BACKGROUND: Glomerular endothelial glycocalyx (eGC) degradation and shedding play key roles in diabetic nephropathy (DN) pathogenesis. Although Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) have been utilized clinically for diabetes and its complications, the mechanisms by which PNS protects against glomerular eGC degradation, particularly through heparanase-1 (HPSE1)-mediated pathways, remain unclear.
PURPOSE: This study investigated whether PNS protects against glomerular eGC injury in DN by regulating the HPSE1/EGFR/STAT3 signaling axis.
METHODS: In vitro cell models and in vivo animal models of DN we

UNLABELLED: Cerebral ischemia damages central neurons, and abnormal microenvironment in ischemic condition is the key factor to the damages. The increase of local concentration of glutamic acid, the overload of Ca2+, and the mitochondrial stress caused by release of cytochrome C are important factors of abnormal microenvironment in cerebral ischemia. In this study ginsenoside Rb1, a compound from Panax Notoginseng, was used to intervene abnormal environment of neurons in the hippocampal CA1 region in two animal models (microperfusion model and photothrombosis model).
RESULTS: Compared with th

Wound healing is a complex physiological process involving homeostasis, inflammation, proliferation, migration and tissue remodeling. Impaired keratinocyte migration across the wound bed is a key determinant of non-healing wounds. In this context, plant-derived nanovesicles (PDNVs) have emerged as promising therapeutic agents for wound healing due to their high yield, intrinsic biocompatibility, the ability to traverse biological barriers, and an intrinsic molecular cargo (lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, and phytochemicals) that can exert multitarget effects. In this study, we screened a pane

BACKGROUND: Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) disrupts innate immunity by inducing necroptosis in polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs), a process linked to excessive inflammation and tissue damage. CA-MRSA releases virulence factors that enhance its pathogenicity by disrupting the host's innate immune response, particularly impairing the phagocytic function of PMNs. Steamed Panax notoginseng (S-PN), a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has demonstrated immune-regulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, showing promising therapeutic effects in alleviat

The efficacy of synbiotic ("probiotic + prebiotic") strategies against soil-borne diseases is often limited by the low specificity of conventional prebiotics, which may also stimulate pathogens. Here, we developed a precision synbiotic system using a sugar alcohol mixture (SAs) as a selective substrate for the probiotic yeast Saitozyma podzolica (SP), while being poorly utilized by the root rot pathogen Ilyonectria vredehoekensis (I1). In Panax notoginseng, the synbiotic system simultaneously enhanced root biomass and reduced root rot incidence. Multiomics analyses revealed dual mechanisms und

Two sample pretreatment methods of pesticide residues in Panax notoginseng of Chinese traditional medicine were developed. For Method I, the residues were extracted from homogenized tissue with n-hexane-dichloromethane (6:4) by means of ultrasonication, the crude extract was purified by an Envi-carb/NH2 solid-phase extraction (SPE) column. For Method II, matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) technique was used for extracting and cleaning up. The eluates were concentrated by rotary evaporation, and then were redissolved in dichloromethane prior to GC-MS determination. The determination was perfo

Panax notoginseng saponins have recently been reported to suppress liver fibrosis. Since ginsenoside-Rg1 is the most abundant component of P.notoginseng saponins, we investigated the effect of ginsenoside-Rg1 on experimental liver fibrosis in rats. Histological analysis revealed that ginsenoside-Rg1 significantly improved the extent of liver fibrosis in rats induced by thioacetamide. Ginsenoside-Rg1 markedly suppressed the serum levels of fibrotic markers and hepatic hydroxyproline content in rats treated with thioacetamide. Ginsenoside-Rg1 also reduced the serum levels of alanine transaminase

Skin wound repair involves four stages: haemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and remodelling. Refractory wounds feature prolonged healing cycles, severe scar hyperplasia and limited clinical therapeutic strategies. Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS), primarily the ginsenosides Rg1 and Rb1 monomers, display high safety and multitarget regulatory properties across the entire wound repair cycle. PNS modulates the inflammatory microenvironment and induces M2-type polarization of macrophages by inhibiting NF-κB, MAPK and other signalling pathways; activates the PI3K/AKT pathway to promote the pro

Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) are the main active components of Panax notoginseng. But after oral administration, they need to be converted into rare ginsenosides by human gut microbiota and gastric juice before they can be readily absorbed into the bloodstream and exert their effects. The sources of rare ginsenosides are extremely limited in P. notoginseng and other medical plants, which hinders their application in functional foods and drugs. Therefore, the production of rare ginsenosides by the transformation of PNS using Aspergillus fumigatus was studied in this research. During 50 days

BACKGROUND: It is widely recognized that atherosclerosis (AS) is related to vascular inflammation. Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) extracted from the roots of Panax notoginseng have been shown to possess anti-inflammatory activity. It is widely used in the clinical treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, but the protective effect of PNS on atherosclerosis is not fully understood. This study was designed to test the effects of PNS administration in apolipoprotein (apo)-E-deficient (ApoE-/-) mice on the activation of NF-κB p65, IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α and Calpain1 proteins.
