Ectopic lamellar Pacinian corpuscle within the thymus. Atypical or abnormal location?

Lamellar (Pacinian) corpuscle is a cutaneous encapsulated sensory corpuscle, mainly functioning as a rapidly adapting low-threshold mechanoreceptor with characteristic "onion skin"-like appearance. Even though the Pacinian corpuscle is typically located in the skin, histomorphologically and confirmed by using immunohistochemical methods, we have identified it within the interstitium of the thymus of a newborn with congenital heart defect. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such account ever to be published. The structure of the thymic Pacinian corpuscle was the same as the Pacinia

Velocity sensitivity of mechanotransduction in the afferent terminal underlies vibration detection in the Pacinian corpuscle.

Pacinian corpuscles are the principal detectors of high-frequency vibrations in amniotes, enabling environmental awareness, the detection of fine textures, and the manipulation of tools and objects during exploration and foraging. Corpuscles consist of a multilayered outer core enclosing a sensory inner core, which contains lamellar Schwann cells enveloping the afferent terminal at its center. In the traditional model, the outer core acts as a mechanical filter, enabling only high-frequency vibrations to reach the afferent terminal. Here, we show that the afferent terminal, not the outer core,

Painful digital Pacinian corpuscle hyperplasia following dog bite: a case report.

Digital Pacinian corpuscle hyperplasia is an extremely rare, painful condition that generally follows local trauma. We report a case of painful digital Pacinian corpuscle hyperplasia of the right index finger that was preceded by a dog bite at the same site over one and a half years ago. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first instance of a Pacinian corpuscle hyperplasia following dog bite. The literature is reviewed and immunohistological features are outlined.

Electron microscopical localization of non-specific cholinesterase activity in three principal parts of cat Pacinian corpuscles.

Non-specific cholinesterase (nCHE) activity was demonstrated histochemically on electron microscope level in 3 parts of Pacinian corpuscles from the cat mesenterium. The reaction product was abundant on the plasmic membrane of the inner core lamellae. Schwann cells of a myelinated portion of a sensory axon in Pacinian corpuscles were devoid of positive reaction to nCHE activity. These results are in agreement with those obtained in other sensory nerve endings. Therefore, the cells investing the terminal portion of an unmyelinated sensory axon are considered to be specialized Schwann cells. Fur

Macrodystrophia Lipomatosa of the Foot: A Case Report of MRI and Histologic Findings Including Pacinian Corpuscle Abnormalities.

CASE: A 37-year-old man presented with pain and macrodactyly of a toe. Imaging and histology demonstrated findings consistent with macrodystrophia lipomatosa (MDL). We compared our findings with control tissue obtained from an identical site of a fresh-frozen cadaveric foot from the same anatomical site. Pacinian corpuscles (PCs) in the MDL tissue were increased in number, size, and shape compared with the control tissue and demonstrated edematous interstitial lamellae and vacuolar degenerative change. We also document the magnetic resonance imaging findings of the PCs. CONCLUSION: Peculiar a

A histological and anatomical profile of pacinian corpuscles from Dupuytren's contracture and the expression of nerve growth factor receptor.

The etiology of Dupuytren's disease is unknown. The causes of the fibroplastic response of nodules, fibrosis of cords, and prominence of pacinian corpuscles are not evident. Histological and immunohistology differences in pacinian corpuscles from the hands of five patients with Dupuytren's disease compared with 17 Dupuytren's-free patients are presented. Histological sections of pacinian corpuscle specimens were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and immunostained for nerve growth factor receptor. The length and width of intact pacinian corpuscles were measured, and the number of layers within

Exploratory Immunohistochemical Mapping of Mechanosensitivity-Associated Ion Channel Proteins in Terminal Glial Cells of Human Meissner and Pacinian Corpuscles.

Terminal glial cells (TGCs) of cutaneous end-organ complexes have traditionally been regarded as structural and trophic elements, although they may also participate in mechanosensory processing. We performed an exploratory immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence study of mechanosensitivity-associated ion channel proteins in human Meissner and Pacinian corpuscles using archival formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded glabrous skin from 64 donors and several anatomical sites. Immunoreactivity was assessed separately in mechanoreceptor axons and TGCs. In Meissner corpuscles, TGC-associated immunorea

Pacinian Corpuscle-Inspired Strain Conversion Enables Ultrasensitive, Linear, and Broad-Range Piezoelectric Sensing for Cardiovascular Health Monitoring.

