Professor Salim Haim (1919-1983) was a well-known dermatologist. In 1965, Dr. Haim and Dr. Munk, a radiologist, reported a rare congenital type of genodermatosis, later known as Haim-Munk syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by palmoplantar keratosis, pes planus, onychogryphosis, periodontitis, arachnodactyly, and acroosteolysis. This report discusses Haim and Haim-Munk syndrome.

Polymorphonuclear functions were studied in 3 patients of the same brotherhood with Papillon-Lefèvre disease (hyperkeratosis palmaris and plantaris and acute periodontosis resulting in loss of teeth) who developed severe and recurrent infections. Chemotaxis, oxygen consumption and production of H2 O2 were investigated by polarography, O2 production by quantitative reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium and iodination by the Pinus and Klebanoff technique. functional anomalies of polymorphonuclears involving chemotaxis, induced O2 consumption and H2 O2 production were detected in all three patients.

Papillon Lefevre syndrome is presented in the cases of two female patients of the ages of 7 and 9, who exhibited all typical symptoms of the disease. Microbiological and histopathological studies were done and treatment provided. Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, which is suspected as a pathogenic factor in the disease was identified as well as some other gram negative microorganisms and an antibiogram was performed in which amoxycillin plus clavulanic acid was most effective. Histopathological investigation also confirmed the presence of gram negative bacteria. Granular cell infiltration

BACKGROUND: Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) is an autosomal recessive disorder with a prevalence of approximately 1-4 cases per one million individuals. This condition frequently leads to premature loss of both the primary and the permanent teeth. PLS is primarily caused by mutations in the cathepsin C (CTSC) gene, resulting in the loss of CTSC function, which disrupts immune regulation and triggers severe inflammatory responses. Maintaining and preserving teeth in these patients therefore presents a significant challenge for periodontists.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient received multidiscipl

Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis characterized by the association of palmoplantar keratoderma with severe periodontopathy resulting in premature loss of both deciduous and permanent dentition. We treated a patient with PLS with etretinate and followed him for 10 years. Treatment was started at age 9 years, soon after the eruption of secondary dentition. Healing of cutaneous and periodontal lesions was obtained in a few months and maintained during the four years of treatment. Six years after etretinate withdrawal the teeth are still free of periodont

Papillon-Lefevre syndrome (PLS) is a rare disease characterized by skin lesions, which includes palmar-plantar hyperkeratosis and hyperhidrosis with severe periodontal destruction involving both the primary and the permanent dentitions. It is transmitted as an autosomal-recessive condition, and consanguinity of parents is evident in about one-third of the cases. This paper describes a 13-year-old male patient who presented to the department of pedodontics, with rapidly progressing periodontitis. A general physical examination revealed scaling on the hands and feet, which had been medically dia

Papillon Lefevre Syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder. One of the most destructive forms is a periodontal disease. A 19 year female with the syndrome, came for dental treatment. Most of her natural dentition was missing. The remaining five natural teeth had extensive carious and periodontal lesions. Two poor dentures replaced the missing teeth. Her main oral complaints were poor esthetics, teeth sensitiveness, and dentures instability. All the remaining natural teeth were removed and the dentures repaired and rebased in one session. Following wound healing and the maturation of the resi

A 7-year-old boy born to consanguineous parents had suffered from palmoplantar keratoderma and chronic gingivitis since the age of 3 months. He was diagnosed with Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome. Genetic testing confirmed that he was homozygous with a point mutation in exon 6 of the cathepsin C gene. One year after initiating treatment with acitretin 10 mg oral daily and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, the patient's skin remains almost lesion-free, and he has new teeth that erupted during treatment and are free of periodontal disease.

Two cases with Papillon-Lefèvre Syndrome (PLS) are reported. They are two brothers belonging to a family which there is strong consanguinity. An autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance is suggested. Some pathological findings as congenital bronchiectasis observed in one of the patients as well as the PLS features are discussed and considered to be fortuitous defects. These observations are compared with those described in the literature.

We report the first case of a girl who presented with Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) and subsequently developed systemic lupus erythematosus and liver cirrhosis. This indicates that autoimmune diseases can be a complication in patients with PLS. Cathepsin C gene mutations were not found in our patient or her mother. Thus, other genetic factors may have been involved in this patient.

This report presents the case of a girl in early adolescence with symptoms suggestive of Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) who remained undetected with poorly managed periodontitis until the advanced stage of alveolar resorption, leading to multiple tooth loss due to periodontitis. All remaining teeth had grade III mobility and negligible alveolar support, necessitating extraction. Conventional complete dentures were provided for functional and aesthetic rehabilitation. The literature review conducted to evaluate various dental treatment strategies and their outcomes for patients diagnosed with

Cathepsin C (CTSC) is a lysosomal cysteine protease constitutively expressed at high levels in the lung, kidney, liver, and spleen. It plays a key role in the activation of serine proteases in cytotoxic T cells, natural killer cells (granzymes A and B), mast cells (chymase and tryptase) and neutrophils (cathepsin G, neutrophil elastase, proteinase 3) underscoring its pivotal significance in immune and inflammatory defenses. Here, we comprehensively review the structural attributes, synthesis, and function of CTSC, with a focus on its variants implicated in the etiopathology of several syndrome

Papillon-Lefevre syndrome and Haim Munk syndrome are palmoplantar keratodermas associated with premature periodontal destruction. The additional findings of Haim Munk Syndrome include onychogryphosis, arachnodactyly, acral osteolysis and pes planus. Both are associated with mutations in the lysosomal protease cathepsin C. We describe a patient with phenotype for Haim Munk Syndrome and genetic analysis revealed a homozygous point mutation in exon 1 of the gene encoding cathepsin C.

Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) is a rare inherited palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK) that is associated with progressive gingivitis and recurrent pyodermas. We present a case exhibiting classic features of this autosomal-recessive condition and review the current understanding of its pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment. Additionally, a review of pertinent transgredient PPKs is undertaken, with key and distinguishing features of each syndrome highlighted.

Papillon-Lefevre syndrome was observed in two boys in the same family, and the topic of this report, the second to appear in the Greek dental literature. Both patients presented with hyperkeratosis of the palms and soles and severe periodontal destruction; the latter was more prominent in the younger boy. The children will lose their teeth before reaching maturity.

This review comprises issues concerning cysteine cathepsins (CCs): human peptidases belonging to papain family (C1) of clan CA of cysteine proteases: cathepsins B, L, H, S, K, F, V, X, W, O and C. The involvement of these enzymes in physiological and pathological processes is described, especially with respect to their application as diagnostic and prognostic markers. They participate in precursor protein activation (including proenzymes and prohormones), MHC-II-mediated antigen presentation, bone remodeling, keratinocytes differentiation, hair follicle cycle, reproduction and apoptosis.
