater acoustic harassment device sounds.

Seal scarers (or acoustic harassment devices, AHDs) are designed to deter seals from fishing gear and aquaculture operations, as well as to prevent seals from entering rivers to avoid predation on valuable fish. Our study investigated the potential effects of AHDs on non-target species, specifically the Eurasian otters (Lutra lutra), by testing the reaction of two rehabilitated otters to simulated AHDs sounds at 1 and 14 kHz, with a received sound intensity of 105-145 dB re 1 µPa rms. The 1 kHz sounds were used to investigate alternative frequencies for scaring seals without scaring otters. Th

Sonographic features of abdominal organs in healthy captive Neotropical otters (Lontra longicaudis).

This study aimed to assess the sonographic features of abdominal organs in healthy captive Neotropical otters (Lontra longicaudis). The sonograph showed that the urinary bladder was located in the caudal abdomen and its content was uniformly anechoic. The bladder wall had three layers: outer hyperechoic serosa, hypoechoic muscular layer and hyperechoic mucosa. The mean total wall thickness was 0.10 cm. The splenic parenchyma had a homogeneous echotexture with greater echogenicity than that of the left renal cortex and liver. The borders were regular and tapered. Rugal folds were observed in th

Osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint in southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis).

Museum skull specimens (n = 1,008) of southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) were examined macroscopically according to defined criteria for the presence, severity and characteristics of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA). The specimens were from stranded young adult to adult animals. Overall, 4.1% of the specimens had findings consistent with TMJ-OA. Of these, 61.0% were from females and 39.0% were from males. In addition, 85.4% of the affected specimens were from adults and 14.6% were from young adults. However, there was no significant association between age and sex with

Vitamin A deficiency and hepatic retinol levels in sea otters, Enhydra lutris.

Vitamin A deficiency has rarely been reported in captive or free-ranging wildlife species. Necropsy findings in two captively housed southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) included irregular thickening of the calvaria characterized by diffuse hyperostoses on the internal surface. One animal also had moderate squamous metaplasia of the seromucinous glands of the nose. There was no measurable retinol in the liver of either sea otter. For comparison, hepatic retinol concentration was determined for 23 deceased free-ranging southern and northern (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) sea otters from Califo

Isolation of Brucella species from cetaceans, seals and an otter.

Brucella organisms which differed from the recognised species of the genus, were isolated from nine seals, eight cetaceans and one otter. A method is described for the isolation of Brucella species from sea mammals and the first isolations of Brucella species are recorded from an Atlantic white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus), two striped dolphins (Stenella coeuleoalba), a hooded seal (Cystophora cristata), a grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) and a European otter (Lutra lutra). There were differences in the culture media required for the primary isolation of the organisms and in their depen

Traces elements in feces of Eurasian otters from the mountain stream Javorinka (Slovakia).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentrations of elements and heavy metals (Hg, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Se, Rb, Sr, Zr, Mo, Sb, Ba, and Pb) in fecal samples of the river otter (Lutra lutra) which inhabits the Javorinka mountain stream in the High Tatras, part of the Western Carpathians in Slovakia. Javorinka serves as a model stream with minimal human impact. As a predator, the otter is a suitable bioindicator of the environment it inhabits. Elements and heavy metals were analyzed using the energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) technique due to its simple sa

SERUM ANTIBODY RESPONSE TO RABIES VACCINATION IN NORTHERN SEA OTTERS (ENYDRA LUTRIS KENYONI).

While rabies has not been reported in northern sea otters (Enydra lutris kenyoni), it is an infection with severe implications. The World Organization for Animal Health considers a serum titer of at least 0.5 IU/ml as adequate when importing vaccinated domesticated animals into rabies-free areas, a standard often used for zoological species. A few facilities have vaccinated sea otters against rabies, but titers were not analyzed. Production of serum neutralizing antibodies to rabies was evaluated following vaccination of 15 northern sea otters from the Alaska SeaLife Center and the Minnesota Z

Brucella Infection in Asian Sea Otters (Enhydra lutris lutris) on Bering Island, Russia.