High-fidelity wrist pulse acquisition, essential for the early diagnosis and precise management of cardiovascular diseases, requires tactile sensors with both ultrasensitive and linear electromechanical responses. Biological Pacinian corpuscles transduce mechanical stimuli into localized strain via concentric lamellar architecture, enabling subtle and dynamic perception of pressure fluctuations. Inspired by the working mode of Pacinian corpuscles, this work presents a piezoelectric tactile sensor featuring a multilayer grooved architecture that transduces external pressure into localized in-pl

Pacinian corpuscle loss on routine forefoot MRI as an imaging biomarker for large-fiber sensory dysfunction in type 2 diabetic polyneuropathy.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relationship between Pacinian corpuscle (PC) count on forefoot MRI in diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy (DSP) and large-fiber sensory dysfunction as quantified by nerve conduction studies (NCS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-nine patients with type 2 diabetes and neurologically confirmed DSP (mean age 67.9 ± 13.5 years; 29 males) underwent forefoot MRI and NCS, including compound muscle and sensory nerve action potentials (cMAP, sNAP) and conduction velocities of tibial, peroneal, and sural nerves. PC counts were assessed in the subcutaneous and deep regions of

Tender papule rising on the digit: Pacinian neuroma should be considered in differential diagnosis.

Pacinian corpuscles are sensory nerve-end organs located in the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissue of the palms or soles. Pacinian neuroma is an extremely rare feature, defined as hyperplasia or hypertrophy of Pacinian corpuscles. About half of Pacinian neuromas present with point tenderness. There have been a limited number of cases reported around the world. We observed a 45-year-old woman with an 8-month history of a tender whitish papule on her left thumb tip. Histopathologically, an enlarged hypertrophic Pacinian corpuscle in subcutaneous tissue, surrounded by numerous nerve fibers, was

Human middle ear corpuscles -- A light and electron microscopic study.

The human middle ear corpuscles originally described by von Troeltsch are examined by means of light microscopy in 124 subjects, and electron microscopy in 27 subjects. While the corpuscles are not observed in all 19 individuals under age six, and in all 20 adults who had a history of suppurative otitis media, an average of six corpuscles per temporal bone is found in 98 percent of 83 adult subjects who had no history of middle ear disease. Two-thirds of the corpuscles are located in the mastoid, and the remainder in the middle ear. Often, they become bifurcated or trifurcated. Although light

Pacinioma of the cauda equina.

Lesions composed of Pacinian corpuscles or showing Pacinian corpuscle differentiation have usually been described in relation to benign tumours of the peripheral nervous system or reactive hyperplastic processes. On the other hand, mature Pacinian corpuscles have occasionally been detected as part of intraspinal lumbosacral lipomas, a rare developmental anomaly usually associated with spina bifida. A lesion of the cauda equina composed of numerous mature Pacinian corpuscles and nerve fascicles embedded in adipose tissue in association with spina bifida occulta is described in a 5-month-old mal

Sensory innervation of the human palmar aponeurosis in healthy individuals and patients with palmar fibromatosis.

The human palmar aponeurosis is involved in hand proprioception, and it contains different sensory corpuscle morphotypes that serve this role. In palmar fibromatosis (classically referred to as Dupuytren's disease), the palmar aponeurosis undergoes fibrous structural changes that, presumably, also affect the nervous system, causing altered perception. We analysed the various sensory nerve formation morphotypes in the palmar aponeuroses of healthy subjects and patients with palmar fibromatosis. To do this, we used immunohistochemistry for corpuscular constituents and the putative mechanoprotein

Pacinian neuromas and neurofibromas of the hands and fingers: a systematic review.

Tumours involving Pacinian corpuscles are rare. The literature identifies two main pathological disorders: the Pacinian corpuscle neuroma or hyperplasia and the Pacinian corpuscle neurofibroma. Published data are confusing and at times conflicting. This systematic review summarizes the available data in order to support clinicians in the differential diagnosis with other tumours responsible for unclear symptoms in the hands and fingers. We identified 67 pertinent articles. Although some similarities have been described, the two tumours have relevant differences, specifically when comparing age

On the vegetative and sensitive innervation of the Retractor clitoridis muscle in some domestic animals.

The retractor clitoridis muscle originates from the coccygeal vertebrae in the cow, ewe, goat and mare, and from the anal musculature in the sow. It terminates at the base of the clitoris. In all the species considered, a vegetative innervation was found. This was represented by isolated or grouped ganglion cells. Nervous sensitive supply was also present. This was represented by Pacinian, Pacinian-like and Golgi-Mazzoni's corpuscles, and by Krauses's end bulbs. A notable difference was found in the amount and type of these receptors. They were numerous in the sow, ewe and goat, and rare in th

Changes in mechanoreceptors in rabbits' anterior cruciate ligaments with age.

At present, a few studies have been done on the changes in the distribution, morphology and quantity of mechanoreceptors in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) with age. In this study, we observed the changes in mechanoreceptors of healthy rabbits' ACL with age. We found that rabbits' ACLs contained 5 kinds of mechanoreceptors including Ruffini corpuscles, Pacinian corpuscles, Golgitendon bodies, free nerve endings and atypical mechanoreceptors. In each ACL, free nerve endings were the most followed by Ruffini corpuscles, Pacinian corpuscles, Golgitendon bodies and atypical mechanoreceptors in th
