Disparities in Kidney Transplantation Access and Outcomes among Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders in the United States.

KEY POINTS: Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander kidney transplant candidates were geographically concentrated in Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network regions 5 and 6. Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander kidney candidates were more likely to be inactive on the waitlist with longer wait time to transplant. Once transplanted, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander recipients had similar long-term posttransplant outcomes as White recipients. BACKGROUND: Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) individuals are an underrepresented population with a disproportionate burden of ESKD. Many

Correlation of genotype and in vitro susceptibilities of Cryptococcus gattii strains from the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

Cryptococcus gattii emerged in North America in 1999 as a human and veterinary pathogen on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The emergent subtype, VGIIa, and the closely related subtype VGIIb can now be found in the United States in Washington, Oregon, and California. We performed multilocus sequence typing and antifungal susceptibility testing on 43 isolates of C. gattii from human patients in Oregon, Washington, California, and Idaho. In contrast to Vancouver Island, VGIIa was the most frequent but not the predominant subtype in the northwest United States. Antifungal susceptibility testin

Cancer incidence trends among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander populations in the United States, 2000-2022.

BACKGROUND: Asian Americans (AA), Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (NHPI), collectively referred to as AANHPI, are heterogeneous populations with varying cancer risks across ethnic groups. Incidence rates and trends are examined for eight AA groups (Asian Indian/Pakistani, Chinese (including Taiwanese), Filipino, Japanese, Kampuchean, Korean, Laotian, and Vietnamese) and three NHPI groups (Native Hawaiian, Guamanian/Chamorro, and Samoan). METHODS: Annual cancer incidence from 21 Surveillance, Epidemiology, End Results (SEER) registries and population denominators from 2000-2022 were us

Recent increase in Nybelinia surmenicola prevalence and intensity in Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) off the United States west coast.

A larval marine cestode was found in 82.0% of 834 Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) stomachs collected from 341 trawl stations along the United States west coast during the summers of 2008 and 2009. Morphology and DNA sequencing was used to identify the cestode as Nybelinia surmenicola. In an examination of 131 Pacific hake stomachs collected from the same region in 1999, N. surmenicola prevalence was 35.1%. The results from a general linear model suggested that their prevalence is influenced by year and latitude, Pacific hake size, and sex. Mean intensity of N. surmenicola in 2008-2009 was

using photovoice to foster a student vision for natural spaces on a college campus in the Pacific Northwest United States.

Undergraduate students face a host of stressors and may be particularly susceptible to encountering health-related challenges throughout college life. Seventy-two (N = 72) undergraduate students enrolled at a newly developed university campus located in the pacific northwest United States used the photovoice research method in crafting a vision for how natural spaces on campus might be maintained and minimally developed to promote student health. Five student-created themes emerged: 1) mental and physical health, 2) developing community spaces, 3) sustainable infrastructure design, 4) preservi

Brucella pinnipedialis infections in Pacific harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardsi) from Washington State, USA.

In 1994 a novel Brucella sp., later named B. pinnipedialis, was identified in stranded harbor seals (Phoca vitulina). This Brucella sp. is a potential zoonotic pathogen and is capable of causing disease in domestic animals. Serologic, microbiologic, and pathologic data collected from live captured and stranded harbor seals were used to better describe the epizootiology of B. pinnipedialis in harbor seals from Washington State, USA, in 1994 through 2006. We found no sex predilection in harbor seal exposure or infection with B. pinnipedialis but noted a significant difference in prevalence among

Prevalence of parasitism in client-owned dogs determined by fecal examinations in the Pacific northwest, United States, in 2021-2023.

It is important to continuously monitor the prevalence of parasitic infections in client-owned dogs. However, very limited information is available for the Pacific Northwest (PNW) region of the United States (US). Our main study objective was to determine the prevalence of parasitism observed in the feces of client-owned dogs in the PNW, US. Additionally, the prevalence of parasitic infections was statistically compared by sex, age, and seasonality. Results of all the fecal examinations with various methodologies performed at Zoetis Reference Laboratories in Mukilteo, Washington, from February

Interannual variability of human plague occurrence in the Western United States explained by tropical and North Pacific Ocean climate variability.

