Enhancing the reading fluency and comprehension of children with reading disabilities in an orthographically transparent language.

Breznitz (2006) demonstrated that Hebrew-speaking adults with reading disabilities benefited from a training in which reading rate was experimentally manipulated. In the present study, the authors examine whether silent reading training enhances the sentence reading rate and comprehension of children with reading disabilities and whether results found in Hebrew equally apply to an orthographically transparent language. Training results of 59 Dutch children with reading disabilities and normally achieving children show that children with reading disabilities are able to increase their sentence

Thalamic astasia: inability to stand after unilateral thalamic lesions.

Inability to stand in the absence of motor weakness or marked sensory loss is usually considered to reflect midline cerebellar disease. However, the 15 patients reported here had astasia related to unilateral thalamic lesions, documented by autopsy and computed tomography in 2 patients and by computed tomography in 13. The lesions, including infarction (6), hemorrhage (7), and tumor (2), involved primarily the superoposterolateral portion of the thalamus, but spared the rubral region. Alert, with normal or near-normal strength on isometric muscle testing and a variable degree of sensory loss,

Neuropsychologic impairment in astrocytoma survivors.

Thirteen patients selected for long-term survival with primary astrocytic tumor (who failed to return to premorbid educational or vocational levels) were examined by neuropsychologic tests of specific and generalized higher cortical functions. In the absence of tumor regrowth or other neurologic disorders, each demonstrated difficulty in problem solving or coping with novel situations when previously acquired abilities, overlearned material, and psychometric intelligence appeared consistent with their premorbid level. The diffuse difficulties were unrelated to tumor type or location, and were

Error monitoring is altered in musician's dystonia: evidence from ERP-based studies.

Musician's dystonia (MD) is a task-specific movement disorder characterized by a loss of voluntary motor control in highly trained movements like piano playing. Its underlying pathophysiology is defined by deficient functioning of neural pathways at different levels of the central nervous system. However, a few studies have examined the brain responses associated with executive functions such as error monitoring in MD. We recorded the electroencephalogram (EEG) in professional pianists during the performance of memorized music sequences at fast tempi. Event-related potentials (ERPs) locked to

The indirect effect of panic disorder on smoking cognitions via difficulties in emotion regulation.

Panic disorder (PD) and cigarette smoking are highly comorbid and associated with worse panic and smoking outcomes. Smoking may become an overlearned automatized response to relieve panic-like withdrawal distress, leading to corresponding smoking cognitions, which contribute to its reinforcing properties and difficultly abstaining. Difficulties in emotion regulation (ER) may underlie this relation such that in the absence of adaptive emotion regulatory strategies, smokers with PD may more readily rely upon smoking to manage affective distress. In the current study, the indirect relation betwee

Lateral asymmetry in perceptual judgments of reading disabled, hyperactive and control children.

Three groups of 11 year old boys, classified as reading-disabled/hyperactive, hyperactive, and normal controls, made same-different judgments to pairs of verbal or visuospatial stimuli presented simultaneously to the right or left side of a fixation point. Two experimental paradigms were used, one emphasizing comparison judgments from memory, the other, new comparison judgments. Reading-disabled boys made more errors of judgment than did controls. All subjects exhibited faster reaction times for different judgments of pairs appearing in the left visual field. Reaction times were longer and err

Failure of cathodal direct current stimulation to improve fine motor control in musician's dystonia.

Musician's dystonia (MD) is a task-specific movement disorder with a loss of voluntary motor control in highly trained movements. Defective inhibition on different levels of the central nervous system is involved in its pathophysiology. Cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (ctDCS) diminishes excitability of the motor cortex and improves performance in overlearned tasks in healthy subjects. The aim of this study was to investigate whether ctDCS improves fine motor control in MD. Professional guitarists (n = 10) with MD played exercises before, directly after ctDCS, and 60 min after

Impact of red blood cell transfusion timing and volume on biopsy-proven rejection: a single-center cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative red blood cell transfusion (RBCT) and immunosuppressive therapy are critical factors influencing the risk of kidney transplantation (KT) rejection. In this study, we examined how RBCT volume, timing, and immunosuppressive therapy affect biopsy-proven rejection (BPR). METHODS: We analyzed 170 living donor KT recipients, assessing RBCT timing, volume, immunosuppressive therapy, and recipient characteristics. RBCT timing was classified as none, within 1 month, or over 1 month post-KT. Random forest and SHapley Additive explanation (SHAP) were used to identify risk facto

Praxis and the right hemisphere.

We report our observations on praxis in a strongly right-handed man following a massive stroke that resulted in virtually complete destruction of the left cerebral hemisphere. Our patient was severely impaired in pantomiming transitive gestures with the left hand and in reproducing novel non-symbolic hand and arm movement sequences. However, overlearned habitual actions like actual object use and intransitive gestures were relatively spared. Performance of axial commands was intact. Gesture recognition and discrimination were also preserved. Based on these findings, we propose that the praxis

Effect of stimulus intensity and number of treatments on ECS-related seizure duration and retrograde amnesia in rats.

BACKGROUND: Animal models are frequently used to generate and test hypotheses about amnesia resulting from electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Although many predictors of ECT-induced amnesia are known, their relative effects have been inadequately researched in the context of the animal models. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the relative retrograde amnestic effects of electroconvulsive shock (ECS) stimulus intensity (dose) and number on strong memories in rats. We also sought to identify dose-dependent ceiling amnestic effects, if any. METHODS: Adult rats (n = 144) were overtrained in a pass

Word learning deficit among Chinese dyslexic children.

