Salivary gland tumors are rare, constituting approximately 0.5% of pediatric malignancies, yet account for over 50% of malignant salivary gland neoplasms, of which a majority are mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MECs). We present a case of MEC involving the palatal minor salivary gland of an adolescent patient successfully reconstructed using buccal myomucosal flap. The subject presented as a 17-year-old male with a painless left hard palatal mass found to have imaging suspicious for minor salivary gland tumor and punch biopsy consistent with a low-grade MEC. The subject underwent wide local excisio

Palatal perforation, a diagnostically complex condition, arises from diverse etiologies including neoplasms, infections, or inflammatory disorders. Patients often experience dysphagia, dysarthria, and social distress due to nasal regurgitation. We report a 22 year-old cachectic woman with isolated palatal perforation secondary to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). She presented with a 2-month history of a painless, progressive midline ulcer unresponsive to antibiotics, culminating in a 2 cm perforation. Biopsies revealed necrotic tissue, fungal elements, and atypical lymphocytes; immunohis

Mesenchymal neoplasms of salivary gland including adipocytes are relatively uncommon entity classified as monophasic and biphasic. Sialolipoma, a biphasic mesenchymal salivary gland neoplasm, with a prominent vascularity designated as sialoangiolipoma (SAL) is a recently discussed entity with debates on the hamartomatous nature of the lesion. We have endorsed the hamartomatous nature through evaluating the immunoexpression of Ki-67 and endoglin in SAL in hard palate of a 60-year-old patient. To the best of our knowledge, this would be the second case of SAL in hard palate in a global platform.

Malignant sublingual gland neoplasms are rare, early-stage neoplasms presenting as painless non-ulcerated masses in the antero-lateral floor of the mouth. The majority of patients present with advanced disease, with symptoms of pain or anaesthesia of the tongue. Malignant minor salivary gland neoplasms are more common, the majority (>80%) of which present in the oral cavity, most frequently in the palatal area, as painless masses or as obstructive symptoms in the head and neck region. The most frequent pathologies are adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (>85%), with the major

BACKGROUND: Palatal perforations not associated with syndromes or neoplasms are rare lesions whose frequency has increased recently. However, their clinical and demographic characteristics have not been fully described. Therefore, this report aimed to establish the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with non-syndromic and non-neoplastic palatal perforations.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The file of an oral medicine teaching clinic from January 2004 to December 2018 was reviewed to identify and isolate all cases with a diagnosis of palatal perforation. Cases with a diagnosis of pala

The presence of numerous minor salivary gland tissues in the posterior part of hard palate increases the possibility of salivary gland neoplasms. Minor salivary gland tumor accounts for about 15% of all the salivary gland neoplasms, of which mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) accounts for about 35.9%. Although a wide range of the differential diagnosis is made by the clinicians toward a single palatal swelling without any other specific changes on inspection, a prompt "histopathological" diagnosis is of utmost importance in case of lesions like "MEC." By taking the case study of a 23-year-old male

Seropositive patients quite often demonstrate symptoms in the area of the head and neck, among which should be mentioned opportunistic infections, neoplasms--Kaposi's sarcoma, as well as progressive generalized lymphadenopathy. These patients quite often complain about difficulties in breathing through the nose as well as of recrudescent auricular inflammation. The authors present descriptions of a great pharyngeal and palatal tonsillar hypertrophy in a twenty-one-year-old patient infected with HIV virus.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common salivary gland neoplasm, accounting for a significant proportion of both major and minor salivary gland tumors. While it most frequently arises in the parotid or submandibular glands, it can occasionally present as an intraoral mass over the palate or lip when originating from the minor salivary glands. A palatal pleomorphic adenoma typically presents as a painless, gradually enlarging mass on the posterior lateral aspect of the palate. This article discusses a case of a palatal pleomorphic adenoma, which was successfully managed with surgical excision.

