Clostridium sordellii is a gram-positive, anaerobic sporeforming rod with peritrichous flagella that is rarely associated with disease in humans. In most cases, infections occur after trauma, childbirth and routine gynecological procedures or intravenous drug abuse. C. sordellii produce several exotoxins that lead to progressive edema and shock, and C. sordellii infections have high mortality rates of up to 70%. Since its first report in 1922, only a few cases of bacteremia have been reported. This report describes a case of C. sordellii bacteremia in a patient with rectum carcinoma and liver

Paeniclostridium sordellii is involved in enteric and histotoxic infections in several animal species. In humans, P. sordellii has been linked to gynecological disease, an association not previously investigated in animals. To unveil a potential association of P. sordellii with veterinary reproductive disease, a retrospective search of the database of the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System (1990-2020) was conducted and identified 9 cases of goats with P. sordellii-associated metritis or endometritis that were confirmed by immunofluorescence antibody test and/or bacteria

Clostridium difficile and Clostridium sordellii produce related potent toxins (C. difficile toxin A (TcdA) and toxin B (TcdB), C. sordellii lethal toxin (TcsL) and hemorrhagic toxin (TcsH)) which belong to the large clostridial glucosylating toxin (LCGT) family. TcsL is the main C. sordellii toxin as most of toxigenic C. sordellii strains only synthesize this toxin. Intestinal colonization by C. difficile subsequently to unbalanced microbiota is accompanied by release of toxins which induce local tissue destruction and severe inflammatory response. TcdA and TcdB inactivate Rho-GTPases. Notably

Clostridium sordellii is a spore-forming anaerobic Gram-positive rod that has rarely been reported to cause disease in humans. Resultant mortality from infection is estimated at nearly 70% and is most often correlated with gynaecological procedures, intravenous drug abuse or trauma. C. sordellii infection often presents similarly to toxic shock syndrome (TSS); notable features of infection include refractory hypotension, haemoconcentration and marked leucocytosis. Although clinically similar to TSS, a notable difference is C. sordellii infections rarely involve fever. The organism's major toxi

Clostridium sordellii lethal toxin and Clostridium novyi α-toxin, which are virulence factors involved in the toxic shock and gas gangrene syndromes, are members of the family of clostridial glucosylating toxins. The toxins inactivate Rho/Ras proteins by glucosylation or attachment of GlcNAc (α-toxin). Here, we studied the activation of the autoproteolytic processing of the toxins by inositol hexakisphosphate (InsP(6)) and compared it with the processing of Clostridium difficile toxin B. In the presence of low concentrations of InsP(6) (<1 μM), toxin fragments consisting of the N-terminal gluc

On July 19, 2005, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health advisory regarding the deaths of four women in the United States after medical abortions with Mifeprex (mifepristone, formerly RU-486; Danco Laboratories, New York, New York) and intravaginal misoprostol. Two of these deaths occurred in 2003, one in 2004, and one in 2005. Two of these U.S. cases had clinical illness consistent with toxic shock and had evidence of endometrial infection with Clostridium sordellii, a gram-positive, toxin-forming anaerobic bacteria. In addition, a fatal case of C. sordellii toxic shock

BACKGROUND: Clostridium sordellii infections are rare and highly lethal. They are most associated with medical abortions and other genitourinary procedures. We report a fatal case of C. sordellii bacteremia from a perforated low rectal cancer with rectovaginal fistula.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old female presented with 10 days of abdominal pain, loose stools, and hematochezia. She developed rapidly progressive septic shock. Imaging identified a perforated rectal mass, pneumovagina, and a large pelvic abscess. She underwent fecal diversion and drainage of the pelvic abscess. Despite this i

Human infections caused by the toxin-producing, anaerobic and spore-forming bacterium Paeniclostridium sordellii are associated with a treatment-refractory toxic shock syndrome (TSS). Reproductive-age women are at increased risk for P. sordellii infection (PSI) because this organism can cause intrauterine infection following childbirth, stillbirth, or abortion. PSI-induced TSS in this setting is nearly 100% fatal, and there are no effective treatments. TcsL, or lethal toxin, is the primary virulence factor in PSI and shares 70% sequence identity with Clostridioides difficile toxin B (TcdB). We

