Detection of Chlorine in a Non-aqueous Solution via Anodic Oxidation and a Photochemical Reaction.

In this study, we developed a new chlorine gas detection method using anodic oxidation and a photochemical reaction. Chlorine gas was temporarily solvated with an aprotic polar solvent having an extensive potential range in the positive direction, and the solvated chlorine molecule was detected by an anodic oxidation reaction. In addition, when combined with ultraviolet light irradiation, we could detect high sensitivity using the photochemical reaction.

Synergistic effect of nitrate-doped TiO2 aerosols on the fast photochemical oxidation of formaldehyde.

The uptake of formaldehyde (HCHO) on mineral dust affects its budget as well as particle properties, yet the process has not yet been fully investigate. Here, TiO2 and nitrate-doped TiO2 aerosols were used as proxies for mineral dust, and the uptake of HCHO was explored in a chamber under both dark and illuminated conditions. The uptake loss of HCHO on UV-illuminated aerosols is 2-9 times faster than its gaseous photolysis in our experimental system. The uptake coefficient in the range of 0.43-1.68 × 10-7 is 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than previous reports on model mineral dust particles.

Thermal and photochemical reactions of NO2 on chromium(III) oxide surfaces at atmospheric pressure.

While many studies of heterogeneous chemistry on Cr(2)O(3) surfaces have focused on its catalytic activity, less is known about chemistry on this surface under atmospheric conditions. We report here studies of the thermal and photochemical reactions of NO(2) on Cr(2)O(3) at one atm in air. In order to follow surface species, the interaction of 16-120 ppm NO(2) with a 15 nm Cr(2)O(3) thin film deposited on a germanium crystal was monitored in a flow system using attenuated total reflectance (ATR) coupled to a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. Gas phase products were monitored in t

Electrochemical or UV-photochemical oxidation of industrial wastes containing polar aromatic sulphonates.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND AND INTENTION: Aromatic sulphonates other than surfactants and their hydroxy and amino-derivatives are important intermediates for the production of azo dyes. Their production on a large scale can be detrimental for the environment, if the by-products of their synthesis are not disposed of appropriately. An industrial waste, the organic components of which were mainly amino and hydroxy-substituted aromatic sulphonates, seriously endangers the environment close to an dismissed Italian industrial site. Inorganic sulphates and chlorides contained in the waste seriously hind

Transition metal doped Sb@SnO2 nanoparticles for photochemical and electrochemical oxidation of cysteine.

Transition metal-doped SnO2 nanoparticles (TM-SnO2) were synthesized by applying a thermos-synthesis method, which first involved doping SnO2 with Sb and then with transition metals (TM = Cr, Mn, Fe, or Co) of various concentrations to enhance a catalytic effect of SnO2. The doped particles were then analyzed by using various surface analysis techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM), and high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES). We evaluated the catalytic effects of these doped particles on the o

Metal complexes as photochemical nitric oxide precursors: potential applications in the treatment of tumors.

The bioregulatory molecule NO plays key roles in cancer biology and has been implicated in both tumor growth and suppression. Furthermore, it is a gamma-radiation sensitizer that may enhance selective killing of neoplastic tissues. For these reasons, there is considerable interest in developing methods for NO delivery to specific physiological targets. In this Perspective, we describe ongoing investigations focused on photochemical methodologies to deliver therapeutic doses of NO to such targets utilizing transition metal complexes that are nitric oxide precursors. The photochemical strategy h

Photochemical oxidation of iodized X-ray contrast media (XRC) in hospital wastewater.

Iodized X-ray contrast media (XRC) for medical applications are responsible for the high concentration of AOX (halogenated organic compounds adsorbable on activated carbon) in hospital wastewater exceeding the legal German discharge limit. The refractory properties of these substances lead to an accumulation in the natural waterbody. The elimination of contrast media from hospital wastewater by photochemical oxidation with hydrogen peroxide was investigated. The mechanism and the kinetics of the degradation of XRC were examined. These experiments demonstrate that a complete removal of the orga

Implementing In-Cell Fast Photochemical Oxidation of Proteins in a Platform Incubator with a Movable XY Stage.

