Direct detection of the mercury-nitrogen bond in the thymine-Hg(II)-thymine base-pair with (199)Hg NMR spectroscopy.

We have observed the 1-bond (199)Hg-(15)N J-coupling ((1)J((199)Hg,(15)N) = 1050 Hz) within the Hg(II)-mediated thymine-thymine base pair (T-Hg(II)-T). This strikingly large (1)J((199)Hg,(15)N) is the first one for canonical sp(2)-nitrogen atoms, which can be a sensitive structure-probe of N-mercurated compounds and a direct evidence for N-mercuration.

A Highly Reactive Geminal P/B Frustrated Lewis Pair: Expanding the Scope to C-X (X=Cl, Br) Bond Activation.

The geminal frustrated Lewis pair tBu2 PCH2 B(Fxyl)2 (1; Fxyl=3,5-(CF3 )2 C6 H3 ) is accessible in 65 % yield from tBu2 PCH2 Li and (Fxyl)2 BF. According to NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography, 1 is monomeric both in solution and in the solid state. The intramolecular P⋅⋅⋅B distance of 2.900(5) Å and the full planarity of the borane site exclude any significant P/B interaction. Compound 1 readily activates a broad variety of substrates including H2 , EtMe2 SiH, CO2 /CS2 , Ph2 CO, and H3 CCN. Terminal alkynes react with heterolysis of the C-H bond. Haloboranes give cyclic adducts with st

Loss of oxytocin receptor function disrupts neural signatures of pair bonding and fidelity in the nucleus accumbens.

Enduring relationships dramatically shape behaviors by promoting affiliation between familiar individuals; however, the neural mechanisms driving attachments remain unclear. Oxytocin receptor (Oxtr) signaling in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) reinforces pair bond formation in socially monogamous prairie voles. How Oxtr influences NAc activity during affiliative behaviors with partners and rejection of strangers is unknown. Using in vivo fiber photometry, we demonstrate that genetic loss of Oxtr sex-specifically disrupts attachment behaviors and associated NAc activity. In females, loss of Oxtr re

Characterizing Microglia Morphology in the Frontal Cortex of Pair-Bonded and Unpaired Prairie Voles (Microtus ochrogaster).

Microtus ochrogaster, monogamous prairie voles, serve as translational animal models for studying monogamy and pair bonding. Microglia, the resident immune cells of the brain, are one of several cell types still poorly understood in non-classical animal models including prairie voles. Microglia are known to play mechanistic roles in mediating social behaviors using inflammatory signaling, but the relationship between microglia reactivity and pair bonding has not yet been investigated. The present study first developed a robust protocol for quantitative histological visualization of microglia i

The impact of sexually abstaining groups on persistence of sexually transmitted infections in populations with ephemeral pair bonds.

Individuals often stop reproducing some time before they die. In this paper we compose and analyze a logistic two-sex population model in which individuals form pairs just to mate (i.e. pair bonds are ephemeral) and later move on to sexually abstaining groups. Using this model, we study the impact of sexually abstaining groups on persistence of a benign sexually transmitted infection (STI) in populations with such ephemeral pair bonds. We observe that the presence of sexually abstaining groups cannot prevent an STI from invasion or eliminate it when already present if the transition rates to t

Oxytocin receptor antagonist reverses the blunting effect of pair bonding on fear learning in monogamous prairie voles.

Social relationships among spouses, family members, and friends are known to affect physical and mental health. In particular, long-lasting bonds between socio-sexual partners have profound effects on cognitive, social, emotional, and physical well-being. We have previously reported that pair bonding in monogamous prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) is prevented by a single prolonged stress (SPS) paradigm, which causes behavioral and endocrine symptoms resembling post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients in rats (Arai et al., 2016). Since fear memory function is crucial for anxiety-relat

Ion-Pair Halogen Bonds in 2-Halo-Functionalized Imidazolium Chloride Receptors: Substituent and Solvent Effects.

The interaction of 2-halo-functionalized imidazolium derivatives (n-X+ ; X=Cl, Br, I) with a chloride anion through ion-pair halogen bonds (n-X⋅Cl) was studied by means of DFT and ab initio calculations. A method benchmark was performed on 2-bromo-1H-imidazol-3-ium in association with chloride (1-Br⋅Cl); MP2 yielded the best results when compared with CCSD(T) calculations. The interaction energies (ΔE) in the gas phase are high and, although the electrostatic interaction is strong owing to the ion-pair nature of the system, large X⋅⋅⋅Cl- Wiberg bond orders and contributions from charge transfe

Extended amygdala corticotropin-releasing hormone neurons regulate sexually dimorphic changes in pair bond formation following social defeat in prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster).

