Trisomy 17 in a bonobo (Pan paniscus) and deletion of 3q in a lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla): comparison with human trisomy 18 and human deletion 4q syndrome.

Viral infections are controlled, and very often cleared, by activated T lymphocytes. The inducible co-stimulator (ICOS) mediates its functions by binding to its ligand ICOSL, enhancing T-cell activation and optimal germinal center (GC) formation. Here, we show that ICOSL is heavily downmodulated during infection of antigen-presenting cells by different herpesviruses. We found that, in murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV), the immunoevasin m138/fcr-1 physically interacts with ICOSL, impeding its maturation and promoting its lysosomal degradation. This viral protein counteracts T-cell responses, in an

Response to Garcia and Dunn.

Garcia and Dunn [1] raise some interesting and valuable points regarding our recent paper in Current Biology[2]. As Garcia and Dunn [1] point out, cross-species variation in vocal and anatomical relations allows for the identification of relevant outliers from the body size - fundamental frequency (f0) regression. However, this depends on the premise that the chosen or available f0 and body size values are typical of the species. A motivation for our study [2] was in part to improve the accuracy of such estimates by providing more data per species compared to previous studies. We address each

Trajectory analysis among African hominoids can provide insights into genetic and epigenetic influences during ontogeny.

OBJECTIVES: Prior examination of the ontogeny of Hominoid talo-crural joint morphology using Singular Warp analysis suggested both a genetic and epigenetic signal during development. This question is examined using trajectory analysis and its implications for the Hominin fossil record explored. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Trajectory analysis was used to examine talo-crural joint shape at different molar eruption stages during development among a cohort of 221 specimens of Homo sapiens, Gorilla gorilla, Pan troglodytes, and Pan paniscus. Trajectory length, angle, and shape were compared among speci

Effects of epidemic diseases on the distribution of bonobos.

This study examined how outbreaks and the occurrence of Anthrax, Ebola, Monkeypox and Trypanosomiasis may differentially affect the distribution of bonobos (Pan paniscus). Using a combination of mapping, Jaccard overlapping coefficients and binary regressions, the study determined how each disease correlated with the extent of occurrence of, and the areas occupied by, bonobos. Anthrax has only been reported to occur outside the range of bonobos and so was not considered further. Ebola, Monkeypox and Trypanosomiasis were each reported within the area of occupancy of bonobos. Their respective ov

Prevalence of antibodies against human respiratory viruses potentially involving anthropozoonoses in wild bonobos.

One of the current threats to the bonobo (Pan paniscus), a highly endangered ape species only found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, are anthropozoonoses caused by human respiratory viruses. To date, epidemiological information regarding respiratory viral infections in bonobos is limited. In this study, we examined fecal immunoglobulin A antibodies against human respiratory viruses in bonobos, which may help estimating the viral prevalence. A substantial proportion of bonobos were positive for the antiviral antibodies, including those against parainfluenza virus, respiratory syncytial

In vivo deciduous dental eruption in LuiKotale bonobos and Gombe chimpanzees.

OBJECTIVES: Existing data on bonobo and chimpanzee dental eruption timing are derived predominantly from captive individuals or deceased wild individuals. However, recent advances in noninvasive photographic monitoring of living, wild apes have enabled researchers to characterize dental eruption in relatively healthy individuals under naturalistic conditions. At present, such data are available for only one population of wild chimpanzees. We report data for an additional population of wild chimpanzees and the first dental eruption data for wild bonobos. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected pho

No evidence that maximum fundamental frequency reflects selection for signal diminution in bonobos.

Acoustic allometry consists of looking at how an organism's body size scales with the characteristics of its vocalizations. A typical finding based on this framework is that across mammals body size is reflected in the fundamental frequency (fo) of vocalizations, whereby lower fo indicates larger body size [1]. This relationship holds owing to the fact that vocal fold length generally scales with body size [2]. Cross-species comparisons allow for the identification of interesting outliers from the body size-f0 regression [3]. Such cases are of particular relevance as they can provide insight i

Characterization of Pan social systems reveals in-group/out-group distinction and out-group tolerance in bonobos.

Human between-group interactions are highly variable, ranging from violent to tolerant and affiliative. Tolerance between groups is linked to our unique capacity for large-scale cooperation and cumulative culture, but its evolutionary origins are understudied. In chimpanzees, one of our closest living relatives, predominantly hostile between-group interactions impede cooperation and information flow across groups. In contrast, in our other closest living relative, the bonobo, tolerant between-group associations are observed. However, as these associations can be frequent and prolonged and invo

Higher fundamental frequency in bonobos is explained by larynx morphology.

Acoustic signals, shaped by natural and sexual selection, reveal ecological and social selection pressures [1]. Examining acoustic signals together with morphology can be particularly revealing. But this approach has rarely been applied to primates, where clues to the evolutionary trajectory of human communication may be found. Across vertebrate species, there is a close relationship between body size and acoustic parameters, such as formant dispersion and fundamental frequency (f0). Deviations from this acoustic allometry usually produce calls with a lower f0 than expected for a given body si

Towards the restoration of ancient hominid craniofacial anatomy: Chimpanzee morphology reveals covariation between craniometrics and facial soft tissue thickness.

