The oxyphil and C cells of the human thyroid gland. A cytochemical and histopathologic review.

The C and oxyphil cells of the human thyroid are analyzed in the light of recent advances in cellular biology, cytochemistry, and histopathology. The C cell is present in the normal human thyroid, where its identification is cardinally by means of argyrophilic cytoplasmic granules. The morphology, topography and argyrophilia of C cells are discussed with reference to tumor, cyst, and teratoma formation in the thyroid gland. Oxyphil cells of the thyroid are cytochemically akin to C cells but arise from follicular cells. They occur in the thyroid and other protein-producing organs, but are thems

Defects of the respiratory chain in oxyphil and chief cells of the normal parathyroid and in hyperfunction.

Immunohistochemical detection of complex HIII (ubiquinone- cytochrome-c-oxidoreductase) and complex IV (cytochrome-c-oxidase) of the respiratory chain was performed in parathyroids of 164 humans with normal renal function (group I) and in 55 patients with chronic renal insufficiency (group II) obtained at autopsy. In group I, 33 of the 164 cases showed defects of the respiratory chain (20%). Eighty-five percent of the defects occurred in advanced age (> 50 years). In group II, 39 of 55 cases (70%) had defects, and about 70% of the defects occurred after age 50. In both groups, more than 80% of

Functioning oxyphil cell adenomas of the parathyroid gland. A study of 15 cases.

Parathyroid adenomas composed predominantly of chief cells are the most frequent cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. Until as recently as 1978, the rare oxyphil cell parathyroid adenoma was generally considered nonfunctioning. A retrospective review of 500 consecutive patients at the Massachusetts General Hospital with a diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism associated with parathyroid adenoma during the years 1979-1987 yielded 15 (3.0%) oxyphil cell adenomas. A total of 65 case reports of hyperparathyroidism associated with a diagnosis of oxyphil cell adenomas were reviewed, applying the same di

Importance of oxyphil cells for 99mTc-sestamibi uptake in primary hyperparathyroidism: a retrospective observational study.

In patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT), the importance of oxyphil cells for 99mTc-sestamibi uptake is uncertain. This retrospective observational study of pHPT patients evaluated independent associations between oxyphil cell content (OCC) and preoperative scintigraphic (SC) findings, using logistic regression analyses. We studied 76 patients with pHPT before and after operation. Preoperative SC was able to definitively identify abnormal parathyroid tissue in 47 patients (61.8%). The median relative OCC (postoperative histopathological examination) was 10% (IQR 0.25% - 40%) and the m

Integrated transcriptomic and proteomic analyses for the characterization of parathyroid oxyphil cells in uremic patients.

Chief cells are the predominant cells in parathyroid glands of healthy adults; however, parathyroid oxyphil cells, whose function is unknown, increase dramatically in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). Calcitriol and calcimimetics are the most powerful treatments for SHPT, while the mechanisms leading to calcitriol or calcimimetic resistance in oxyphil cell-predominant SHPT are unknown. Here we used transcriptomic and proteomic techniques to characterize oxyphil cells by comparing the differences between chief and oxyphil cell nodules of parathyroid glands in uremic patients.

Single-cell RNA sequencing reveals transdifferentiation of parathyroid chief cells into oxyphil cells in patients with uremic secondary hyperparathyroidism.

The parathyroid gland is one of the main organs that regulate calcium and phosphorus metabolism. It is mainly composed of chief cells and oxyphil cells. Oxyphil cell counts are low in the parathyroid glands of healthy adults but are dramatically increased in patients with uremia and secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). Increased oxyphil cell counts are related to drug treatment resistance, but the origin of oxyphil cells and the mechanism of proliferation remain unknown. Herein, three types of parathyroid nodules (chief cell nodules, oxyphil cell nodules and mixed nodules, respectively) excis

Metachronous double parathyroid adenomas involving two different cell types: chief cell and oxyphil cell.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a patient with the rare occurrence of metachronous double parathyroid adenomas involving two different cell types. METHODS: We present a case report and a summary of the related literature. RESULTS: Double parathyroid adenomas are rare, occurring in 1.7 to 9% of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. Most double parathyroid adenomas are synchronous lesions; few metachronous double parathyroid adenomas have previously been reported. Most parathyroid adenomas are of the chief cell variety, with oxyphil cell adenomas occurring in less than 1% of cases. In a 73-year-ol

Importance of oxyphil cells for parathyroid hormone/calcium concentrations in primary hyperparathyroidism: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: In patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT), the importance of oxyphil cells for hormonal activity is uncertain. METHODS: This retrospective observational study analyzed the histopathological findings of postoperative specimens from patients with pHPT (single gland disease). The indication for surgery was based on increased plasma intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) concentrations and the presence of symptoms typical of pHPT. To quantify approximate oxyphil cell content (OCC), we determined the percentage of oxyphil cells observed in each specimen. To quantify the approximat

Terracing Oxyphilic Platinum Sustains High-Rate Ammonia Electrolysis and Fuel Cells.