The neurobiological mechanisms underlying the connection between anxiety brought on by social stressors and the negative impact on relationship formation have remained elusive. In order to address this question, we used the social defeat model in the socially monogamous prairie vole to investigate the impact of this stress on pair bond formation. Social defeat experience inhibited partner preference formation in males but promoted preference in females. Furthermore, pair bonding increased corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) expression in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) in male

Lesions of the vomeronasal organ disrupt mating-induced pair bonding in female prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster).

The prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) is a highly social, monogamous species and displays pair bonding that can be assessed by the presence of selective affiliation with the familiar partner versus a conspecific stranger. In female prairie voles, exposure to a male or to male sensory cues is essential for estrus induction, and the subsequent mating facilitates pair bond formation. In the present study, we examined the role of the vomeronasal organ (VNO) in estrus induction and pair bonding in female prairie voles. VNO lesions did not alter olfaction mediated by the main olfactory system, but

Oxidoreductase disulfide bond proteins DsbA and DsbB form an active redox pair in Chlamydia trachomatis, a bacterium with disulfide dependent infection and development.

Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular bacterium with a distinctive biphasic developmental cycle that alternates between two distinct cell types; the extracellular infectious elementary body (EB) and the intracellular replicating reticulate body (RB). Members of the genus Chlamydia are dependent on the formation and degradation of protein disulfide bonds. Moreover, disulfide cross-linking of EB envelope proteins is critical for the infection phase of the developmental cycle. We have identified in C. trachomatis a homologue of the Disulfide Bond forming membrane protein Escherichia

Generalized Valence Bond-Based Block-Correlated Coupled Cluster Theory with up to Five-Pair Correlation for Accurate Static Correlation of Strongly Correlated Systems.

Generalized valence bond-based block-correlated coupled cluster theory with up to five-pair correlation (GVB-BCCC5) has been presented for the first time to describe the electronic structures of strongly correlated systems with singlet ground states. Several efficient techniques have been employed to make GVB-BCCC5 calculations practical for strongly correlated systems. We then apply this method to investigate various systems, including potential energy surfaces of a hydrogen cuboid lattice and a phosphorus cluster (P4); relative energies of two isomers for C8 and V2H2; and the bond dissociati

A Phosphinine-Derived 1-Phospha-7-Bora-Norbornadiene: Frustrated Lewis Pair Type Activation of Triple Bonds.

Salt metathesis of 1-methyl-2,4,6-triphenylphosphacyclohexadienyl lithium and chlorobis(pentafluorophenyl)borane affords a 1-phospha-7-bora-norbornadiene derivative 2. The C≡N triple bonds of nitriles insert into the P-B bond of 2 with concomitant C-B bond cleavage, whereas the C≡C bonds of phenylacetylenes react with 2 to form λ4 -phosphabarrelenes. Even though 2 must formally be regarded as a classical Lewis adduct, the C≡N and C≡C activation processes observed (and the mild conditions under which they occur) are reminiscent of the reactivity of frustrated Lewis pairs. Indeed, NMR and comput

Ruthenium-Catalyzed Transfer Hydrogenation for C-C Bond Formation: Hydrohydroxyalkylation and Hydroaminoalkylation via Reactant Redox Pairs.

Merging the chemistry of transfer hydrogenation and carbonyl or imine addition, a broad new family of redox-neutral or reductive hydrohydroxyalkylations and hydroaminomethylations have been developed. In these processes, hydrogen redistribution between alcohols and π-unsaturated reactants is accompanied by C-C bond formation, enabling direct conversion of lower alcohols to higher alcohols. Similarly, hydrogen redistribution between amines to π-unsaturated reactants results in direct conversion of lower amines to higher amines. Alternatively, equivalent products of hydrohydroxyalkylation and hy

Aromatic and aliphatic CH hydrogen bonds fight for chloride while competing alongside ion pairing within triazolophanes.