Myoepithelioma is a rare, benign salivary neoplasm, most frequently located in the salivary gland; extrasalivary cases most commonly occur in the palate. This tumor is prone to recurrence. We present a case of recurrent myoepithelioma in the nasal cavity with a palatal fistula treated both by a palatal approach and a piriform apertural approach. The combination of these approaches widens the surgical space, allowing removal of the mass. It is important not only to excise the mass but also to allow for reconstruction.

Schwannoma, or neurilemmoma, is a benign neoplasm of Schwann cells that is extremely rare in the soft palate. Herein we present a case of a soft palate schwannoma presenting with an ulcerated surface and purplish colour in a 12 year-old girl. This report also introduces a successful surgical technique for coverage of the defect left by surgery.

BACKGROUND: A few cases of oral schwannomas in paediatric patients have appeared in the literature so far; however, there are no studies focusing solely on paediatric oral schwannomas. The aim of this study is to report a case of palatal schwannoma in a young female patient and review the pertinent literature on oral schwannomas in paediatric patients.
CASE REPORT: A 12-year-old girl presented with a growing swelling of 2 weeks duration on the hard palate. With a provisional diagnosis of a salivary gland neoplasm an incisional biopsy was performed under local anesthesia and the histologic exa

Soft palate neoplasms are relatively rare and their care requires not only an adequate surgical removal but also a post-treatment rehabilitation. In this article the authors after having considered the importance of the soft palate function on the individual's ability to shallow and speak, describe one case of squamous cell carcinoma of the soft palate and treated with surgery followed by prosthetic rehabilitation. Especially it is pointed out the utility of a palatal obturator in the care of deleterious esthetic and psychological aspect of the residual anatomical defect, considering the possi

Sclerosing polycystic adenosis (SPA) is a rare neoplasm of salivary glands, with a striking resemblance to the benign fibrocystic disease of the breast. The most common site of occurrence is the parotid gland. However, submandibular gland, minor salivary glands, and buccal mucosa may also be affected. It shows a slight female predilection and occurs over a wide age range. The exact nature of the disease is unknown but is postulated to be a neoplasm recently. The treatment is effective by localized surgical excision, and recurrence is rare. To the best of our knowledge, there is only one case r

Cocaine abuse and the consequent prevalence of the damage associated with it have increased in the global population. The damage depends on the route of administration, where an important sequel of snorting is perforation of the nasal septum and palate. Necrosis of the palate, meanwhile, is also the manifestation of other diseases such as tertiary syphilis, necrotizing sialometaplasia and malignant neoplasms. The differential diagnosis of such lesions is important for determining appropriate treatment. A case of an ulcerated lesion in the palate of a cocaine-using patient whose diagnosis was n

Ewing sarcoma is a highly malignant neoplasm, which very rarely involves the head and neck region. Only a few cases have been reported in the maxila or palate. This case is being reported for its rarity. A patient presented to the Department of Oral Pathology, Faculty of Dental Sciences, CSM Medical University, Lucknow, India, with a lesion expanding the nasal cavity and posteriorly reaching up to the anterior border of nasopharynx and inferiorly causing the destruction of the hard palate extending into the oral cavity. The biopsy specimen histopathologically revealed undifferentiated malignan

A rapidly growing palatal swelling poses a diagnostic challenge due to its wide differential, including odontogenic, epithelial, salivary gland, mesenchymal and haematolymphoid pathologies. We report the case of an elderly female with a history of treated breast carcinoma who presented with a solitary palatal mass. Clinical and radiographic findings initially raised suspicion of a metastatic lesion because of the patient's previous malignancy, rapid lesion enlargement, firm fixation, bone erosion, sinus extension and cervical lymphadenopathy. However, histopathological examination and immunohi

Neurofibroma is a benign, slow-growing, peripheral nerve neoplasm. It presents as a solitary tumor or component of neurofibromatosis (NF) and von Recklinghausen's disease. The occurrence of solitary neurofibromas in the oral cavity is less frequent, and those in the palate are reported in less numbers. This report describes an unusual case of solitary neurofibroma in the hard palate which clinically mimicked a mucocele.