The sluggish kinetics and catalyst poisoning of the ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) pose technical barriers to adopting ammonia as a distributable carrier for green hydrogen and electricity. Herein, a class of PtIrRh nanowires (NWs, ≈1 nm diameter) is report with abundant terraces and oxyphilic doping for enhanced AOR electrocatalysis. It is first unravel, through size-dependent AOR activity, that well-coordinated terraces outperform under-coordinated steps on platinum, guiding the rational design of 1D architecture. The compositionally-optimized Pt86Ir5Rh9 NWs achieve a mass activity of 324

Oxyphil Cell Parathyroid Adenomas Causing Primary Hyperparathyroidism: a Clinico-Pathological Correlation.

Oxyphil cell parathyroid adenomas (OPA) are considered to be an uncommon cause of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), and were historically thought to be clinically silent. It has been our clinical impression that these adenomas present more often than previously thought and may manifest a more severe form of primary hyperparathyroidism than classical adenoma. The aim of this study was to describe the incidence and clinical presentation of OPA. An observational case-control study was undertaken. The study group comprised patients undergoing parathyroidectomy for PHPT where the final pathology

Cox-2 expression in the oxyphilic cells of the normal, hyperplastic, and adenomatous parathyroid gland.

We investigated cyclooxygenase expression in parathyroid glands from patients with various pathological conditions in order to coordinate levels of immunoreactivity with histology, with preoperative serum levels of calcium, phosphate, and intact parathyroid hormone, and with clinical diagnoses. Surgical specimens were obtained from 38 patients diagnosed with adenoma and primary, secondary, and tertiary hyperplasias. Incidentally removed parathyroids served as controls. After routine histological processing, approximations of total area and area of oncocytic nodules were calculated for each sec

Unraveling the mystery of parathyroid oxyphil cells in uremic SHPT: ongoing challenges and multi-omics advances.

The parathyroid gland, a pivotal organ regulating calcium and phosphorus homeostasis, harbors two primary cell types: chief cells and the enigmatic oxyphil cells. While scarce in healthy individuals, oxyphil cells undergo pronounced proliferation in uremic secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), and their abundance is strongly associated with resistance to first-line therapies like calcitriol and calcimimetics. This correlation underscores a critical clinical challenge, yet the origin, functional role, and mechanisms driving oxyphil cell proliferation have remained poorly understood. Integrated

Papillary carcinoma of the thyroid, oxyphil cell type, "clear cell" variant: a light- and electron-microscopic study.

A unique case of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid having the combined features of three morphological subtypes--tall cell, clear cell and Hürthle cell--has been studied by light and electron microscopy. The distinctive neoplastic cells had an oxyphilic basal zone, a mid-placed nucleus and a clear apical region. Ultrastructurally, the cytoplasm was virtually filled with mitochondria, characteristic of Hürthle cells, but the unusual finding was the marked distention and emptiness of those mitochondria located in the apical zone, accounting for the clear phenomenon noted by light microscopy. Functioning oxyphil cell adenoma of the parathyroid gland: a clinicopathologic study of ten patients with hyperparathyroidism.

Adenomas of the parathyroid gland, the majority of which are of the solitary chief cell type, are the most frequent cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. Parathyroid adenomas composed predominantly or exclusively of oxyphil cells are rare and were previously considered nonfunctioning. Among 160 consecutive patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who were explored surgically, ten (6.25 per cent) had adenomas of the oxyphil cell variety. The eight women and two men in this series ranged in age from 28 to 82 years (average, 58 years). The tumors weighed from 0.2 to 4.0 g (average, 1.2 g). Nine

Possible association of CEA expression with oxyphilic change but not with C-cell hyperplasia in Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

Reactive C-cell hyperplasia (CCH) has been observed in cases of autoimmune Hashimoto's thyroiditis; however, its occurrence in Graves' disease, the other major autoimmune disorder, has not yet been investigated. On the other hand, although Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) serum levels have been reported elevated in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD), the source of CEA production at the cellular level is not elucidated. The aim of this study was to evaluate CCH and CEA immunohistochemical expression and comparatively analyze them in 136 ATD cases (107 Hashimoto's and 29 Graves' diseas

Relationship between parathyroid oxyphil cell proportion and clinical characteristics of patients with chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Parathyroid glands consist of chief cells and oxyphil cells. The parathyroid oxyphil cell proportion increased dramatically in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The importance of the oxyphil cell in the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) has been enhanced in recent years. The aim of this study was to explore the possible relationship between parathyroid oxyphil cell proportion and clinical features of patients with CKD. METHODS: From December 2010 to December 2018, 78 consecutive patients with CKD 5 who underwent parathyroidectomy (PTX) were reviewed. None

Parathyroid gland adenoma in primary hyperparathyroidism: report of two cases--chief and oxyphil cell adenoma.

Parathyroid adenomas are classified into two types: chief cell and oxyphil cell variants. In this report two types of parathyroid adenoma in association with hyperparathyroidism were examined. Both cases had suffered from renal calculi, and underwent operation. The laboratory tests showed high serum calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels. An exploratory surgery revealed a solitary tumor in each case. After extirpation of the parathyroid tumor these data returned to normal values. Electronmicroscopically, oxyphil cell adenoma in this report was characterized by numerous mitochondria and a
