Assessment Criteria to Diagnose Malnutrition (Undernutrition and Overnutrition) in Hemodialysis Patients.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine if adapted Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria can diagnose overnutrition, in addition to undernutrition, in hemodialysis patients. Additionally, it compared the adapted GLIM criteria with the subjective global assessment (SGA) for diagnosing undernutrition. METHODS: A cross-sectional, descriptive study design with an analytical component was utilized. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was completed with 116 adult participants from 2 public renal units in Cape Town. Data collection included demographic, medical, and ant

Postnatal overnutrition programs the thyroid hormone metabolism and function in adulthood.

Early overnutrition (EO) during lactation leads to obesity, leptin resistance and lower thyroid hormone (TH) levels during adulthood. To better understand the biological significance of this thyroid hypofunction, we studied the long-term effects of postnatal EO on both the function of hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis and the metabolism and action of TH. To induce EO, the litter size was reduced to three pups per litter (small litter (SL) group) on the third day of lactation. In the controls (normal litter group), litter size was adjusted to 10 pups per litter. Rats were killed at PN18

Devastating metabolic consequences of a life of plenty: focus on the dyslipidemia of overnutrition.

Although undernutrition and starvation continue to affect a substantial portion of the world's population, billions of people in both developed and developing countries are affected by the opposite problem: consumption of calories that exceed their daily energy expenditure, a condition of overnutrition. The body's response to a positive net energy balance is to store energy, predominantly as triglyceride molecules, in the subcutaneous and visceral fat compartments that expand and ultimately manifest in obesity. The body's fat depot, however, does not have an infinite capacity to store and expa

Transgenerational inheritance of glucose intolerance in a mouse model of neonatal overnutrition.

Epidemiological and clinical data show that rapid weight gain early in life is strongly associated with several components of the metabolic syndrome. Strikingly, abnormal growth rates in early life can additionally influence diabetes risk in subsequent generations. Here we aim to study whether neonatal overgrowth induces diabetes in offspring and grand-offspring of affected individuals using a mouse model of neonatal overfeeding. We induced neonatal overgrowth (ON-F0) by culling offspring to four pups per dam during lactation. By age 4 months, ON-F0 mice developed many features of the metaboli

Under- and overnutrition dynamics in Chinese children and adults (1991-2004).

OBJECTIVE: To examine trends in under- and overweight prevalence from 1991 to 2004 among adults and children in China by income and residence differentials. METHODS/SUBJECTS: Prevalence, average annual changes and annual relative changes in under- and overweight were determined. In 1991, 2848 children and 6806 adults were surveyed. The 2004 survey included 1566 children and 6172 adults. RESULTS: Higher average annual reductions in underweight prevalence were found among children, particularly rural children, when compared with adults. With respect to income, low-income children and adults ex

Paternal lactational overnutrition induces sex-dependent hypothalamic neuropeptide programming in offspring.

Childhood obesity can induce long-lasting metabolic programming, with consequences that may extend to subsequent generations. However, whether paternal early-life obesity programs hypothalamic neuropeptide pathways controlling feeding behavior in offspring remains poorly understood. We investigated the effects of paternal obesity induced by lactational overnutrition on hypothalamic neuropeptide expression, circulating leptin, and food intake in adult offspring. On postnatal day (PND) 0, male Wistar rats were assigned to normal litters (NL; 10 pups/dam) or small litters (SL; 3 pups/dam) to indu

Early postnatal overnutrition accelerates aging-associated epigenetic drift in pancreatic islets.

Pancreatic islets of type 2 diabetes patients have altered DNA methylation, contributing to islet dysfunction and the onset of type 2 diabetes. The cause of these epigenetic alterations is largely unknown. We set out to test whether (i) islet DNA methylation would change with aging and (ii) early postnatal overnutrition would persistently alter DNA methylation. We performed genome-scale DNA methylation profiling in islets from postnatally over-nourished (suckled in a small litter) and control male mice at both postnatal day 21 and postnatal day 180. DNA methylation differences were validated u

Maternal overnutrition is associated with altered synaptic input to lateral hypothalamic area.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal overnutrition is associated with adverse outcomes in offspring, including increased risk for obesity and diabetes. Here, we aim to test the effects of maternal obesity on lateral hypothalamic feeding circuit function and determine the relationship with body weight regulation. METHODS: Using a mouse model of maternal obesity, we assessed how perinatal overnutrition affected food intake and body weight regulation in adult offspring. We then used channelrhodopsin-assisted circuit mapping and electrophysiological recordings to assess the synaptic connectivity within an extende

Late effects of neonatal undernutrition and overnutrition on pituitary-thyroidal and gonadal function.

Neonatal rats were underfed or overfed and then, at weaning, placed on a normal diet and allowed to mature. Although overfed rats were obese at weaning, they were of normal weight when mature. The underfed rats remained smaller all their lives. The endocrine organs did not share in this retardation, and were actually larger in several instances when expressed per 100 g body weight. Underfed rats also had delayed eye-opening, normal puberty and normal estrous cycles. Pituitary, hypothalamic and serum TSH concentrations were normal, or even increased (in the underfed females). The responses to p

Postnatal early overnutrition causes long-term renal decline in aging male rats.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the influence of postnatal early overnutrition on renal pathophysiological changes in aging rats. METHODS: Three or 10 male pups per mother were assigned to either the small litter (SL) or normal litter (control) groups, respectively, during the first 21 d of life. The effects of early postnatal overnutrition were determined at 12 mo. RESULTS: SL rats weighed more than controls between 4 d and 6 mo of age (P < 0.05). However, between 6 and 12 mo, body weights in both groups were not different. In the SL group, at 12 mo, systolic blood pressure was higher and creatini

Prenatal undernutrition and postnatal overnutrition alter thyroid hormone axis function in sheep.

