Functionally segregated neural substrates for arbitrary audiovisual paired-association learning.

To clarify the neural substrates and their dynamics during crossmodal association learning, we conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during audiovisual paired-association learning of delayed matching-to-sample tasks. Thirty subjects were involved in the study; 15 performed an audiovisual paired-association learning task, and the remainder completed a control visuo-visual task. Each trial consisted of the successive presentation of a pair of stimuli. Subjects were asked to identify predefined audiovisual or visuo-visual pairs by trial and error. Feedback for each trial was given

Sensitivity and specificity of the CANTAB Paired Associates Learning test for identifying mild cognitive impairment.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a stage between normal cognition and dementia, and timely diagnosis of this condition offers the opportunity for effective interventions to slow down the progression to dementia. The Mini-Mental Status Exam (MMSE) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) are widely used tests for MCI screening. The Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) is a computer-based cognitive battery designed to reduce the influence of language and the possibility of examiner error. This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of CANTAB in patients

Verbal paired associates learning lateralizes left hippocampal sclerosis in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Left hippocampal sclerosis (HS) is associated with verbal-specific memory impairment. This association is well established for word list learning tasks, and there is some evidence that this may also be relevant to verbal paired associates learning (PAL), though the evidence is limited. We aimed to evaluate the utility of verbal PAL as a marker for left HS, compare this with word list learning, and derive cutoff scores to facilitate clinical application. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) and PAL scores obtained from 116 surgically naïve tem

Clinical and treatment-related predictors of cognition in bipolar disorder: focus on visual paired associative learning.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with impairment in cognitive domains such as verbal memory and executive functions. However, visual paired associative learning (PAL) has been far less researched. Neurocognitive dysfunction in BD patients has been related to several clinical factors, but data on the effect of medication are relatively scarce and inconsistent. The aim of our study was to explore the effect of clinical and treatment-related parameters on executive functions and visual memory/learning, including PAL, in BD. Cognitive performance of 60 bipolar I patients and 30 healthy subjects

Enhanced audiovisual associative pair learning in migraine without aura in adult patients: An unexpected finding.

BACKGROUND: Altered sensory processing in migraine has been demonstrated by several studies in unimodal, and especially visual, tasks. While there is some limited evidence hinting at potential alterations in multisensory processing among migraine sufferers, this aspect remains relatively unexplored. This study investigated the interictal cognitive performance of migraine patients without aura compared to matched controls, focusing on associative learning, recall, and transfer abilities through the Sound-Face Test, an audiovisual test based on the principles of the Rutgers Acquired Equivalence

A Study of the Brain Network Connectivity in Visual-Word Pairing Associative Learning and Episodic Memory Reactivating Task.

Episodic memory allows a person to recall and mentally reexperience specific episodes from one's personal past. Studies of episodic memory are of great significance for the diagnosis and the exploration of the mechanism of memory generation. Most of the current studies focus on certain brain regions and pay less attention to the interrelationship between multiple brain regions. To explore the interrelationship in the brain network, we use an open fMRI dataset to construct the brain functional connectivity and effective connectivity network. We establish a binary directed network of the memory

Impaired Performance of the Q175 Mouse Model of Huntington's Disease in the Touch Screen Paired Associates Learning Task.

Cognitive disturbances often predate characteristic motor dysfunction in individuals with Huntington's disease (HD) and place an increasing burden on the HD patients and caregivers with the progression of the disorder. Therefore, application of maximally translational cognitive tests to animal models of HD is imperative for the development of treatments that could alleviate cognitive decline in human patients. Here, we examined the performance of the Q175 mouse knock-in model of HD in the touch screen version of the paired associates learning (PAL) task. We found that 10-11-month-old heterozyg

Associative Learning in Subclinical Hypothyroidism at Different Ranges of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone: A Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) Study of Visual Paired Association Learning Task.

BACKGROUND: Associative learning deficits are constantly found in subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH). Despite achieving normal thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, a considerable number of patients undergoing levothyroxine (LT-4) treatment frequently complain about memory retrieval. The Paired Association Learning (PAL) task involves computerised testing on the CANTAB- Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery, also considered a screening tool for Alzheimer's disease (AD). PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the impact of different levels of TSH on visual associative learnin

Cerebellar Paired Associative Stimulation Enhances Motor Learning and Modulates Cerebellar Output in a Timing- and Task-Dependent Manner.

