Yew poisoning of olive baboons (Papio anubis) in captivity: laboratory diagnosis.

OBJECTIVES: Toxic effects of the yew have been known since ancient times. Yew toxicity is due to the content of cyanogenic glycosides and a mixture of alkaloids known as taxines. Taxine B is probably responsible for the most part of adverse effects in poisoned organisms. This particular taxoid is common in body fluids of the yew-poisoned. The present study is engaged with laboratory examination to confirm substances that lead to fatality of a pair of olive baboons (Papio anubis) following ingestion of yew seeds. When both cage mates (male and female) died suddenly, poisoning was suspected beca

Novel genital alphapapillomaviruses in baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis) with cervical dysplasia.

Genital Alphapapillomavirus (αPV) infections are one of the most common sexually transmitted human infections worldwide. Women infected with the highly oncogenic genital human papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18 are at high risk for development of cervical cancer. Related oncogenic αPVs exist in rhesus and cynomolgus macaques. Here the authors identified 3 novel genital αPV types (PhPV1, PhPV2, PhPV3) by PCR in cervical samples from 6 of 15 (40%) wild-caught female Kenyan olive baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis). Eleven baboons had koilocytes in the cervix and vagina. Three baboons had dysplast

Tuberculosis in wild olive baboons, Papio cynocephalus anubis (Lesson), in Kenya.

Several wild olive baboons from a single troop in the Masai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya were observed to be lethargic and emaciated. Five were trapped and tuberculin tested by intradermal inoculation of 0.1 cc (100 IU) mammalian old tuberculin in the upper eyelid. Two of the five showed positive reaction at 72 hr and were examined at necropsy. Gross lesions in both animals consisted of multiple nodules with caseation in the lung, spleen and tracheobronchial lymph nodes. There were multiple granulomas throughout the lung, spleen and the lymph nodes. Tissues were cultured on Lowenstein-Jensen media

Structural and cellular architecture of conjunctival lymphoid follicles in the baboon (Papio anubis).

Conjunctival lymphoid follicles (CLFs), present in normal individuals, undergo hyperplasia upon conjunctival infection by a specific array of pathogens; infection-associated enlargement of draining preauricular lymph nodes suggests that conjunctival follicles participate in the afferent limb of acquired immune responses for the ocular surface. The present study was performed to delineate the structural and lymphoid anatomy of CLFs in the baboon (Papio anubis), a non-human primate conjunctival model with close similarity to the human. Conjunctiva from both eyes, along with mesenteric lymph node

Mating avoidance in female olive baboons (Papio anubis) infected by Treponema pallidum.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are ubiquitous within wild animal populations, yet it remains largely unknown whether animals evolved behavioral avoidance mechanisms in response to STI acquisition. We investigated the mating behavior of a wild population of olive baboons (Papio anubis) infected by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. This pathogen causes highly conspicuous genital ulcerations in males and females, which signal infectious individuals. We analyzed data on 876 mating attempts and associated acceptance or rejection responses in a group of about 170 baboons. Our findings indica

Noradrenergic and dopaminergic effects of (+)-amphetamine-like stimulants in the baboon Papio anubis.

(+)-Amphetamine, (+/-)-ephedrine, and phentermine are commonly used appetite suppressants that release monoamines from nerve cells by acting as substrates for biogenic amine transporters. One key difference among the three drugs is their selectivity for norepinephrine (NE) release vs. dopamine (DA) release. The NE/DA selectivity ratios for these drugs as determined in vitro [(EC50 NE(-1))/(EC50 DA(-1))] are (+/-)-ephedrine (18.6) > phentermine (6.7) > (+)-amphetamine (3.5). The in vitro data suggest that when administered in vivo, these stimulants might differ in their ability to release DA fr

The effects of MK801 on the high pressure neurological syndrome in the baboon (Papio anubis).

The in vivo neurophysiological interactions of the non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist MK801 with the High Pressure Neurological Syndrome have been investigated in the primate Papio anubis. A hyperbaric chamber was used to achieve environmental pressures of 61 ATA (atmospheres absolute) over a period of 5 hr. Eight animals underwent 2 compressions each, one following pretreatment with 0.03 mg/kg (i.v.) MK801, the other a control. Half of the animals received MK801 on their first exposure. Mild signs of the high pressure neurological syndrome, e.g. paw and limb tremor were first observed b

A comparison of aggressive play and aggression in free-living baboons, Papio anubis.

