Exploring Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Youths' E-Cigarette Resistance Strategies: Implications for Tobacco Product Use Prevention.

This study examined the e-cigarette and vaping resistance strategies used by Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) youths in rural Hawai'i. Focus groups (N = 17) were conducted in eight geographically dispersed elementary, middle/intermediate, and multilevel schools in low-income communities on Hawai'i Island. Sixty-nine youths (67% NHPI, Mage = 12.5 years) participated in this study. The resistance strategies discussed across the greatest number of groups were "refuse" (saying no), "explain" (providing reasons for vaping refusal), "avoid" (avoiding people or places where e-cigarettes we

Observations on the epidemiology of club foot in Polynesian and Caucasian populations.

Although Polynesians are affected by idiopathic club foot deformity more commonly than other racial groups, epidemiological surveys performed in Auckland and Glasgow showed no other significant difference in their pattern of presentation compared with Caucasians. Distinctions in sex ratio and maternal age, reported previously between groups of index cases with and without a family history of the condition, were not confirmed in either racial group, and the predominance of right sided over left sided unilateral cases was no greater in Polynesians than in Caucasians. There was an excess of spora

Association of Gout Polygenic Risk Score With Age at Disease Onset and Tophaceous Disease in European and Polynesian Men With Gout.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a gout polygenic risk score (PRS) is associated with age at gout onset and tophaceous disease in European, East Polynesian, and West Polynesian men and women with gout. METHODS: A 19-variant gout PRS was produced in 7 European gout cohorts (N = 4,016), 2 East Polynesian gout cohorts (N = 682), and 1 West Polynesian gout cohort (N = 490). Sex-stratified regression models were used to estimate the relationship between the PRS and age at gout onset and tophaceous disease. RESULTS: The PRS was associated with earlier age at gout onset in men (β = -3.61 in years pe

Cervical cancer disparities in stage at presentation for disaggregated Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.

BACKGROUND: Over 20 million people in the United States identified as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander in 2022. Despite the diversity of immigration histories, lived experiences, and health needs within the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander community, prior studies in cervical cancer have considered this group in aggregate. OBJECTIVE: We sought to analyze disparities in cervical cancer stage at presentation in the United States, focusing on disaggregated Asian American, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander groups. STUDY DESIGN: Data from the United Stat

Sugar-sweetened beverages, urate, gout and genetic interaction.

The clinical manifestations of gout occur as a result of immune responses to monosodium urate crystals. Elevated serum levels of urate (hyperuricemia) are a prerequisite for the development of gout with reduced fractional renal excretion of uric acid (FEUA) an important cause. In New Zealand, Mãori and Pacific Island people have inherently raised urate levels with one consequence a higher prevalence of more severe gout. One characteristic metabolic effect of fructose, present in sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), is raised urate from hepatic processing of fructose. Here we discuss, and place in

Traditional gift-giving and gambling amongst Pacific mothers living in New Zealand.

Cultural variables are implicated in gambling literature as playing an important role in the initiation and maintenance of gambling activity, however there remains a paucity of research that defines and investigates the association between cultural factors, gambling and problem gambling amongst different cultural groups. The first data collection point for a cohort of mothers within the longitudinal Pacific Islands Families study identified that the Pacific cultural practice of traditional gift-giving was associated with gambling activity and expenditure. In this paper, data about traditional

Hepatitis B Prevalence and Risk Factors in Foreign-Born Asians and Pacific Islanders at a Federally Qualified Health Center in Hawai'i, 2015-2020.

The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of chronic hepatitis B infection in foreign-born Asians and Pacific Islanders at Kalihi-Palama Health Center in Honolulu, Hawai'i, and to assess the association between both chronic and resolved hepatitis B infection and risk factors such as household exposure to hepatitis B virus and geographic location of birthplace. The study involved cross-sectional data from 997 participants who accessed medical services at Kalihi-Palama Health Center between September 2015 and July 2020. The prevalence of chronic hepatitis B was 10.7%. On multiva

Exploring community knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of Alzheimer's Disease/Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementias and healthy ageing in Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders.

Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) disparities exist in the rapidly growing and extremely heterogeneous Asian American and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NH/PI) ageing populations in the United States. Limited community-clinical resources supporting culturally competent and timely diagnosis exacerbate barriers to existing care services in these populations. Community-based participatory research or community-engaged research are proven community-academic research approaches that can support the development and implementation of community-focused programmes to maximise c

An assessment of floating marine debris within the breakwaters of the University of the South Pacific, Marine Studies Campus at Laucala Bay.

Contributions of Pacific Islands countries to marine plastic debris are disproportionate to the effects on people's connections to the ocean. Plastic waste management initiatives face challenges in containing waste and consequently plastics plague coastal environments. The Seabin, a floating trash skimmer, presents a novel and replicable approach to collecting and cataloguing marine plastics. The objectives of the study were to conduct an audit of marine plastic debris within the breakwaters of the University of the South Pacific, Marine Campus at Laucala Bay while simultaneously gauging the e

Deep-seated fungal diseases in the South Pacific, especially in New Caledonia.

The main deep-seated fungal diseases and their encountered pathology in New Caledonia and other islands of the South Pacific are reviewed (1970-96). Cryptococcosis is encountered in all islands of the South Pacific, Australia and Papua New Guinea, with a predominance of variety gattii, which is associated with some species of Eucalyptus. Histoplasmosis is not uncommon, and there was an epidemic in New Caledonia in 1994 among people who had visited a bat-inhabited cave. Mycetomas, in particular presenting as pale granules in tissues, are encountered in New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea,

Prevalence and concordance of smoking among mothers and fathers within the Pacific Islands Families Study.

Cigarette smoking continues to contribute to the adverse mortality and morbidity rates for Pacific people in New Zealand. Using a large cohort study of Pacific families, this paper investigates the prevalence of smoking amongst Pacific mothers and fathers over three time-points, up to six years after the arrival of their child, to determine the concordance of both partners' reports of that smoking. Moreover, the patterns of smoking between partners were investigated over the three major Pacific ethnicities that reside in New Zealand (Samoan, Tongan and Cook Island Māori). Maternal self-report

Sundadonty Revisited: Dental Evidence Supports a Mixed East Asian and Australo-Melanesian Ancestry for Southeast Asians.

OBJECTIVES: C.G. Turner divided the "Mongoloid" dental complex into Sinodonty and Sundadonty, but it remains unclear if the latter is a distinct complex or the product of Holocene gene flow between East Asians and the earlier inhabitants of Southeast Asia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dental data for 863 individuals representing 16 populations from East Asia, Southeast Asia, Australo-Melanesia, and the Pacific were investigated. Three methods were employed: rASUDAS2 analysis based on a naïve Bayesian algorithm to classify individuals into clusters, the R-matrix approach to obtain dij distances, FST

Smile dynamics: A comparative study of Fijians and NZ Europeans.

BACKGROUND: The Fijian 'Bula Smile' is often described as the world's friendliest; however, its description remains anecdotal. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe and compare the dynamics of Fijians' smiles with those of New Zealand Europeans. METHODS: An observational study was conducted on two ethnic groups, Fijians (FJ; N = 23) and New Zealand Europeans (NZ; N = 23), age- and gender-matched. All participants were asked to watch amusing videos, and their reactions were video recorded. The videos were analysed by software to assess the frequency, duration, intensity and genuineness of s

Acute aortic syndrome: nationwide study of epidemiology, management, and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies on acute aortic syndrome (AAS) have relied largely on unverified administrative coding, leading to wide-ranging estimates of incidence. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence, management, and outcomes of AAS in Aotearoa New Zealand. METHODS: This was a national population-based retrospective study of patients presenting with an index admission of AAS from 2010 to 2020. Cases from the Ministry of Health National Minimum Dataset, National Mortality Collection, and the Australasian Vascular Audit were cross-verified with hospital notes. Poisson regression