In modern humans, facial soft tissue thicknesses have been shown to covary with craniometric dimensions. However, to date it has not been confirmed whether these relationships are shared with non-human apes. In this study, we analyze these relationships in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) with the aim of producing regression models for approximating facial soft tissue thicknesses in Plio-Pleistocene hominids. Using CT scans of 19 subjects, 637 soft tissue, and 349 craniometric measurements, statistically significant multiple regression models were established for 26 points on the face and head. E

Black piedra was present in 21 of 72 museum pelts of chimpanzees (Pan paniscus and Pan satyrus) from Zaïre. In the absence of culture, the mycological characteristics observed in vivo, although insufficient to allow a definite identification of the Piedraia species involved, are almost identical with those of Piedraia quintanilhae Van Uden, De Barros-Machado & Castelo-Branco, 1963.

Transcript Isoform Diversity of Ampliconic Genes on the Y Chromosome of Great Apes.

Y chromosomal ampliconic genes (YAGs) are important for male fertility, as they encode proteins functioning in spermatogenesis. The variation in copy number and expression levels of these multicopy gene families has been studied in great apes; however, the diversity of splicing variants remains unexplored. Here, we deciphered the sequences of polyadenylated transcripts of all nine YAG families (BPY2, CDY, DAZ, HSFY, PRY, RBMY, TSPY, VCY, and XKRY) from testis samples of six great ape species (human, chimpanzee, bonobo, gorilla, Bornean orangutan, and Sumatran orangutan). To achieve this, we en

The external genitalia of female pygmy chimpanzees.

The external genitalia of four adult female pygmy chimpanzees (Pan paniscus) were examined during a 2-year period. It was found that the labia majora are retained in adults of this species and that, when tumescent, the labia minora effectively relocate the frenulum and clitoris so that they point anteriorly between the thighs. When detumescent, the configuration of the labia minora and clitoris resembles that of immature common chimpanzees (P. troglodytes). It is suggested that the simple, structural relocation of the clitoris from the normal condition noted in adult P. troglodytes makes possi

Evidence for representation of pretend objects by Kanzi, a language-trained bonobo.

Secondary representations enable our minds to depart from the here-and-now and generate imaginary, hypothetical, or alternate possibilities that are decoupled from reality, supporting many of our richest cognitive capacities such as mental-state attribution, simulation of possible futures, and pretense. We present experimental evidence that a nonhuman primate can represent pretend objects. Kanzi, a lexigram-trained bonobo, correctly identified the location of pretend objects (e.g., "juice" poured between empty containers), in response to verbal prompts in scaffolded pretense interactions. Evolution of water conservation in humans.

To sustain life, humans and other terrestrial animals must maintain a tight balance of water gain and water loss each day.1-3 However, the evolution of human water balance physiology is poorly understood due to the absence of comparative measures from other hominoids. While humans drink daily to maintain water balance, rainforest-living great apes typically obtain adequate water from their food and can go days or weeks without drinking4-6. Here, we compare isotope-depletion measures of water turnover (L/d) in zoo- and rainforest-sanctuary-housed apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangu

Multisite analysis of infant corpse carrying in Pan reveals maternal attachment and death context as explanations of carrying duration.

Understanding the mechanisms underlying non-human primate death-related behaviours is essential for reconstructing the evolution of human responses to death and death-related cognition. Infant corpse carrying is widely observed in chimpanzees and bonobos, yet its underlying mechanisms remain debated. Analysing 83 published cases across multiple sites using Bayesian mixed-effects models, we found strong support that infant corpse carrying duration varies with cause of death, infant age at death and site-level interbirth intervals. A less robust association of temperature with carrying duration

Examination of Fe and Cu Isotope Variation in Great Apes Using an Optimized Protocol.

RATIONALE: Iron deficiency plagues reproductive-aged women across the world, and blood loss during menstruation is proposed as the driving force. To assess if other factors related to reproduction influence Fe and Cu isotope variation in females, we measured Fe and Cu isotope compositions in the bones of chimpanzees and bonobos. METHODS: To do this, we optimize the protocol for isolating Fe and Cu (and Zn) from phosphate-rich skeletal materials for further analysis via MC-ICP-MS. Then, we address possible Fe and Cu variation sources in non-menstruating apes (n = 26, of which the sex of 10 was

Comparative Pathology of Aging Great Apes: Bonobos, Chimpanzees, Gorillas, and Orangutans.

The great apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans) are our closest relatives. Despite the many similarities, there are significant differences in aging among apes, including the human ape. Common to all are dental attrition, periodontitis, tooth loss, osteopenia, and arthritis, although gout is uniquely human and spondyloarthropathy is more prevalent in apes than humans. Humans are more prone to frailty, sarcopenia, osteoporosis, longevity past reproductive senescence, loss of brain volume, and Alzheimer dementia. Cerebral vascular disease occurs in both humans and apes. Cardiovas