A quantitative comparison is given of aggressive play and aggression in terms of the duration and type of movement patterns employed, and the relationships between individuals. The mean length of contact in play was greater than in aggression, whereas chases tended to be longer in adult male aggression than in play, Linear hierarchies describing the overall direction of interactions between individuals were divisible into two sorts, according to the frequency with which roles were reversed. The regions of the body bitten and the proportions in which six types of movement pattern were used were

Experimental infection of baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis) with Chlamydia pneumoniae strain 'TWAR'.

Two infant baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis) were inoculated with Chlamydia pneumoniae strain 'TWAR', one in the conjunctiva, nasopharynx and oropharynx, the other in the trachea. Both remained well during 8 weeks of observation. C. pneumoniae infection persisted for at least 8 weeks after inoculation. Chlamydia pneumoniae seems to be of low virulence in baboons and capable of causing chronic infection.

Mathematical modelling Treponema infection in free-ranging Olive baboons (Papio anubis) in Tanzania.

Yaws is a chronic infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum susp. pertenue (TPE) that was thought to be an exclusive human pathogen but was recently found and confirmed in nonhuman primates. In this paper, we develop the first compartmental ODE model for TPE infection with treatment of wild olive baboons. We solve for disease-free and endemic equilibria and give conditions on local and global stability of the disease-free equilibrium. We calibrate the model based on the data from Lake Manyara National Park in Tanzania. We use the model to help the park managers devise an effective s

Long-term follow-up of vitrified and autografted baboon (Papio anubis) ovarian tissue.

STUDY QUESTION: Can vitrified baboon ovarian tissue survive >5 months after autotransplantation and subsequently restore fertility? SUMMARY ANSWER: Our results show that ovarian tissue grafts can survive at least 18 months, but fertility restoration could not be confirmed due to lack of pregnancy. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Ovarian function in baboons can be re-established after autografting of vitrified-warmed ovarian tissue fragments. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: Ovaries from five adult female baboons were used for this study. Unilateral ovariectomy was performed in each animal, followed by

Eosinophilia in Kenyan baboons (Papio anubis) induced by Trichinella spiralis and Schistosoma mansoni.

High primary doses of Trichinella spiralis administered orally to Kenyan baboons (Papio anubis) induced a marked but unpredictable eosinophilia which started 2--3 weeks after infection and persisted as erratic waves for at least 6 months. Low primary oral doses induced no eosinophilia but a later, high challenge gave an accelerated eosinophilic response, although the peak was lower than in high primary infection. Intravenous injection of infective T. spiralis larvae resulted in a predictable, rapid eosinophilic response which persisted for several weeks. Intravenous injection of a particulate

Facial and genital lesions in baboons (Papio anubis) of Kibale National Park, Uganda.

We describe and document with digital images two adult male baboons (Papio anubis) from the Kibale National Park, Uganda who were infected with some kind of disease having clinical signs suggestive of Treponema pallidum. One of these males was missing his premaxilla, part of the maxilla, upper incisors, canines, and possibly the first premolars. The condition of his scrotum was not seen. The other adult male had prominent inflammation of his scrotum and, to a lesser extent, his penis. Otherwise, both males appeared normal and healthy and were apparently well integrated into the same social gro

Jejunal intussusception and small bowel transmural infarction in a baboon (Papio hamadryas anubis).

A 4.3-y-old, colony-bred female baboon (Papio hamadryas anubis) of low social rank and exhibiting no clinically significant signs of illness or distress was found dead at the Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center baboon breeding facility at El Reno, OK. Prior to death she exhibited excessive grooming behavior both toward herself and other baboons. In addition, she was consistently shy, timid, reclusive, and prone to minimal sustained movement (that is, generally lethargic behavior). Animals of low social rank typically exhibit some degree of these behaviors in order to avoid surplus inter

Zoonotic Gastrointestinal Parasites of Baboons (Papio anubis) in the Shai Hill Reserve in Ghana.

Several intestinal parasites of baboons are of zoonotic importance, especially where there is considerable interaction between the baboons and humans. The identification of gastrointestinal parasite infections of baboons (Papio anubis) was undertaken at the Shai Hills Reserve Resort, Ghana. A total of 51 faecal samples were collected randomly from individual baboons (51) and examined for cysts, eggs, and larvae of parasites of medical importance, using the direct saline smear and formol-ether concentration technique. The baboons were in 7 troops and were grouped into juveniles, subadults, and
