Functional ovarian cysts in patients cured of ovarian neoplasms.

Twenty-seven patients with ovarian cancer underwent unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and were followed for 12-215 months (mean 80) after completion of therapy. Of these, nine patients who received pelvic irradiation subsequently developed ovarian failure. Of the remaining 18 patients who maintained ovarian function, 13 (72%) developed a functional ovarian cyst during the follow-up period. Of these 13 patients, eight were observed until the functional cyst regressed, four were treated with oral contraceptives (OCs) to suppress ovarian function, and one underwent oophorectomy for a large corpus

Ovarian Cysts and Tumors in Adolescents.

This article aims to provide a multidisciplinary approach to ovarian/adnexal lesions in young patients. Functional cysts, torsions, benign tumors, and malignancies occur within the ovaries of children and adolescents at varying frequencies. Careful conservative management, based on the ultrasonographic sign of presence of normal ovarian tissue, in most circumstances can lead to appropriate ovarian-preserving treatments. The symptomatic ovarian cyst is often due to complications such as hemorrhage and ovarian torsion. Ovarian torsion represents surgical emergency, and a high index of clinical s

Oral contraceptives for functional ovarian cysts.

BACKGROUND: Functional ovarian cysts are a common gynecological problem among women of reproductive age worldwide. When large, persistent, or painful, these cysts may require operations, sometimes resulting in removal of the ovary. Since early oral contraceptives were associated with a reduced incidence of functional ovarian cysts, many clinicians inferred that birth control pills could be used to treat cysts as well. This became a common clinical practice in the early 1970s. OBJECTIVES: This review examined all randomized controlled trials that studied oral contraceptives as therapy for func

Surgical treatment of neonatal ovarian cysts.

Medical experts are still at issue over the most suitable management of simple neonatal ovarian cysts exceeding 40mm and complex cysts of any size. The authors present surgical treatment of these cysts by classical laparotomy and laparoscopy. The study included 13 newborn babies surgically treated for 6 simple and 7 complex ovarian cysts. The diameter of the cysts ranged from 29 to 102mm. The age of children was from 2 days to 10 months. The open classical laparotomic approach was performed in 8 babies. In the laparotomy group, cystectomy was done in 3 infants with simple cysts. The other 5, p

Fetal goiter and bilateral ovarian cysts.

A unique case of fetal goiter accompanied by bilateral ovarian cysts in a mother treated with methimazole for Graves'disease is reported. The abnormal findings were detected by ultrasound at 31 weeks of gestation. Umbilical fetal blood sampling revealed elevated serum TSH, normal concentrations of free T 4 , normal FSH and LH and high concentrations of E 2 . A series of weekly amniocenteses and intra-amniotic injections of levothyroxine was initiated, along with a reduction of the mother's methimazole dosage. The level of TSH in amniotic fluid was initially high, but was considerably reduced b

Immunohistochemical evaluation of canine ovarian cysts.

To clarify the immunohistochemical characteristics of canine ovarian cysts, 109 canine ovarian cysts (57 cysts of subsurface epithelial structures: SES, 26 graafian follicle cysts, 12 cystic rete ovarii and 14 cysts difficult to classify morphologically) were examined regarding their lining cells immunohistochemically using antibodies against placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP), S100, inhibin alpha, desmin and AE1/AE3. Both cysts of SES and cystic rete ovarii had a positive immunoreaction to desmin and AE1/AE3, whereas all cysts all but graafian follicle cysts were negative for inhibin alpha

Ovarian cysts in infants and children.

