BACKGROUND: Use of honey pacifiers by infants presenting to a pediatric clinic at a county hospital in Houston, Texas, was observed by several of our staff members. Although we could not find any published studies linking the use of honey pacifiers to infant botulism, we also could not find any studies assessing the prevalence of honey pacifier use in general.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive study using a novel survey that had 19 items. The survey was administered to the parents of children up to age 12 months presenting to a county hospital pediatric clinic for well-chil

A case of a child, who used the pacifier with an uncommon habit is presented. She pulled out the hair on the right side of her head after rolling it round the base of the pacifier. She then sucked it and swallowed it. Based on this report the authors are emphasizing the importance of accompanying the orofacial development of the child as from its first year of life.

BACKGROUND: The use of infant pacifiers (dummies) is common in Australasian communities and has been reported to be associated with various injuries, but to date ocular trauma has not been reported.
CASE REPORT: A 14-month-old child sustained a penetrating eye injury from the infant pacifier that was in his mouth during a minor fall. Only a lid laceration was detected at the time. One week later he presented with mydriasis, heterochromia and a poor red reflex. Diagnosis of a penetrating eye injury was made by examination under anaesthesia, with B-scan ultrasonography demonstrating hypotony bu

Pacifiers and teething devices are commonly introduced during infancy to soothe and comfort. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of emergency room visits for pediatric craniofacial injuries associated with pacifiers and teething devices. All craniofacial injuries due to "Pacifiers or Teething Rings" in children less than 2 years old were retrieved from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). Age, sex, race, context of injury, cause of injury, and patient disposition were collected. Query revealed an estimated nationwide incidence of 5424 injuries from the years 20

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of the dental arches and some oral myofunctional structures in 36- to 60-month-old children who sucked a pacifier or did not have this habit.
METHODS: Sixty-one children were divided into 3 groups: (1) those who never sucked a pacifier, (2) those who exclusively sucked a physiological pacifier, and (3) those who exclusively sucked a conventional one. A clinical examination was performed on the children to observe the relationship between the arches and their width, as well as the following oral myofunctional structures: lips,

BACKGROUND: As a result of the dental alterations pacifiers can cause, several designs have been described, differing in the shape and size of the teat. The aim of this review was to compare the influence of the physiological pacifier on the development of malocclusions in children with other types of pacifier. The research question was: does the use of physiological pacifiers cause less dentomaxillary alterations than other designs?
METHODS: A scoping review was carried out according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) using PubMed, Embase, and

BACKGROUND: Non-nutritive sucking habits may adversely affect the orofacial complex. This systematic literature review aimed to find scientific evidence on the effect of pacifier sucking on orofacial structures.
METHODS: A search on MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science databases was conducted to find all pertinent articles published from inception until February 2018, based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The quality of the studies was evaluated using the risk of bias judgements in no

We tested the hypothesis that the use of a pacifier may affect the ability of some term infants to maintain effective oral breathing during prolonged nasal occlusion. Three nasal occlusion tests without a pacifier and 3 with a pacifier were alternately carried out in 20 healthy term infants (age 2-5 days). Once the infant commenced oral breathing, nasal occlusion was continued for up to 90 sec (prolonged nasal occlusion), provided the infant did not start crying and that arterial oxygen saturation (SaO(2)) did not drop to < or = 80%. The response to nasal occlusion was considered maladaptive i

Parents may be reluctant to treat the feeding disorder of a chronically ill child who exhibits distressed behavior during feeding. In this study, we identified a child with chronic medical problems and a feeding disorder who cried during feedings. We introduced treatment components sequentially to address parental concerns about crying. First, we used a pacifier to reduce crying, and then we used a flipped spoon to increase mouth clean. The results showed that a sequential approach to treatment can be effective for children with complex medical and behavioral problems.

Mucocele forms because of salivary gland mucous extravasation or retention and is usually related to trauma in the area of the lower lips. Ruptured ducts release the mucous that accumulates into adjacent tissues, leading to swelling. This report describes a large mucocele involving the lower lip, which was produced in a child by incorrect use of a pacifier. A few important concepts are discussed to help clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of this pathology.

In an infant with micrognathia, who was being evaluated after an apparent life-threatening event, respiration timed lateral radiographs showed an increase in the width of the middle airway space during inspiration from 2 mm without the pacifier to 9 mm while sucking on a pacifier. This observation is consistent with the hypothesis that the well-documented association between the pacifier use and reduced risk of sudden infant death syndrome may be at least in part related to changes in airway size.

BACKGROUND/RATIONALE: Systematic reviews on the effects of pacifiers on occlusion have highlighted the need for quality RCTs.
TRIAL DESIGN: Single region, three parallel-armed, prospective, randomized controlled trial.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the correlations between early childhood non-nutritive sucking habits and malocclusion. Specifically to test whether the use of a study pacifier has differing effects compared to other pacifiers and control, and whether the duration of pacifier use or digit sucking influence the occlusion.
PARTICIPANTS: The subjects were firstborn children, born in

The mechanical behavior of each type of pacifier on rigid structures and their various impacts on orofacial growth have yet to be discovered. The study aimed to evaluate the stress distribution over a child's palate by three types of pacifiers using finite element analysis and clinical and laboratory data. Modulus of elasticity was obtained from 30 specimens comprising 10 of each conventional (A), orthodontic (B), and breast-shaped (C) pacifiers. Tongue strength was assessed in eight 3-year-old children (kPa). A hemi-maxilla model was obtained from 2- to 3-year-old skull tomography, and the im

AIMS: The aim of this study was to describe the nutritive and non-nutritive oral sucking habits (breastfeeding, bottle use, pacifier/dummy/soother use, thumb/finger sucking) of preschoolers with and without phonological impairment, and to determine whether oral sucking habits are associated with the presence and severity of phonological impairment.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 199 Australian English-speaking preschoolers with and without phonological impairment. Preschoolers' speech was directly assessed, and parents/caregivers completed a questionnaire. Chi-square (χ2) te

BACKGROUND: The current literature suggests a link between dummy (or pacifier) use and a number of both positive and detrimental consequences. Positive consequences include soothing effect and protection from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), while negative ones include increased risk of otitis media and dental malformation. However, there is little research surrounding the impact of dummy use on the development of speech sounds.
AIMS: To investigate whether duration (in number of months) and frequency per day of dummy use have an individual or combined effect on the development of a child

"Pacifier polydactyly" is defined in babies with a large edematous postaxial duplication attached by soft-tissue stalks that contain neurovascular elements. These serve in utero as pacifiers. Imminent ischemic necrosis was induced in all three by local trauma. Simple excision is the treatment of choice.

Airway management is one of the key aspects of neonatal anesthesia, and an oropharyngeal airway is used in daily intensive care practice to relieve upper-airway obstruction. Cleft palate is among the various congenital malformations that can cause difficult airway management. We describe a syndromic infant with alobar holoprosencephaly, whose long-term airway patency was maintained with a modified infant pacifier. We would like to share our experience and contribute to the literature with the introduction of a readily available and easily-inserted apparatus.

This evidence-based study of the literature investigated the relationship between pacifier use (with and without sweetening and prolonged or short-term) and early childhood caries (ECC). The review was based on evidence from 3 main sources: a search of several electronic bibliographic databases, a review of the references from relevant studies for additional potentially relevant articles and a review of several dental textbooks. A total of 74 articles were reviewed. Of these, 8 were deemed relevant and were critically appraised according to a "causation checklist" of 13 items. The 8 studies as
