Trisomy 17 in a baboon (Papio hamadryas) with polydactyly, patent foramen ovale and pyelectasis.

Trisomy 13 in humans is the third most common autosomal abnormality at birth, after trisomy 21 and trisomy 18. It has a reported incidence of between 1:5,000 and 1:30,000 live births. It is associated with multiple abnormalities, many of which shorten lifespan. We describe here the first reported case of a baboon (Papio hamadryas) with trisomy of chromosome 17, which is homologous to human chromosome 13. The trisomic infant was born to a consanguineous pair of baboons and had morphological characteristics similar to those observed in human trisomy 13, including bilateral polydactyly in the upp

[Effect of naloxone in hypotension caused by acute blood loss in Papio hamadryas baboons].

Naloxone or physiological solution were injected in different doses to 11 baboons (Papio hamadryas) weighing 7-8 kg after bloodletting in a volume of 40% of the total amount of the blood. Naloxone effectively raised (in all the doses) the arterial blood pressure which dropped after bloodletting. The action of naloxone injected in small doses was more pronounced and had unique time parameters. Besides, the respiratory rate was also increased. Injection of nalorphine in a dose of 1 mg/kg produced a similar but a more demonstrable action as compared with naloxone in a dose of 1 mg/kg. A conclusio

Association between Papio hamadryas populations and human gastrointestinal infectious diseases in southwestern Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Papio hamadryas baboons, known reservoirs of several infectious diseases, roam and deposit their excreta indiscriminately on footpaths, parks, and streets of the city peripheries of Taif, Baha, and Abha in southwestern Saudi Arabia. Nonetheless, city centers of these places are free of baboons. This study aims to determine the impact of baboons on human gastrointestinal health. DESIGN AND SETTINGS: This is a descriptive cross-sectional analytical ecological study conducted in 3 cities located in southwestern Saudi Arabia between July 2011 and July 2012. MATERIALS A

Comparative Assessment of Vessel Sealing Devices in Laparoscopic Salpingectomy of Captive Papio hamadryas.

This prospective randomized clinical study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and surgical performance of laparoscopic salpingectomy as a method for permanent contraception in captive Papio hamadryas, with particular focus on comparing two vessel-sealing technologies: a radiofrequency bipolar device (LigaSure Dolphin Tip) and an ultrasonic scalpel (Harmonic). Thirty-two healthy female baboons (25 adults and 7 subadults), weighing between 4 and 15 kg-including six pregnant and fourteen in estrus-were randomly assigned to either the LigaSure (LS; n = 16) or Harmonic (HS; n = 16) group. Comparison of Three Different Balanced Sedative-Anaesthetic Protocols in Captive Baboons (Papio hamadryas).

Baboons' management requires chemical restraint. Three intramuscular sedative protocols in captive hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) undergoing health-check and male vasectomy were compared. Animals were assigned to TZD_G (n = 17; tiletamine/zolazepam 3 mg/kg + dexmedetomidine 20 μg/kg), KDM_G (n = 23; ketamine 6 mg/kg + dexmedetomidine 30 μg/kg + methadone 0.2 mg/kg), or MDM_G (n = 9; midazolam 2 mg/kg + dexmedetomidine 60 μg/kg + methadone 0.2 mg/kg). Propofol was titrated intravenously for anaesthetic induction and maintenance. Sedation time and quality and cardiopulmonary parameters were

Jejunal intussusception and small bowel transmural infarction in a baboon (Papio hamadryas anubis).

A 4.3-y-old, colony-bred female baboon (Papio hamadryas anubis) of low social rank and exhibiting no clinically significant signs of illness or distress was found dead at the Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center baboon breeding facility at El Reno, OK. Prior to death she exhibited excessive grooming behavior both toward herself and other baboons. In addition, she was consistently shy, timid, reclusive, and prone to minimal sustained movement (that is, generally lethargic behavior). Animals of low social rank typically exhibit some degree of these behaviors in order to avoid surplus inter

Effect of Pregnancy and Age on Alopecia in Adult Female Baboons (Papio hamadryas spp).

Alopecia occurs frequently in captive populations of nonhuman primates. Because multiple factors can play a role in alopecia, a better understanding of its etiology will help identify potential welfare concerns. The purpose of this study was to investigate risk factors for alopecia in a breeding colony of baboons with a focus on pregnancy and age. Alopecia was scored on a scale of 0 (no alopecia) to 5 (severe alopecia) in 253 female baboons during routine physicals. The subjects ranged in age from 4 to 23 y (Mean = 9.6) and were categorized as pregnant (n = 83), nursing (n = 60) or control (n

Case Report: From critical trauma to functional recovery: a novel surgical and hand-rearing strategy in a neonatal Hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas).

Infanticide and infant-directed aggression are recognized behaviors in non-human primates and can occasionally lead to severe neonatal trauma. This report describes the successful management of a life-threatening anorectal and sacro-coccygeal injury in a neonatal Hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas) following an aggressive encounter with an adult male. The neonate presented in critical condition with profuse hemorrhage, sacro-coccygeal dislocation, and extensive damage to the perineal and anorectal tissues, resulting in hypovolemia and hemodynamic instability. After initial stabilization, emerge

Maternal parity affects neonatal survival rate in a colony of captive bred baboons (Papio hamadryas).