Fast photochemical oxidation of proteins (FPOP) is a protein footprinting technique that is being increasingly used in MS-based proteomics. FPOP is utilized to study protein-protein interactions, protein-ligand interactions, and protein conformational dynamics. This method has recently been extended to protein labeling in live cells (IC-FPOP), allowing the study of protein conformations in the complex cellular environment. Traditionally, IC-FPOP has been executed using a single cell flow system, in which hydrodynamic focusing drives cells along in a single file line, keeping the cells from clu

Health effects from freshly emitted versus oxidatively or photochemically aged air pollutants.

Epidemiology studies over the past five decades have provided convincing evidence that exposure to air pollution is associated with multiple adverse health outcomes, including increased mortality. Air pollution is a complex mixture of particles, vapors and gases emitted from natural and anthropogenic sources as well as formed through photochemical transformation processes. In metropolitan areas, air pollutants from combustion emissions feature a blend of emitted particles, oxides of carbon, sulfur and nitrogen, volatile organic compounds, and secondary reaction products, such as ozone, nitroge

A sterilization system using ultraviolet photochemical reactions based on nitrous oxide and oxygen gases.

Active oxygen species (AOS) generated under ultraviolet (UV) lamps can be applied for various industrial processes owing to extremely strong oxidative abilities. We have already reported on an application of the AOS for a sterilization process of microorganisms. Here, a sterilization method using active oxygen generated under ultraviolet (UV) lamps introducing nitrous oxide (N2O) and oxygen gases into a vacuum chamber was investigated. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas was readily produced from N2O by UV photochemical reactions under the low-pressure mercury lamp and then used to sterilize medical de

Thermal and photochemical oxidation of self-assembled monolayers on alumina particles exposed to nitrogen dioxide.

Alumina is an important component of airborne dust particles as well as of building materials and soils found in the tropospheric boundary layer. While the uptake and reactions of oxides of nitrogen and their photochemistry on alumina have been reported in the past, little is known about the chemistry when organics are also present. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy at ∼23 °C was used to study reactions of NO(2) on γ-Al(2)O(3) particles that had been derivatized using 7-octenyltrichlorosilane to form a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). For comparison, the reactions with untreated γ-

Photo/photochemical oxidation of cyanide and metal-cyanide complexes: ultraviolet A versus ultraviolet C.

Degradation of free cyanide (CN(-)), weak-acid dissociable (WAD) (Zn(CN)4(2-), Cu(CN)3(2-)) and strong-acid dissociable (SAD) (Fe(CN)6(4-) cyanide complexes by photo and photochemical oxidation with ultraviolet (UV) light and H2O2 was investigated. The experiments were performed in batch reactors under ultraviolet A (UVA; 395 nm) and ultraviolet C (UVC; 254 nm) light; the degradation efficiency was followed in terms of free cyanide, complex and metal concentrations. UVC and UVA photo-oxidations were found to be equally effective in CN(-) and WAD degradation, while the degradation of the SAD co

Comparable Organic Aerosol Mass Enhancement during Photochemical and Dark Oxidation of Biomass Burning Emissions.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed from wildfire/biomass-burning emissions (BB) represents a significant fraction of global SOA production. However, there are large uncertainties in representing BB-SOA in climate models. We studied the evolution of organic aerosols (OA) from burning three biomass samples─savannah grass, savannah wood, and boreal forest surface─under different combustion conditions and during daytime (photochemical oxidation) and nighttime (dark oxidation) aging in an atmospheric chamber. OA dominated the BB emissions by contributing ∼82-99% of the total PM1 mass. Atmospher

Heterogeneous Photochemical Generation of Hydroxyl Radical in Mineral-Organics Systems: Dual Roles of Iron Oxides.

Photosensitive organic molecules and semiconducting minerals have been widely reported to produce hydroxyl radicals (•OH) in aquatic environments. However, studies employing multicomponent systems remain limited. This study investigates the role of minerals in •OH photochemical generation in the presence of organic compounds with distinct functional groups. Using model compounds to represent key moieties in dissolved organic matter (DOM), we examined the capacity of both single-component systems (organic matter and minerals) and composite systems (ferrihydrite-organic matter) to generate •OH.

