New Zealand is a remote country in the South Pacific Ocean. The isolation and relatively late arrival of humans into New Zealand has meant there is a recorded history of the introduction of domestic species. Honey bees (Apis mellifera) were introduced to New Zealand in 1839, and the disease American foulbrood was subsequently found in the 1870s. Paenibacillus larvae, the causative agent of American foulbrood, has been genome sequenced in other countries. We sequenced the genomes of P. larvae obtained from 164 New Zealand apiaries where American foulbrood was identified in symptomatic hives dur

INTRODUCTION: Paenibacillus species are saprophytes widely distributed in nature and rarely associated with overt human infection. Most cases have been described in people with important comorbidities and/or immunodepression. We report here what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first documented case of human disease due to Paenibacillus silvae , so far considered an exclusively environmental micro-organism.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old female patient was referred to our Unit after a 2 month history of remittent fever. Upon admission, a septic state and bacteraemia were revealed; P. s

The honeybee disease American foulbrood (AFB) is a serious problem since its causative agent (Paenibacillus larvae) has become increasingly resistant to conventional antibiotics. One of the feasible alternative treatments being used for control of this disease are plants extracts. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the effect of crude extract and fractions of Scutia buxifolia against six Paenibacillus species, including P. larvae, and its potential use for the control of AFB. In vitro activity of S. buxifolia samples against Paenibacillus species were evaluated by the disk diffusion a

Currently, the shift to a greener economy requires the prospection of new industrial processes to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Enzymatic catalysis is considered a green alternative to traditional industrial processes. Among enzymes of industrial relevance, starch-degrading enzymes, such as α-amylases, have received attention because of their enormous potential to hydrolyze starch-based materials, generating smaller sugars that can be used for the biosynthesis of chemicals of industrial relevance, such as ethanol. In the present study, a new isolate of Paenibacillus barengoltzii was obtaine

Researchers have been fascinated by the remarkable properties of naturally occurring polysaccharides in recent years. We focused on extracting, refining, and analyzing an exopolysaccharide secreted for the first time by the bacterium Paenibacillus mucilaginosus, which was isolated from agricultural soil and identified by 16S rRNA sequence techniques. The polymer's elemental composition was analyzed, focusing on three primary constituents. Carbon emerged as the dominant element, comprising 29.76% of the polymer's total mass. Hydrogen was present at 4.98%, while nitrogen comprised 3.19% of the o

INTRODUCTION: Overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) light is known to cause damage to the skin, leading to sunburn and photo-aging. Chemical sunscreen products may give rise to health risks including phototoxicity, photosensitivity, and photosensitivity. Natural polysaccharides have attracted considerable interests due to diverse biological activities.
METHODS: A novel polysaccharide isolated was purified and structurally characterized using chemical methods followed by HPLC, GLC-MS, as well as 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. The photoprotective effect of the EPS on UVB-induced damage was assessed in

Bacteria from the genus Paenibacillus make a variety of antimicrobial compounds, including lipopeptides produced by a non-ribosomal synthesis mechanism (NRPS). In the present study, we show the genomic and phenotypical characterization of Paenibacillus elgii AC13 which makes three groups of small molecules: the antimicrobial pelgipeptins and two other families of peptides that have not been described in P. elgii. A family of lipopeptides with [M + H]+ 1664, 1678, 1702, and 1717 m/z was purified from the culture cell fraction. Partial characterization revealed that they are similar to tridecapt

The emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria has placed a strain on health care systems and highlighted the need for new classes of antibiotics. Bacterial lipopeptides are secondary metabolites, generally produced by nonribosomal peptide synthetases that often exhibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Only two new structural types of antibiotics have entered the market in the last 40 years, linezolid and the bacterial lipopeptide daptomycin. A wide variety of bacteria produce lipopeptides, however Bacillus and Paenibacillus spp. in particular have yielded several potent antimicrobial lip

Four peptide antibiotics, named paenialvin A-D, were isolated from Paenibacillus alvei DSM 29. Mass spectrum analysis determined the molecular masses of paenialvin A-D to be 1891, 1875, 1877, and 1923 Da, respectively. Tandem mass spectra and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) were used to elucidate their chemical structures. Paenialvin A-D showed antimicrobial activity against most strains that were tested, including methicillin-resistant Staphalococcus aureus, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Loktanella hongkongensis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In particular, the mi