BACKGROUND: Non-human primates, particularly baboons, are valuable as animal models for reproductive research, because of their similarity to humans. Knowledge of colony-specific pregnancy and neonatal outcomes is essential for interpretation of such research. METHODS: A retrospective review of the reproductive records of the Australian National Baboon Colony (ANBC) from 1994 to 2006 was performed. RESULTS: The overall live birth rate was over 70% of recognized pregnancies. Pregnancy loss was due to equal proportions of spontaneous abortion and stillbirth, and was not affected by maternal ag

Clinical Management of Helicobacter Infection in Captive Baboons (Papio anubis and Papio hamadryas), and Isolation and Molecular Characterization of Three Novel Helicobacter Species.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter spp. are gastric or enterohepatic bacteria that can be commensal, opportunistic, or pathogenic. Few studies have evaluated Helicobacter spp. in baboons. METHODS: Twenty-seven captive baboons were surveyed for Helicobacter spp. by fecal PCR, and a subset evaluated by culture. Nine baboons were treated with oral "triple therapy" with clarithromycin (10 mg/kg), amoxicillin (10 mg/kg), and omeprazole (20 mg) once daily for 10 days. RESULTS: All baboons were positive for Helicobacter spp., including H. macacae (78%), H. suis (19%), and H. pylori (15%). Three novel Helicob

2D:4D digit ratio is not a biomarker of developmental programming in baboons (Papio hamadryas species).

We hypothesized second-to-fourth hand digit ratio (2D:4D) is a biomarker of developmental programming in 3 baboon groups: intrauterine growth restriction (7 females, 8 males), exposure during fetal life to synthetic glucocorticoids (4 females, 5 males), and controls (66 females, 20 males). 2D:4D was similar between sexes and groups.

Comparison of Cardiorespiratory Effects of Two Balanced Anesthesia Protocols in Baboons (Papio hamadryas) Undergoing Laparoscopic Salpingectomy.

Laparoscopic salpingectomy is a minimally invasive surgery that requires careful anesthetic management due to the effects of intra-abdominal gas insufflation. In this retrospective study, baboons (Papio hamadryas) were treated with two induction protocols: medetomidine-ketamine (MK; n = 16) and medetomidine-tiletamine-zolazepam (MZ; n = 12) via intramuscular injection. A laryngeal mask (LMA) was used for airway management and anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane in 100% oxygen. For statistical analysis, the following parameters were analyzed via two-way ANOVA: heart rate (HR), respiratory

Zoonotic parasite infections of the Arabian sacred baboon Papio hamadryas arabicus Thomas in Asir Province, Saudi Arabia.

Evidence of zoonotic parasite infection was recorded in the faeces of the Arabian Sacred Baboon in human populated residential and non-residential areas in Asir, Southwestern Saudi Arabia. Cysts of Giardia intestinalis and Entamoeba histolytica, and ova of Hymenolepis nana, Enterobius vermicularis, Ascaris sp., Trichuris sp., and a hookworm were encountered in 45 (about 39%) of 115 faecal samples examined. A higher rate of infection was observed in the residential areas. Most of the parasites recovered in the baboons were also found to infect humans in these areas. Since this primate has previ

Patterns of gastro-intestinal parasites and commensals as an index of population and ecosystem health: the case of sympatric western chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) and guinea baboons (Papio hamadryas papio) at Fongoli, Senegal.

The exponential decline of great apes over the past 50 years has resulted in an urgent need for data to inform population viability assessment and conservation strategies. Health monitoring of remaining ape populations is an important component of this process. In support of this effort, we examined endoparasitic and commensal prevalence and richness as proxies of population health for western chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) and sympatric guinea baboons (Papio hamadryas papio) at Fongoli, Senegal, a site dominated by woodland-savanna at the northwestern extent of chimpanzees' geographic ra

Transesophageal Echocardiography in Healthy Young Adult Male Baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis): Normal Cardiac Anatomy and Function in Subhuman Primates Compared to Humans.

Implantable, viable tissue engineered cardiovascular constructs are rapidly approaching clinical translation. Species typically utilized as preclinical large animal models are food stock ungulates for which cross species biological and genomic differences with humans are great. Multiple authorities have recommended developing subhuman primate models for testing regenerative surgical strategies to mitigate xenotransplant inflammation. However, there is a lack of specific quantitative cardiac imaging comparisons between humans and the genomically similar baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis). This st

Delta cell death in the islet of Langerhans and the progression from normal glucose tolerance to type 2 diabetes in non-human primates (baboon, Papio hamadryas).

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: The cellular composition of the islet of Langerhans is essential to ensure its physiological function. Morphophysiological islet abnormalities are present in type 2 diabetes but the relationship between fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and islet cell composition, particularly the role of delta cells, is unknown. We explored these questions in pancreases from baboons (Papio hamadryas) with FPG ranging from normal to type 2 diabetic values. METHODS: We measured the volumes of alpha, beta and delta cells and amyloid in pancreatic islets of 40 baboons (Group 1 [G1]: FPG < 4.44 mmol/l
