Hospital anxiety and depression scale. A quantitative analysis in medical outpatients, psychiatric outpatients and normal subjects.

Depressive and anxiety symptomatology represent the most common psychiatric manifestations that complicate the management and prognosis of patients with somatic disorders. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) is a reliable, valid andpractical screening tool for identifying and quantifying anxiety and/or depression in non-psychiatric out patients. The aim of the present study was to compare the psychometric properties of the HADS among internal medicine outpatients, psychiatric outpatients and the generalpopulation. The present study involved 264 subjects: 95 internal medicine outpa

Concomitant Psychiatric Symptoms in Neurological Outpatients.

To estimate the prevalence of concomitant psychiatric disorders in neurological outpatients and to assess the value of simple screening questionnaires in the identification of psychiatric symptoms, we analyzed a total of 803 patients who visited neurology clinics with neurological symptoms over a six-month period. Using self-reported questionnaires, we assessed psychiatric symptoms, such as stress (Perceived Stress Scale, PSS), depression (Patient Health Question 9, PHQ9), and anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7, GAD7). According to the disease subtypes, we analyzed the psychiatric scales

Pathological gamblers: inpatients' versus outpatients' characteristics.

Several researchers and clinicians have questioned the advantages and disadvantages of inpatient and outpatient treatment for people suffering from pathological gambling. This study compares the characteristics of pathological gamblers seeking inpatient and outpatient treatment. A total of 233 pathological gamblers (inpatients = 134, outpatients = 99) participated in the study. Results show that inpatients have more severe gambling problems than those receiving outpatient services. Similar results were obtained on most other related variables such as anxiety, depression, alcohol consumption, a

Advances in airway management for outpatients.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: As outpatient anaesthesia increases in volume so does research, especially in ways to reduce morbidity from relatively minor complications such as sore throat and hoarseness, as well as aiming to reduce costs and length of hospital stay. The past year has produced many studies in which newer airway devices have been compared with the laryngeal mask airway and this review evaluates them all. RECENT FINDINGS: The relatively recent introduction of the ProSeal laryngeal mask airway shows promise when insertion of a gastric tube is preferred in patients breathing spontaneously,

Command hallucinations in outpatients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The presence of command hallucinations in individuals with schizophrenia may result in an increase in clinical monitoring to reduce the perceived risk of violent behavior. However, the issue of whether command hallucinations hold any clinical relevance in relatively stable outpatient samples has not been established. METHOD: The clinical and research records of individuals with schizophrenia who participated in outpatient research protocols at the University of California, San Diego were reviewed for the presence of command hallucinations. Screening CMHC outpatients for physical illness.

To assess the prevalence of physical disorders among outpatients treated in Colorado's public mental health system, a total of 175 patients from two community mental health centers received a comprehensive medical screening that included a standard physical examination and laboratory analyses. Of these patients, 46 percent had physical conditions or laboratory test results warranting further medical evaluation. A previously undiagnosed physical health problem was identified in 20 percent of the screened patients, and about 16 percent had conditions that could cause or exacerbate their mental d

Adverse drug reactions in paediatric outpatients.

In accordance with guidelines for a multicentre trial, the incidence and features of adverse drug reactions in a sample of 1327 children attending outpatient consultations have been determined. The incidence was of 0.75% (0.34% - 1.58% with p less than 0.05). The reactions were slight in character and predominantly affected very young female patients. Antibiotics were involved in almost a half of cases, and polypharmacy was used in all of them.

Chronic vulvar pain in gynecological outpatients.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic vulvar pain (CVP) is pain in the vulvar area exceeding three months of duration. Previous studies have reported a prevalence of 7-8% in the general population and observed an association between CVP and other chronic pain, affective disorders and early life stressors. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of CVP among gynecological outpatients and to explore its association with child sexual abuse, comorbid fibromyalgia and mental health. METHODS: We conducted a questionnaire-based cross-sectional study among consecutive women attending an unselected general

[Statistical study of outpatients with hematuria].

The records of 2,545 outpatients who visited our clinic from January, 1983 to September, 1984, were reviewed retrospectively. Gross hematuria was recognized during the clinical course in 341 patients, and microscopic hematuria, in 873 patients. The patients who experienced hematuria included 701 males and 513 females. The most common causes of hematuria were UTIs (53.0%), urinary tract calculi (15.6%), and malignant tumors (7.1%). Patients with malignancies tended to develop gross hematuria rather than microscopic hematuria; moreover gross hematuria caused by a malignancy was seen more commonl

Determinants of compliance in epileptic outpatients.

The authors have investigated reasons for medication compliance in a population of epileptic patients. The hypothesis that the health care belief model would be predictive of medication-taking behavior was validated. A pilot study was constructed which investigated the comparative responses of compliant and noncompliant epileptic outpatients to questions regarding demographic, clinical history, and attitudinal characteristics. Noncompliant patients were characterized as having a longer duration of epilepsy, more complicated dosage regimens, and more changes in medication. In addition, noncompl

Chlamydia trachomatis cervicitis in gynecologic outpatients.

Symptoms suggestive of a lower genital tract infection (LGTI) are common complaints in women who consult gynecologists. Sexually transmitted microorganisms, such as Chlamydia trachomatis. Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Trichomonas vaginalis, are responsible for a substantial proportion of LGTI. This study was performed to establish the frequency of LGTI caused by C trachomatis in women attending a gynecologic outpatient clinic. Of 170 women with LGTI, 32.9% harbored one or more of these organisms: C trachomatis was found in 19.3%, N gonorrhoeae in 4.7%, and T vaginalis in 25.9%. The results of the