Infection with Brucella spp., long known as a cause of abortion, infertility, and reproductive loss in domestic livestock, has increasingly been documented in marine mammals over the past two decades. We report molecular evidence of Brucella infection in Asian sea otters (Enhydra lutris lutris). Brucella DNA was detected in 3 of 78 (4%) rectal swab samples collected between 2004 and 2006 on Bering Island, Russia. These 78 animals had previously been documented to have a Brucella seroprevalence of 28%, markedly higher than the prevalence documented in sea otters (Enhydra lutris) in North Americ

Bartonella spp. exposure in northern and southern sea otters in Alaska and California.

Since 2002, an increased number of northern sea otters (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) from southcentral Alaska have been reported to be dying due to endocarditis and/or septicemia with infection by Streptococcus infantarius subsp. coli. Bartonella spp. DNA was also detected in northern sea otters as part of mortality investigations during this unusual mortality event (UME) in Kachemak Bay, Alaska. To evaluate the extent of exposure to Bartonella spp. in sea otters, sera collected from necropsied and live-captured northern sea otters, as well as necropsied southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis)

Total mercury and methylmercury residues in river otters (Lutra canadensis) from Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) collected trapper-caught river otter (Lutra canadensis) from 3 distinct areas of Wisconsin (north, central, and south). Otter carcasses were collected from a total of 12 counties during the trapping seasons of 2003 and 2004. Liver, kidney, muscle, brain, and fur tissue was collected for mercury (Hg) analysis. Analysis of variance identified collection zone as the significant factor for differences in tissue Hg levels, with a pattern of decreasing Hg concentrations from north to south (p < 0.0001). This trend was apparent in all tissue types

Pathological changes and organochlorine residues in tissues of wild otters (Lutra lutra).

In 1984 two adult, wild otters (Lutra lutra) from north Norfolk were subjected to full post mortem examinations. One was found dead and the other sick. Both were thin. No evidence of infectious disease was found, but there were organochlorine concentrations of 433 and 75 mg/kg of fat (69 per cent polychlorinated biphenyls in both) in skeletal muscle. Leiomyoma of the reproductive tract and adrenocortical hyperplasia in one otter were similar to age associated changes in other mammals. Integumentary, including pedal, lesions were present in both otters. The possibility that the pedal lesions we

Metastatic exocrine pancreatic adenocarcinoma in a giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis).

Neoplasms of the exocrine pancreas are uncommon in domestic animals and rarely occur in wildlife. This article describes the clinical and pathological findings of one case of metastatic exocrine pancreatic adenocarcinoma in an 18-year-old giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) in captivity with a history of inappetence and apathy. Abdominal ultrasonography was inconclusive, and tomography revealed a neoplasm affecting the urinary bladder and hydroureter. During the anaesthesia recovery, the animal presented a cardiorespiratory arrest and died. Grossly, there were neoplastic nodules in the pancre

Thymic Hematoma Found in a Wild Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra).

Thymic hematomas are uncommon in animals, and the few reported cases are all in dogs. In May 2019, we necropsied a wild Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) in Junju, Republic of Korea, and found a thymic hematoma without any signs of trauma or hemorrhage in other organs, except for a hemothorax. This study describes the macroscopic and microscopic examinations of a thymic hematoma in an Eurasian otter.

Disseminated pheochromocytoma in a North American river otter (Lontra canadensis).

A 21-yr-old male North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) with a chronic history of degenerative osteoarthritis was evaluated for acute posterior paralysis. Because no definitive cause was identified and a poor prognosis was expected, the otter was euthanatized. A malignant neoplasm of adrenal gland origin with disseminated metastases to the central nervous system, lymph nodes, diaphragm, pancreas, spleen, and liver was diagnosed on postmortem examination. No clinical signs of disseminated neoplasia had been noted throughout the otter's history. The adrenal neoplasm was composed of nests

Human North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) attack.

As a result of the successful restoration and conservation programs deployed by state and federal agencies, populations of the North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) are increasing in many states. Recreational activities such as swimming, boating, and fishing increase the likelihood of human interactions with this charismatic, nonendangered mustelid. Otters tend to avoid areas of high human activity, occur at low population densities, and in some habitats in the United States have not recovered from population declines. Therefore, interactions with humans are rare, and aggressive encou

Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra), a definitive host for Dirofilaria immitis.

A mature male and a mature female Dirofilaria immitis were found in the right ventricle of the heart of a naturally infected 2-yr-old male Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) that had died of severe lung congestion at a zoo in South Korea. Both developing embryos and microfilariae were present in the uterus of the female D. immitis.