BACKGROUND: With the current rise of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, it is important to monitor the efficacy of antimicrobials in clinical use. Paeniclostridium sordellii (previously Clostridium sordellii) is a bacterial pathogen that causes human uterine infection after spontaneous or medically induced abortion, for which mortality rates approach 100%. Prophylactic antibiotics have been recommended for individuals undergoing medically-induced abortion, one of which is doxycycline, a member of the tetracycline antibiotic family. However, tetracycline resistance had not been well characteriz

Clostridium sordellii is a spore-forming, obligately anaerobic, Gram-positive bacterium that can cause toxic shock syndrome after gynecological procedures. Although the incidence of C. sordellii infection is low, it is fatal in most cases. Since spore germination is believed to be the first step in the establishment of Bacilli and Clostridia infections, we analyzed the requirements for C. sordellii spore germination in vitro. Our data showed that C. sordellii spores require three structurally different amino acids and bicarbonate for maximum germination. Unlike the case for Bacilli species, d-

Omphalitis and the resulting septicemia contribute to perinatal mortality in several animal species. In foals, the most important causes of omphalitis are Escherichia coli and Streptococcus zooepidemicus. However to date, no information has been published about the role of Clostridium sordellii in these infections. In this paper, we describe 8 cases of perinatal mortality in foals associated with internal umbilical remnant infection by C. sordellii. The foals studied were between 12 and 21 days old at the time of death, and various breeds were represented in the group. Five of the foals were m

INTRODUCTION: Uterine clostridial myonecrosis is a rare infection associated with a high mortality rate. This report presents 2 cases of maternal mortality resulting from peripartum clostridial myonecrosis of the uterus.
CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1 is a 30-year-old woman (nullipara) who presented in labor at term with an intra-amniotic infection and fetal demise. She rapidly developed septic shock, and cesarean hysterectomy was performed for a suspected necrotizing uterine infection later identified to be Clostridium septicum. Case 2 is an adolescent who presented in septic shock following firs

BACKGROUND: The pathogenic Clostridia cause neurotoxic, histotoxic and enterotoxic infections in humans and animals. Several Clostridium species have been associated with abomasitis in ruminants. The present study aimed to investigate the frequency, and the presence of virulence genes, of Clostridium perfringens, Paeniclostridium sordellii and Clostridium septicum in lambs and goat kids with hemorrhagic abomasitis.
RESULTS: A total of 38 abomasum samples, collected from lambs and goat kids of 1 week to 1 month of age in different farms located in eastern Turkey between 2021 and 2022, were eva

The clostridia cause a spectrum of diseases in humans and animals ranging from life-threatening tetanus and botulism, uterine infections, histotoxic infections and enteric diseases, including antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and food poisoning. The symptoms of all these diseases are the result of potent protein toxins produced by these organisms. These toxins are diverse, ranging from a multitude of pore-forming toxins to phospholipases, metalloproteases, ADP-ribosyltransferases and large glycosyltransferases. The location of the toxin genes is the unifying theme of this review because with one

A natural outbreak of ulcerative enteritis-like disease associated with Clostridium sordellii was diagnosed in two commercial quail flocks. Clinical signs in the quail included anorexia, weakness, and increased mortality in the flocks. Lesions in the intestine were characterized by ulcers covered with fibrinonecrotic exudate in the small intestine and occasional hemorrhages. There were also multifocal pale areas of necrosis in the liver. Clostridium sordellii was isolated from the intestine and liver. A retrospective study of avian cases submitted to the California Animal Health and Food Safet

Toxigenic Clostridium sordellii strains are increasingly recognized to cause highly lethal infections in humans that are typified by a toxic shock syndrome (TSS). Two glucosylating toxins, lethal toxin (TcsL) and hemorrhagic toxin (TcsH) are believed to be important in the pathogenesis of TSS. While non-toxigenic strains of C. sordellii demonstrate reduced cytotoxicity in vitro and lower virulence in animal models of infection, there are few data regarding their behavior in humans. Here we report a non-TSS C. sordellii infection in the context of a polymicrobial bacterial cholangitis. The C. s

Clostridium sordellii infections pose difficult clinical challenges and are usually fatal. Most commonly, these infections occur after trauma, childbirth, and routine gynecological procedures, but they have recently been associated with medically induced abortions and injection drug use. We report 2 fatal cases, one of which was associated with minor trauma, and the other of which was associated with normal childbirth, and we summarize the clinical features of 43 additional cases of reported C. sordellii infection. Of these 45 cases, 8 (18%) were associated with normal childbirth, 5 (11%) were