Triazolophanes are used as the venue to compete an aliphatic propylene CH hydrogen-bond donor against an aromatic phenylene one. Longer aliphatic C-H...Cl(-) hydrogen bonds were calculated from the location of the chloride within the propylene-based triazolophane. The gas-phase energetics of chloride binding (ΔG(bind) , ΔH(bind) , ΔS(bind) ) and the configurational entropy (ΔS(config) ) were computed by taking all low-energy conformations into account. Comparison between the phenylene- and propylene-based triazolophanes shows the computed gas-phase free energy of binding decreased from ΔG(bind

Do traditional, chlorine-shared, and ion-pair halogen bonds exist? An ab initio investigation of FCl:CNX complexes.

Ab initio MP2/aug'-cc-pVTZ calculations have been carried out to determine the structures, binding energies, and bonding of complexes FCl:CNX, with X = CN, NC, NO(2), F, CF(3), Cl, Br, H, CCF, CCH, CH(3), SiH(3), Li, and Na. Equation-of-motion coupled cluster calculations have also been carried out to determine the coupling constants (1)J(F-Cl), (1X)J(Cl-C), and (2X)J(F-C) across these halogen bonds. As the strength of the base is systematically increased, the nature of the halogen bond changes from traditional, to chlorine-shared, to ion-pair. The type of halogen bond present in a complex can

Electronic Interactions Between the Receptor-Binding Domain of Omicron Variants and Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2: A Novel Amino Acid-Amino Acid Bond Pair Concept.

SARS-CoV-2 remains a severe threat to worldwide public health, particularly as the virus continues to evolve and diversify into variants of concern (VOCs). Among these VOCs, Omicron variants exhibit unique phenotypic traits, such as immune evasion, transmissibility, and severity, due to numerous spike protein mutations and the rapid subvariant evolution. These Omicron subvariants have more than 15 mutations in the receptor-binding domain (RBD), a region of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein that is important for recognition and binding with the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) human receptor.

Hydrogen-Bonding-Guided Molecular Pair Suppresses Self-Aggregation for Uniform Passivation of Efficient Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells.

Surface passivation is critical for high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs), yet achieving a uniform molecular layer is hindered by uncontrolled molecular aggregation, thereby limiting passivation efficiency. Here, we introduce an aggregation control strategy using two complementary molecules, 4-(trifluoromethyl)benzamidinium chloride (4BH) and piperazinium iodide (PI), directed by mutual N-H···F hydrogen bonding to form a uniform passivation layer. It pre-empts the disordered self-aggregation for each component alone, yielding a pinhole-free layer with homogeneous surface potential and

Aging leads to sex-dependent effects on pair bonding and increased number of oxytocin-producing neurons in monogamous prairie voles.

Pair bonds powerfully modulate health, which becomes particularly important when facing the detrimental effects of aging. To examine the impact of aging on relationship formation and response to loss, we examined behavior in naive 6-, 12-, and 18-month male and female prairie voles, a monogamous species that forms mating-based pair bonds. We found that older males (18-months) bonded quicker than younger voles, while similarly aged female voles increased partner directed affiliative behaviors. Supporting sex differences in bonding behaviors, we found that males were more likely to sample both p

Using Hybrid PDI-Fe3O4 Nanoparticles for Capturing Aliphatic Alcohols: Halogen Bonding vs. Lone Pair-π Interactions.

In this study, Fe3O4 nanoparticles (FeNPs) decorated with halogenated perylene diimides (PDIs) have been used for capturing VOCs (volatile organic compounds) through noncovalent binding. Concretely, we have used tetrachlorinated/brominated PDIs as well as a nonhalogenated PDI as a reference system. On the other hand, methanol, ethanol, propanol, and butanol were used as VOCs. Experimental studies along with theoretical calculations (the BP86-D3/def2-TZVPP level of theory) pointed to two possible and likely competitive binding modes (lone pair-π through the π-acidic surface of the PDI and a hal

Photo-promoted Skeletal Rearrangement of Phosphine-Borane Frustrated Lewis Pairs Involving Cleavage of Unstrained C-C σ-Bonds.

An unprecedented photo-promoted skeletal rearrangement reaction of phosphine-borane frustrated Lewis pairs, o-(borylaryl)phosphines, involving cleavage of an unstrained sp2 C-sp3 C σ-bond is reported. The reaction realizes an efficient synthesis of cyclic phosphonium borate compounds. The reaction mechanism via a boranorcaradiene intermediate is proposed based on theoretical calculations. This work sheds light on the new photoreactivity of phosphine-borane FLPs.