Plague is a vector-borne, highly virulent zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. It persists in nature through transmission between its hosts (wild rodents) and vectors (fleas). During epizootics, the disease expands and spills over to other host species such as humans living in or close to affected areas. Here, we investigate the effect of large-scale climate variability on the dynamics of human plague in the western United States using a 56-year time series of plague reports (1950-2005). We found that El Niño Southern Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation in combinat

An Antiracism Community-Based Participatory Research With Organizations Serving Immigrant and Marginalized Communities, Including Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders in the United States Pacific Northwest: Qualitative Description Study With Key Informants.

BACKGROUND: Asian American (AA) community leaders, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NH/PI) community leaders, and allies in the United States Pacific Northwest expressed concern that there are families and children from AA communities and NH/PI communities who experience and witness acts of xenophobia and racism. This can cause racial trauma. The long-time practice of aggregating AA and NH/PI data contributes to erasure and makes it challenging to advance health equity, such as allocating resources. According to AAPI Data's long-awaited report in June 2022, there are over 24 million AAs and 1

Comparison of Hygroscopicity, Volatility, and Mixing State of Submicrometer Particles between Cruises over the Arctic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

Ship-borne measurements of ambient aerosols were conducted during an 11 937 km cruise over the Arctic Ocean (cruise 1) and the Pacific Ocean (cruise 2). A frequent nucleation event was observed during cruise 1 under marine influence, and the abundant organic matter resulting from the strong biological activity in the ocean could contribute to the formation of new particles and their growth to a detectable size. Concentrations of particle mass and black carbon increased with increasing continental influence from polluted areas. During cruise 1, multiple peaks of hygroscopic growth factor (HGF)

Prevalence and Correlates of Lifetime Ecstasy/MDMA Use Among Asian American and Pacific Islander Adult Populations in the United States, 2015-2020.

Little is known about ecstasy/MDMA use among Asian American and Pacific Islander populations. Research is important because AAPIs face unique cultural factors that may influence use. We estimated the prevalence and correlates of lifetime ecstasy/MDMA use based on a representative sample of US AAPI adults aged ≥18 from the 2015-2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. An estimated 5.1% of AAPI adults used ecstasy in their lifetime. Compared to males, females had higher odds of use (aOR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.08-1.98). Compared to those aged 18-25, those aged 26-34 were at increased odds for use

Characterizing disparities in receipt of palliative care for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders with metastatic cancer in the United States.

PURPOSE: Palliative care plays essential roles in cancer care. However, differences in receipt among individuals identifying as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Other Pacific Islanders (AA&NHPI) with cancer are not well-characterized, especially when these diverse groups are disaggregated. We characterized disparities in receipt of palliative care among AA&NHPI patients with AJCC Stage IV prostate, breast, or lung cancer. METHODS: We performed multivariable logistic regressions were performed in this retrospective cohort analysis, using deidentified data from the National Cancer Database

Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, mental health and treatment need in the United States during COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: Before COVID-19, Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders (NH/PI) endured a heavy burden of alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) use in prior US data. Responding to reports that many NH/PI communities experienced severe COVID-19 disparities that could exacerbate their ATOD burden, we partnered with NH/PI communities to assess the substance use patterns and treatment needs of diverse NH/PIs during COVID-19. METHODS: Collaborating with NH/PI community organisations across five states with large NH/PI populations, we conducted a large-scale investigation of NH/PI ATOD use, mental healt

Incidence of extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas among whites, blacks, and Asians/Pacific Islanders in the United States: anatomic site and histology differences.

BACKGROUND: Extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounts for much of the increase in NHL incidence in the past three decades in the United States, but its descriptive epidemiology is scarce in the literature. METHODS: Incidence data for the years 1999-2003 were from 38 population-based cancer registries, covering 82% of US population. We grouped anatomic sites of extranodal NHLs according to the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) site recodes, and histology subtypes according to the nested classification of lymphoid neoplasms developed by the Pathology Working Group of the I