Mounting evidence led us to hypothesize that i) function of the thyroid hormone (TH) axis can be programed by late gestation undernutrition (LG-UN) and ii) early-postnatal-life overnutrition (EL-ON) exacerbates the fetal impacts on TH axis function. In a 2 × 2 factorial experiment, 21 twin-bearing sheep were fed one of two diets during late gestation: NORM (fulfilling energy and protein requirements) or LOW (50% of NORM). From day 3 to 6 months after birth (around puberty), the twin lambs were assigned to each their diet: conventional (CONV) or high-carbohydrate, high-fat, where after half the

Maternal Overnutrition and Fetal Programming: Long-Term Metabolic, Cognitive, and Epigenetic Consequences.

Maternal nutrition during pregnancy critically influences fetal programming, shaping the offspring's lifelong health and disease susceptibility. Both undernutrition and overnutrition affect fetal metabolism, predisposing offspring to obesity and cardiometabolic disorders in adulthood. This review examines current evidence on how maternal nutrition, particularly overnutrition and its complications, such as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and obesity, affects offspring health. It also explores the biochemical and epigenetic mechanisms underlying aberrant fetal programming induced by an unfav

Maternal overnutrition leads to cognitive and neurochemical abnormalities in C57BL/6 mice.

Objectives: Epidemiological studies have linked maternal obesity with metabolic as well as psychiatric disorders in the progeny. However, very little is known how maternal overnutrition may affect the cognitive abilities of the offspring. Methods: Here, we tested the hypothesis whether maternal high-fat diet (HFD) exposure in mice may induce long-term cognitive impairments and neurochemical dysfunctions in the offspring during different age trajectories. Results: We found that maternal HFD led to cognitive disabilities in adult offspring compared to controls. It was mostly evident in a referen

Overnutrition of young bulls delays in vitro embryonic development and decreases embryo quality†.

Fertility is a significant determinant of productivity in the beef cattle industry and young bulls are often fed highly caloric diets to accelerate growth. However, the effects of such nutritional strategies on early embryonic development remain poorly described. We hypothesized that feeding young bulls a high-gain diet would compromise early embryonic development in vitro. Twenty-nine bulls (13 months of age) were fed a moderate (target average daily gain = 1.22 kg/day; n = 15) or high gain (target average daily gain = 1.81 kg/day; n = 14) diet for 114 days. The high-gain diet increased avera

Maternal overnutrition impacts offspring adiposity and brain appetite markers-modulation by postweaning diet.

Maternal obesity has long-term consequences for the development of hypothalamic neurones involved in energy homeostasis and the metabolic profile in offspring. In the present study, we compared the effects of maternal obesity induced by longstanding high-fat diet (HFD) with milder postnatal overfeeding during suckling induced by litter size reduction. Female Sprague-Dawley rats consumed chow (C) or HFD. On postnatal day 1, litters from chow dams were adjusted to three per dam (small litter, CS) versus 12 control (normal litter, CN). Litters from HFD dams were adjusted to 12 per dam and fed HFD

Interrelationship between alcohol consumption, overnutrition, and pharmacotherapy for liver steatosis: Considerations and proposals.

Alcoholism and overnutrition both contribute to the development of hepatic steatosis in humans. In alcoholic liver disease, steatosis is driven by (i) alcohol oxidation via alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), which increases the NADH/NAD+ ratio, and (ii) induction of cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), which elevates oxidative stress. Both pathways generate toxic acetaldehyde. Overnutrition is characterized by excessive energy intake, high consumption of refined carbohydrates and saturated fatty acids (FAs), and low intake of dietary fiber, fruits, vegetables, and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs

Late gestation maternal overnutrition alters gene expression and histomorphology in neonatal foal testes.

Reproductive health of male offspring following perturbations in maternal nutrition is not well-described in the horse; therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the effects of maternal overnutrition on neonatal foal testicular development. Sixteen Quarter Horse mares were used in a completely randomized design and stratified by expected foaling date, body weight, and body condition score into 1 of 2 dietary treatments beginning on gestational day 235: control (CON; n = 8) fed to meet nutrient requirements and overfed (HIGH; n = 8) fed 40% above CON. At 5 h postpartum, foals were

Elevation of hepatic de novo lipogenesis in mice with overnutrition is dependent on multiple substrates.

Increased de novo lipogenesis (DNL) contributes to hyperlipidemia, MASLD, and ASCVD in insulin-resistant subjects. However, multiple pathways support lipogenesis and few have sought to quantify the contributions of the discrete metabolic pathways that contribute to lipogenesis. In this study, antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) targeting glucokinase (Gck), lactate dehydrogenase A (Ldha), and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase 2 (Gpt2) were utilized to restrict substrate flux from lipogenic precursors in C57BL6/J mice, comparing controls (CO) and chronic overnutrition (ON). In CO mice, ASO treatments

Early postnatal overnutrition as a contributor to metabolic dysregulation: Insights into hepatic epigenetic mechanisms.

This study evaluated the effects of postnatal overnutrition during lactation on hepatic DNA methylation patterns and their relationship with hepatic metabolic disorders. At postnatal day 3, male rats were randomly divided into normal litters (NL, 10 pups per litter) or small litters (SL, three pups per litter). Weight and insulin resistance were assessed at week 3 and week 13. Whole-genome bisulfite sequencing was used to detect alterations in hepatic DNA methylation levels, and enrichment analysis for differentially methylated genes (DMGs) was conducted.
