Pressure pain thresholds and thermal nociceptive thresholds in chronic tension-type headache.

The nociceptive thresholds to mechanical and thermal stimuli in patients with chronic tension-type headache were compared. Palpation of pericranial tenderness was performed in 50 patients and a total tenderness score (TTS) was calculated. Palpation was repeated, and pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) were determined with a pressure algometer in the temporal and occipital regions. In 32 of the patients, pain thresholds for heat and cold and limens for detection of non-painful temperature changes were determined in the hands and the temporal regions. Twenty-four healthy volunteers served as control

Dominance-submissiveness cues modulate pain threshold for mechanical pressure.

Acute pain sensation is an inherently negative but adaptive experience; however, research on pain sensitivity shows that simple contextual cues can effectively attenuate the pain. In this study, we sought to investigate how dominance cues, manipulated as vertical spatial (i.e., height) distance between participants and experimenter, affect participants' pain sensitivity. Positioning participants in a spatially higher position relative to the experimenter was aimed to induce a feeling of dominance in participants. Conversely, a feeling of submissiveness was induced by placing the experimenter i

Possible involvement of ghrelin on pain threshold in obesity.

Pain threshold (or perception) can increase or decrease according to some factors like gender, depression or individual differences. Also, previous studies showed that pain threshold can change in obesity but, these studies on the effects of obesity on pain threshold have given controversial results. In the obese people who were exposed to pain stimulation to determined pain threshold, an increased pain threshold was observed. Contrarily, in the studies using electrophysiological test had lower pain threshold, which indicates a reverse correlation between degree of overweight and the threshold

Does melatonin modulate beta-endorphin, corticosterone, and pain threshold?

Converging lines of evidence suggest that the pineal hormone, melatonin, may regulate changes in pain threshold by modulating fluctuations in opioid receptor expression and levels of beta-endorphin (beta-END). This study investigated whether the circadian oscillation in plasma melatonin is involved in the modulation of plasma beta-END immunoreactivity (beta-END-ir), and whether fluctuations in pain threshold measured using the hotplate test are contingent upon the fluctuation of these two hormones in Rattus Norvegicus. The role of melatonin was explored using light-induced functional pinealect

Quantification of abdominal wall pain using pain pressure threshold algometry in patients with chronic pelvic pain.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is a syndrome involving 1 or more pain generating organs in the pelvis, which includes pain from the lower anterior abdominal wall. This entity has been termed myofascial pain syndrome (MFPS), but its characteristics, definition, and quantification have not been well described. In this study, pain pressure threshold (PPT) testing of the lower anterior abdominal wall in CPP patients was performed to determine the range and distribution of values at each site, and the clinical utility of using PPT in a definition of MFPS. METHODS: Fifty-six patients evaluate

The normative values of pain thresholds in healthy Taiwanese.

OBJECTIVE: Quantitative sensory testing is widely used in clinical and research settings to assess the sensory functions of healthy subjects and patients. It is of importance to establish normative values in a healthy population to provide reference for studies involving patients. Given the absence of normative values for pain thresholds in Taiwan, the aim of this study was to report the normative values for future reference in the Taiwanese population and compare the differences between male and female participants. METHODS: Healthy adults without any chronic or acute pain condition were rec

Pain threshold in humans. A study with the pressure algometer.

Pain perception threshold (PPT) in the head was assessed with a pressure algometer in 40 control individuals (24 females and 16 males). Threshold was assessed at 11 symmetrical points on each side. The average threshold for each side was calculated, and differences between two sides were evaluated with an asymmetry index. Subjects were studied in relation to age and sex, and any difference in the symmetrical perception of pain on the head was registered. The deltoid muscle was chosen as a reference point, since it is rarely a site of trigger points. The reproducibility of the method was satisf

Pressure and cold pain threshold reference values in a pain-free older adult population.

BACKGROUND: More sex-specific pain sensitivity normative values from population-based cohorts in pain-free older adults are required. The aims of this study were (1) to provide sex- and age-specific normative values of pressure and cold pain thresholds in older pain-free adults and (2) to examine the association of potential correlates of pain sensitivity with pain threshold values. METHODS: This study investigated sex-specific pressure (lumbar spine, tibialis anterior, neck and dorsal wrist) and cold (dorsal wrist) pain threshold estimates for older pain-free adults aged 41-70 years. Pathophysiology of Nociception and Rare Genetic Disorders with Increased Pain Threshold or Pain Insensitivity.

Pain and nociception are different phenomena. Nociception is the result of complex activity in sensory pathways. On the other hand, pain is the effect of interactions between nociceptive processes, and cognition, emotions, as well as the social context of the individual. Alterations in the nociceptive route can have different genesis and affect the entire sensorial process. Genetic problems in nociception, clinically characterized by reduced or absent pain sensitivity, compose an important chapter within pain medicine. This chapter encompasses a wide range of very rare diseases. Several genes

Pressure Pain Threshold as a Predictor of Acute Postoperative Pain Following Total Joint Arthroplasty.

OBJECTIVES: Acute pain in the postoperative period after total joint arthroplasty (TJA) has a significant effect on early rehabilitation, hospital length of stay, and the development of chronic pain. Consequently, efforts have been made to predict the occurrence of postoperative pain using preoperative and intraoperative factors. In this study, we tested the usefulness of preoperative pressure pain threshold (PPT) values in the prediction of three outcomes for patients who underwent TJA: visual analog scale pain scores, hospital length of stay, and opioid consumption.