The etiology of ovarian cysts varies with the developmental stage and hormonal milieu of the patient. In general, most ovarian cysts are functional in nature and usually resolve without treatment. Treatment is indicated if the diagnosis is in question, the cyst persists, or the patient is symptomatic. Laparoscopy has become the approach favored by most pediatric surgeons for the treatment of ovarian cysts. All surgical procedures for ovarian cysts should spare functional ovary as much as is technically possible. Simple cysts should be fenestrated. Complex or functional cysts should be excised,

The management of fetal ovarian cysts.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Ovarian torsion causing the loss of an ovary represents the most common complication of fetal ovarian cysts and occurs more frequently before than after birth. Thus, treatment of fetal simple ovarian cysts should be performed antenatally; however, criteria for prenatal decompression still need to be evaluated. Previous experience of the authors showed that large simple cysts have a poor outcome, whereas preliminary attempts of their "in utero" aspiration were all successful and uneventful. The authors evaluated the outcome of fetal simple ovarian cysts after prenatal aspira

Surgical indications for neonatal ovarian cysts.

Ante- or neonatal ovarian cysts can be often diagnosed by routine ultrasonography. Small simple ovarian cysts, which can be followed with serial ultrasonography, usually resolve spontaneously. Large simple cysts and complicated cysts should undergo surgical treatment to reduce the potential for serious complications. Seventeen ovarian cysts were experienced between 1983 and 1997. Sixteen cases underwent surgical treatment at less than 1 month of age according to our protocols. In this report, we reviewed these cases for clinical presentation, ultrasound data, management, intraoperative finding

[Treatment of ovarian cysts by laparoscopy].

OBJECTIVE: to define limits, risks and results in the long term of laparoscopic treatment of ovarian tumors. METHOD: retrospective study of adnexal tumors managed initially by laparoscopy from January 1986 to December 1992, among which 9 cancers, 25 borderline tumors, and 769 benign lesions. The ultrasonographic appearance was known for 698 of 803 lesions. 86 patients were postmenopausal (92 lesions). RESULTS: we treated 191 functional cysts, 160 serous cystadenomas, 178 endometriomas, 105 dermoid cysts, 39 mucinous cystadenomas and 96 miscellaneous lesions among which fibrothecomas, paraadn

Neonatal ovarian cysts: sonographic-pathologic correlation.

The authors reviewed the prenatal (11 infants) and postnatal (17 infants) sonograms and the clinical, surgical, and pathologic findings in 17 infants with an ovarian cyst to determine the sonographic features and natural history of neonatal ovarian cysts. An uncomplicated cyst (nontwisted, nonhemorrhagic) was completely anechoic and the cyst wall was imperceptible with sonography (five cases). A twisted or hemorrhagic cyst was cystic with a fluid-debris level, cystic with a retracting clot, septated with or without internal echoes, or solid (12 cases). These complicated cysts contained liquid

Transient sexual precocity and ovarian cysts.

Nine girls presenting under the age of 7 years with unsustained sexual precocity are described. Large ovarian cysts were detected by ultrasound in three and laparotomy in one. In two girls the symptoms resolved after surgical removal of the cyst; the other seven had spontaneous remission of symptoms, but in two of these transient breast development and bleeding recurred: further ovarian cyst formation was found in one of these patients. Endocrine studies performed before resolution of the cysts showed raised plasma oestradiol concentrations (64 to 440 pmol/l) in three girls and no appreciable

A curious case of ovarian cysts.

Benign mature cystic teratomas are a form of ovarian germ cell tumor that originates from primordial germ cells in the ovaries. Of the three types of teratoma neoplasms, benign mature cystic teratomas (also called dermoid cysts) are the most common. Patients may present with intermittent abdominal or pelvic pain, abdominal enlargement, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, or may be asymptomatic. Clinicians should have a high suspicion for benign mature cystic teratomas, which account for more than 20% of all ovarian neoplasms. This article focuses on the clinical symptoms, ovarian growth characteristics

Ovarian cysts and cancer in pregnancy.

Adnexal masses are diagnosed in 5% pregnancies and pose diagnostic and management challenges. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are the mainstay as an evaluation procedure; surgery is warranted for persistent masses with a diameter of >5 cm and sonographic signs of possible malignancy. Optimal timing for a planned surgery is the second trimester and does not adversely affect neonatal outcome. Laparoscopy is safe in pregnancy. Management for ovarian cancer during pregnancy should be individualised and formulated by a multidisciplinary team in a specialised centre while also consid