Enhanced oxidative potential and SO2 heterogeneous oxidation on candle soot after photochemical aging: Influencing mechanisms of different irradiation wavelengths.

Photochemistry plays a significant role in the atmospheric aging processes of soot. However, the physicochemical properties and changes in environmental and health effects of soot particles from sacrificial sources after photochemical aging remain unclear. The reaction mechanisms of soot under different irradiation wavelengths require further investigation. In this study, candle soot from sacrificial sources was subjected to photochemical aging using ultraviolet (UV) and visible light. The experimental results of oxidation potential (OP) and heterogeneous oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) indi

Environmentally Friendly, Photochemical Access to [ N ∧ C ∧ N ]AuIII Pincer Complexes By Oxidative Addition.

Starting from commercially available DMSAuCl and diazonium salts, cationic [ N ∧ C ∧ N ]AuIII complexes were synthesized in a selective, photosensitizer-free, photochemical reaction by irradiation with blue LED light. This new protocol represents the first easy synthesis of these types of pincer complexes in moderate to excellent yield starting from a readily available gold(I) precursor with nitrogen as the only by-product. Owing to the disadvantages of known protocols, especially the toxicity in the case of a transmetalation with mercury or the necessity for a mostly twofold excess of a go

Parahalogenated phenols accelerate the photochemical release of nitrogen oxides from frozen solutions containing nitrate.

The photolysis of nitrate anion (NO(3)(-)) contained in surface ice and snow can be a regionally significant source of gas-phase nitrogen oxides and affect the composition of the planetary boundary layer. In this study, the photochemical release of nitrogen oxides from frozen solutions containing NO(3)(-) in the presence of organic compounds was investigated. Gas-phase nitrogen oxides were quantified primarily by NO-O(3) chemiluminescence detection of NO and NO(y) (=NO + NO(2) + HONO + HNO(3) + ∑PAN + ∑AN ...) and cavity ring-down spectroscopy of NO(2) and total alkyl nitrates (∑AN). The photo

Photochemical oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds in an urban location based on short time monitoring data.

This study examines the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds (RSCs) in urban ambient air. The photochemical conversions of RSC (such as DMS, CS2, H2S, DMDS, and CH3SH) to a further oxidized form (e.g., SO2, MSA, and H2SO4) were assessed using a photochemical box model. For our model simulation of RSC oxidation, measurements were taken at an urban monitoring station in Seoul, Korea (37.6 degrees N, 127 degrees E) during three separate time periods (e.g., Sept. 17-18, Oct. 23, and Oct. 27-28, 2003). The results indicate that DMS and H2S were the dominant RSCs with concentrations of 370 +/- 140

Nitric Oxide-Mediated Modulation of Photorespiratory Enzymes and Photochemical Components in Leaves of Pea Plants (Pisum sativum).

The photorespiratory metabolism safeguards photosynthesis against abiotic and biotic stress. Nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels rise in plants during abiotic stress. Low concentrations of NO or ROS are beneficial as signalling molecules, but they can be toxic to plant cells at high concentrations. ROS are known to modulate photorespiration; however, it is unclear whether NO affects photorespiratory enzymes and photochemical components simultaneously. We therefore used sodium nitroprusside (SNP) under dark, moderate light (ML), or high light (HL) conditions to simultaneo

Tuning Physical and Photochemical Properties of Perovskite Oxides via B-Site Co-Substitution with Fe and Nb.

Perovskite-structured oxides exhibit excellent performance across a range of applications; however, their widespread adoption is often constrained by wide bandgap energies and high charge recombination rates. To address these limitations, this study introduces iron (Fe) and niobium (Nb) ions into the B-site of the ABO3 lattice to construct the half-metallic double perovskites of the formula A2FeNbO6 (A = Ca, Sr, or Ba). The materials were synthesized using a facile one-step molten salt method, and their physical, photochemical, and optical properties were systematically investigated. UV-vis DR