The present study examined word learning difficulties in Chinese dyslexic children, readers of a nonalphabetic script. A total of 105 Hong Kong Chinese children were recruited and divided into three groups: Dyslexic (mean age 8;8), CA control (mean age 8;9), and RL control (mean age 6; 11). They were given a word learning task and a familiar word writing task. It was found that the Dyslexic group performed less well than the RL group in learning irregular words over trials but not the regular ones. Error analyses showed that the Dyslexic group made more orthographic and word association errors

Role of the human motor cortex in rapid motor learning.

Recent studies suggest that the human primary motor cortex (M1) is involved in motor learning, but the nature of that involvement is not clear. Here, learning-related changes in M1 excitability were studied with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) while na subjects practiced either a ballistic or a ramp pinch task to the 0.5-Hz beat of a metronome. Subjects rapidly learned to optimize ballistic contractions as indicated by a significant increase in peak pinch acceleration and peak force after the 60-min practice epoch. The increase in force and acceleration was associated with an increase

Automatic Detection of Sinus Membrane Thickness Using a Hybrid Deep Learning Model Integrating Multiple Attention Mechanisms.

Background/Objectives: In dental implant surgeries, automatic detection and classification of maxillary sinus membrane thickening from Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images used for diagnosis and treatment planning, using an artificial intelligence-based system, will both reduce specialists' error rates and enable faster processing. Therefore, in this study, a unique model was developed to automatically detect maxillary sinus membrane thickening from CBCT images. Methods: The first step of the developed model is data preprocessing. Then, feature extraction is performed using the backbone

Time required for judgments of numerical inequality: Revisiting symbolic estrangement.

Whether the meaning of symbolic numerals is represented by the approximate number system (ANS) is a subject of long-standing interest, with contradictory results reported across educated adults and developing children. To resolve past discrepancies, we investigated the time required to make judgments of numerical inequality across an expansive numerical spectrum (1-999) and range of ratios (1.125-4.5) in 217 children (ages 4-12) and 66 adults. Testing an experience-dependent framework, Study 1 evaluated whether the relative fluency of symbolic and non-symbolic processing changes with age accor

Retrograde amnesia: a study of its relation to anterograde amnesia and semantic memory deficits.

This group study of 24 amnesic patients and 40 control subjects examined the hypothesis that retrograde memory deficits result from a combination of two impairment mechanisms: (1) a deficit in the retrieval of contents that is related to dysfunctioning of the hippocampal anterograde memory system, and (2) a deficit in the storage and/or retrieval of contents that is related to concomitant neocortical lesions. Retrograde amnesia was evaluated with the use of new Famous Persons and Autobiographical Memory Tests. The postulated components of retrograde memory impairment were assessed using the We

Basic number processing deficits in ADHD: a broad examination of elementary and complex number processing skills in 9- to 12-year-old children with ADHD-C.

ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) and academic difficulties are frequently associated, but to date this link is poorly understood. In order to explore which components of number processing and calculation skills may be disturbed in children with ADHD we presented a series of respective tasks to 9- to 12-year-old children with ADHD-combined type and matched children without ADHD (of any type) without concomitant dyscalculia and/or dyslexia. Overall, group differences were not significant regarding overlearned and explicitly trained simple and complex calculation skills. More basic

Tapping, grasping and aiming in ideomotor apraxia.

Very few studies have investigated sensorimotor control in apraxia using tasks that differ in movement complexity. Nevertheless, there is some evidence to suggest that spontaneous behaviour, although relatively preserved, can be rather clumsy or awkward, and that patients with ideomotor apraxia may have subtle kinematic abnormalities in movements made in the laboratory. It remains unclear whether patients with ideomotor apraxia perform normally on movements such as visually guided aiming, that may not depend on higher-order, more cognitive, processes and that are relatively unguided by overlea

Multiple, not just Beta-Gamma, phase-amplitude couplings are associated with Parkinson's disease and related intervention effects.

OBJECTIVE: 1) To evaluate the importance of various EEG Phase Amplitude Couplings (PACs) in predicting motor vigor (MV) in Parkinson's Disease (PD). 2) To determine the effects of dopaminergic medication and non-invasive galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) on MV-related PACs. METHODS: EEG data from 18 PD patients in comparison to 20 HC controls, executing a simple overlearned handgrip task was used, to identify PD-specific alterations. A deep learning model, PACNET, based on the VGG-16 architecture, was used to predict MV from a visual representation of different PACs. RESULTS: Delta-Beta,

Simple arithmetic: not so simple for highly math anxious individuals.

Fluency with simple arithmetic, typically achieved in early elementary school, is thought to be one of the building blocks of mathematical competence. Behavioral studies with adults indicate that math anxiety (feelings of tension or apprehension about math) is associated with poor performance on cognitively demanding math problems. However, it remains unclear whether there are fundamental differences in how high and low math anxious individuals approach overlearned simple arithmetic problems that are less reliant on cognitive control. The current study used functional magnetic resonance imagin

[Preserved ability to read aloud kanji idioms in left handed alexia].

We report a 69-year-old left-handed man, who developed alexia after a right medial occipito-temporal lobe infarction. On admission to the rehabilitation department two months after the onset, neurological examination showed left hemianopia, left hemiparesis, decreased deep sensation on the left side, and alexia. A brain MRI demonstrated infarcts in the right medial occipito-temporal lobe and the splenium of the corpus callosum. Detailed neuropsychological examination was performed two months after the onset. The patient was alert and cooperative. His speech was fluent with some word-finding di
