Retired para athletes hold limited leadership roles in Canadian national sport federations.

Despite increasing support for Paralympic athletes in Canada, concerns have been raised about their limited involvement in leadership positions within the National Sport Federations (NSFs) that govern Paralympic sports in Canada. We sought to determine the representation of retired para athletes in leadership roles across Canadian NSFs, and identify strategies, facilitators and barriers to retaining para athlete expertise in these roles. An electronic survey was distributed via email to all 27 NSFs representing Canada's summer and winter Paralympic sports and total of 18 NSFs participated. Rep

Functional Reaction Times of a Simulated Blocking Test among Para Taekwondo Athletes.

Para taekwondo is a combat sport martial art that requires fast reaction times for successful defense during fighting. The current classification system is based on the function and the effective length of the upper limbs, which affects the athlete's ability to block. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the differences between the different classes in the athlete's ability to block and move around the ring. A total of 87 Para taekwondo (K42, K43, and K44) athletes' data were analyzed. Each participant engaged in the blocking reaction time test in a fighting stance with the left leg in f

Conceptual model of sport-specific classification for para-athletes with intellectual impairment.

The present paper describes the conceptual basis of evidence-based classification of para-athletes with intellectual impairment (II). An extensive description of the theoretical and conceptual foundation of the system as currently conceived is provided, as are examples of its applications in the three sports included in the Paralympic programme for II-athletes in 2020 (i.e., athletics, swimming and table tennis). Evidence-based classification for II-athletes is driven by two central questions: i. How can intellectual impairment be substantiated in a valid and reliable way, and ii. Does intelle

Psychosocial predictors of mobbing and burnout in para-athletes: Insights for mental health.

Para-athletes may experience psychological challenges such as mobbing and burnout, which can impair their performance, motivation, and well-being. Despite the inclusive goals of the Paralympic Movement, recent evidence suggests that para-athletes are not immune to negative psychosocial experiences. This study aimed to examine the relationship between mobbing exposure and burnout among para-athletes and to identify demographic and psychological predictors of mobbing. This cross-sectional study included para-athletes aged 18-45 with at least two years of sports experience. Participants completed

Cognitive and executive functions of top level para-karate athletes with intellectual disability.

Karate is one of the most popular martial arts. This study investigates the cognitive profiles of top-level Para Karate athletes with intellectual disability (ID), aiming to assess the extent to which cognitive abilities are related to athletic performance. Cognitive and executive functions, including decision-making, processing speed, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control, are critical in high-level sports but are often understudied in athletes with ID. We conducted cognitive assessments and executive function tests on a cohort of elite Para Karate athletes (n = 42) ag

Upper-Limb asymmetry in wheelchair para-athletes: a comparative analysis across sports disciplines.

BACKGROUND: Wheelchair use has increased globally, with many individuals relying on wheelchairs not only for mobility but also for participation in sport. However, upper-limb (UL) asymmetries are common among wheelchair athletes and may contribute to overuse injuries. Limited evidence exists regarding how asymmetry differs among athletes in para-sports who use wheelchairs to compete. This study aimed to compare UL asymmetry levels among wheelchair para-athletes across different sports disciplines through an exploratory analysis. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 30 wheelchai

Para athletes' perceptions of abuse: a qualitative study across three lower resourced countries.

OBJECTIVES: Interpersonal violence is an increasingly recognised risk of sport participation and causally linked to negative physical and mental health outcomes. Para athletes from low- and middle-income countries may be at highest risk of physical, psychological, sexual and neglect-related violence due to various factors; however, their perceptions of these abusive behaviours are unknown. This study examined the perceptions and experiences of abuse in para athletes from three lower resourced countries: Ghana, India and Brazil. METHODS: Qualitative data from semistructured focus group intervi

Race and geography impact validity of maximum allowable standing height equations for para-athletes.

World Athletics use maximum allowable standing height (MASH) equations for para-athletes with bilateral lower extremity amputations to estimate stature and limit prosthesis length since longer prostheses can provide running performance advantages. The equations were developed using a white Spanish population; however, validation for other races and geographical groups is limited. This study aimed to determine the validity of the MASH equations for Black and white Americans and whether bias errors between calculated and measured stature were similar between these populations. How Do We Assess Energy Availability and RED-S Risk Factors in Para Athletes?

Low energy availability (LEA) is considered to be the underlying cause of a number of maladaptations in athletes, including impaired physiological function, low bone mineral density (BMD), and hormonal dysfunction. This is collectively referred to as 'Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport' (RED-S). LEA is calculated through assessment of dietary energy intake (EI), exercise energy expenditure (EEE) and fat-free mass (FFM). The incidence of LEA in Paralympic athletes is relatively unknown; however, there are legitimate concerns that Para athletes may be at even higher risk of LEA than able-bodied