Cerebellar paired associative stimulation (cPAS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation protocol that combines peripheral nerve stimulation with cerebellar transcranial magnetic stimulation to induce plasticity in the cerebellar-cortical pathway. Previous evidence suggested that cPAS delivered at a 25ms interstimulus interval (cPAS25) can modulate cerebellar-primary motor cortex connectivity, as reflected by changes in cerebellar-brain inhibition (CBI). However, its behavioural relevance remains unclear. To investigate this issue, we conducted two experiments in young healthy adults using a within-

Hippocampal dysfunction in patients with mild cognitive impairment: a functional neuroimaging study of a visuospatial paired associates learning task.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients report memory problems greater than those normally expected with ageing, but do not fulfil criteria for clinically probable Alzheimer's disease. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that impaired performance on the Paired Associates Learning (PAL) test from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) may be sensitive and specific for early and differential diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. We adapted the basic CANTAB PAL task for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in order to examine the functional brain deficits, at encodin

Visual memory impairment in medication-free obsessive-compulsive disorder without psychiatric comorbidity: A CANTAB paired associates learning study.

A well-established feature of Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is distrust of one's own perception, with two principal contributing factors proposed: impaired objective visual memory and reduced memory confidence. Of these, whether a genuine objective visual memory impairment exists in OCD remains debated, as findings across individual studies are inconsistent, partly because most studies have not adequately controlled for psychotropic medication or psychiatric comorbidity. Focusing on objective visual memory, this study aimed to clarify disorder-specific visual memory characteristics in OC

Paired associates learning is disrupted after unilateral parietal lobe controlled cortical impact in rats: A trial-by-trial behavioral analysis.

Approximately 60-70 million people suffer from traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year. Animal models continue to be paramount in understanding mechanisms of cellular dysfunction and testing new treatments for TBI. Enhancing the translational potential of novel interventions therefore necessitates testing pre-clinical intervention strategies with clinically relevant cognitive assays. This study used a unilateral parietal lobe controlled cortical impact (CCI) model of TBI and tested rats on a touchscreen-based Paired Associates Learning (PAL) task, which is part of the Cambridge Neuropsychologic

Associative learning in the dengue vector mosquito, Aedes aegypti: avoidance of a previously attractive odor or surface color that is paired with an aversive stimulus.

Associative learning has been shown in a variety of insects, including the mosquitoes Culex quinquefasciatus and Anopheles gambiae. This study demonstrates associative learning for the first time in Aedes aegypti, an important vector of dengue, yellow fever and chikungunya viruses. This species prefers to rest on dark surfaces and is attracted to the odor of 1-octen-3-ol. After training in which a dark surface alone or a dark surface with odor was paired with electric shock, mosquitoes avoided the previously attractive area. The association was stronger when odor was included in training, was

Effects of the T-type calcium channel antagonist Z944 on paired associates learning and locomotor activity in rats treated with the NMDA receptor antagonist MK-801.

RATIONALE: Currently available antipsychotics are unsatisfactory given their side effects and limited efficacy for the cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia. Many currently available drugs, such as haloperidol, are T-type calcium channel antagonists in addition to their well-established antagonism of dopamine D2 receptors. Thus, preclinical research into the effects of T-type calcium channel antagonists/blockers in behavioral assays related to schizophrenia may inform novel therapeutic strategies. OBJECTIVES: We explored the effects of a recently developed highly selective T-type calcium channe

Effect of mineralocorticoid receptor blockade on hippocampal-dependent memory in adults with obesity.

OBJECTIVE: The hippocampus is crucial for paired-associate learning. Obesity is associated with increased mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) activity in peripheral and possibly central tissues, decreased hippocampal size in humans, and impaired hippocampal learning in rodents. The MR is expressed in hippocampal neurons, and MR blockade improves hippocampal learning in obese animals. The goal of the study was to determine whether MR blockade would modulate paired-associate learning in men and women with obesity. METHODS: Men and women ages 20-61 years with BMI between 30-45 kg/m(2) were randomly

Orthographic learning in developmental surface and phonological dyslexia.

Phonological decoding skill has been proposed to be key to successful sight word learning (orthographic learning). However, little is known about how children with phonological dyslexia, who have impaired phonological decoding, acquire sight words, or why children with surface dyslexia can have normal phonological decoding skill yet impaired sight word acquisition. This study addressed this issue by investigating orthographic learning in two 10-year-old children: S.D., with a reading profile of surface dyslexia, and P.D., with a reading profile of phonological dyslexia. They participated in tw