An extracellular polysaccharide was purified from culture supernatants of Paenibacillus jamilae CP-7, a gram-positive bacillus that was isolated from compost prepared with olive mill wastewaters. The extracellular polysaccharide was produced under aerobic conditions in a medium containing olive mill wastewaters (80% [vol/vol]). This exopolymer had a low level of acute toxicity when it is administered to BALB/c mice by the intraperitoneal route. Interesting immunomodulatory effects were detected when mice were given 10 mg of exopolysaccharide per kg of body weight; the proliferative responses o

Neonatal infections due to Paenibacillus species have increasingly been reported over the last few years. We performed a structured literature review of human Paenibacillus infections in infants and adults to compare the epidemiology of infections between these distinct patient populations. Thirty-nine reports describing 176 infections met our inclusion criteria and were included. There were 37 Paenibacillus infections occurring in adults caused by 23 species. The clinical presentations of infections were quite variable. In contrast, infections in infants were caused by only 3 species: P. thia

BACKGROUND: Paenibacillus constitutes a genus of gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria that act as potentially opportunistic pathogens. With only a few documented case studies to date, Paenibacillus species are rarely the cause of a disease in humans.
CASE SUMMARY: We report a case involving a 64-year-old male with known mild mitral regurgitation, who presented with fever and dyspnoea. Initially treated with empirical antibiotics, his blood cultures cultivated Paenibacillus thiaminolyticus, a previously unreported cause of endocarditis. Transoesophageal echocardiography

Paenibacilli are gram-variable, endospore-forming bacteria that occupy various ecologic niches. These microorganisms have been known to infect humans occasionally at various anatomic sites. However, in humans, as well as in other vertebrate animals, the relationship between disease and isolation of Paenibacillus spp. remains poorly understood. We report here a case of infection in an adult Poodle dog. The animal had nodules in the lungs and multifocal osteolytic expansile bone lesions. From bone, Paenibacillus amylolyticus was recovered by culture and identified by MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy

Paenibacillus mucilaginosus is a beneficial bacterium widely applied as a biofertilizer in agriculture. To date, genomic information on this species remains limited; however, no genome assemblies from Vietnam have been reported. This work presented the draft genome of P. mucilaginosus YWY-5.1, a promising strain with strong chitin-degrading capability and agricultural potential, isolated from Yok Don National Park, Vietnam, using Illumina technology. Results showed that the assembled genome comprised 48 contigs with 4,076,146 bp and 73.8% GC-content. Genome annotation identified 3,611 protein-

INTRODUCTION: Paenibacillus polymyxa is an essential bio-control bacterium capable of producing numerous antagonistic compounds with potential usefulness. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a significant bacterial strain that infects hospitals and communities, exhibiting considerable antibiotic resistance and posing a substantial threat to human health, thereby becoming a major bio-safety concern worldwide. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial properties and mechanisms of the secondary metabolites of P. polymyxa (MEZ6) against MRSA.
METHODS: This s

Recent decarbonization efforts have led to interests in producing more bio-based chemicals. One attractive compound produced biochemically is the platform chemical known as 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO). In this work a mild alkaline pretreatment using sodium carbonate was performed on corn stover (CS) and switchgrass (SG) to generate hydrolysates for fermentation with the 2,3-BDO producer bacteria strain Paenibacillius polymyxa. Enzymatic hydrolysis performed on the pretreated CS and SG produced theoretical sugar yields of 80 % and 95 % for glucose and xylose, respectively. Fermentations with P. po

Postinfectious hydrocephalus (PIH), which often follows neonatal sepsis, is the most common cause of pediatric hydrocephalus worldwide, yet the microbial pathogens underlying this disease remain to be elucidated. Characterization of the microbial agents causing PIH would enable a shift from surgical palliation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulation to prevention of the disease. Here, we examined blood and CSF samples collected from 100 consecutive infant cases of PIH and control cases comprising infants with non-postinfectious hydrocephalus in Uganda. Genomic sequencing of samples was under
