A retropancreatic celio-mesenteric paraganglioma.

Paragangliomas are extra-adrenal pheochromocytomas that arise from chromaffin cells in the sympathetic or parasympathetic neural paraganglia. Surgery remains the only curative treatment, although prominent vascularity can make excision difficult. We have recently encountered a patient with a retropancreatic celio-mesenteric paraganglioma unusually located between celiac trunk (CT) and superior mesenteric artery.

Organization and distribution of the rat subdiaphragmatic vagus and associated paraganglia.

This experiment analyzed the organization of the rat abdominal vagus. To spare delicate tissues and preserve positional information, untrimmed blocks of the subdiaphragmatic viscera (N = 22) were fixed, impregnated by using a pyridine-silver protocol, and double embedded. Each block was sectioned transversely at 7 micron, and a section every 70 micron from the diaphragm to the cardia was analyzed. The features of the section were traced and digitized for computer reconstruction. Included in the measurements were sizes and locations of bundles, fascicles, and paraganglia. The anterior and poste

Cells of the sympathoadrenal lineage: biological properties as donor tissue for cell-replacement therapies for Parkinson's disease.

Sympathoadrenal (SA) cell lineage encompasses neural crest derivatives such as sympathetic neurons, small intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells of sympathetic ganglia and adrenal medulla, and chromaffin cells of adrenal medulla and extra-adrenal paraganglia. SA autografts have been used for transplantation in Parkinson's disease (PD) for three reasons: (i) as autologous donor tissue avoids graft rejection and the need for immunosuppressant therapy, (ii) SA cells express dopaminotrophic factors such as GNDF and TGFbetas, and (iii) although most of SA cells release noradrenaline, some of them are ab

Paragangliomas Arising From the Laryngeal Paraganglia: Thyroid and Laryngeal Paragangliomas With Radiology-Pathology Correlation.

Paragangliomas are neuroendocrine tumors that arise from the embryonic neural crest cells of the extra-adrenal chromaffin and non-chromaffin cellular system. Paragangliomas arising from the laryngeal paraganglia, which occur in the thyroid and larynx, are a rare subset of paragangliomas compared to the more common locations of the carotid body, vagale, jugular, and tympanic paragangliomas. The preoperative diagnosis of both thyroid and laryngeal paragangliomas may pose a challenge due to cytological, pathological, and imaging non-specificity that overlaps with many other neoplasms. These lesio

[Paraganglioma of the posterior mediastinum (author's transl)].

The authors describe one case of paraganglioma of the posterior mediastinum successfully removed after being discovered accidentally in a young male patient who showed no symptoms attributable to the tumor. The latter was a round mass, about 6 cm in diameter, richly vascular, located in the right costomediastinal gutter. Histologically it was a functionally silent paraganglioma originating from the intrathoracic aortosympathetic paraganglia, these being part of the very numerous groups of the paragangliar system distributed segmentally into metamers, particularly in the adrenal medulla. [Functionally active tumor of the carotid body].

The clinical and biochemical pictures of a woman of 60 suffering from paroxysmal hypertension appeared to be clear evidence of a functionally active neoplasm of the sympathoadrenal tissue. A surgical operation ruled out the possibility of the tumour being localized adrenally so that the actual site of noradrenaline release was never found during the patient's lifetime. An autopsy discovered the presence of a carotid body tumor sized. 4.5X3X3 cm. The histological picture, electron microscopy as well as the positive isolation of noradrenalin all seemed to offer clear evidence of a functionally a

Functional tumors of the organ of Zuckerkandl.

Chromaffin-reacting pheochromocytomas of the adrenal medulla are the most frequently encountered functional paraganglionic neoplasms. However, extra-adrenal pheochromocytomas as well as non-chromaffin paragangliomas, including those of the carotid body and glomus jugulare, may produce symptoms from catecholamine secretion. One of the extra-adrenal sites from which these tumors arise is from a collection of para-aortic, paraganglion cells around the origin of the inferior mesenteric artery. This collection of paraganglia was described in fetuses by Zuckerkandl in 1901 and has subsequently been

Acute coronary syndrome: a rare case of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes with pheochromocytoma and medullary thyroid carcinoma.

Pheochromocytoma is a tumor arising from neuroectodermal chromaffin tissues in the adrenal gland or extra-adrenal paraganglia (paragangliomas). The prevalence of the tumor is 0.1%-0.6% in the hypertensive population, of which 10%-20% are malignant. Pheochromocytoma produces, stores, and secretes catecholamines, as well as leads to hypertensive crisis, arrhythmia, angina, and acute myocardial infarction without coronary artery diseases. We report a case of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) with a final diagnosis of multiple endocrine neoplasia with pheochromocytoma and medullary thyroid carcinoma (

Catecholamines in paraganglionic cells of the rat superior cervical ganglion: functional aspects.

In the rat SCG two types of paraganglionic cells have been identified immunohistochemically in a ratio of about 5% DBH-positive to 95% DBH-negative cells. Measurements of CAs in SIF cell clusters separated from principal neurons with the microlaser and using the technique of quantitative mass fragmentography disclosed the presence of E within paraganglionic cells, thus confirming the proposal that, besides DA, E also is stored in most cells. Following immobilization of adult rats, the majority of SIF cells revealed a time-dependent loss of formaldehyde-induced fluorescence intensity that could

Open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair with incidental finding of an extra-adrenal pheochromocytoma of the organ of Zuckerkandl.

OBJECTIVES: Pheochromocytomas are rare catecholamine-secreting neuroendocrine tumors that arise from chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla or extra-adrenal paraganglia. The most common location of these tumors is within the adrenal medulla. Extra-adrenal pheochromocytomas (EAPs) may occur in any portion of the paraganglion system. The most common location of EAPs is at the organ of Zuckerkandl, which is a collection of chromaffin cells near the origin of the inferior mesenteric artery. METHODS: We present a case of an EAP of the organ of Zuckerkandl incidentally discovered and resected duri

Peripheral chemoreceptors: postnatal development and cytochemical findings in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

The aim of the present study is to give a review of the postnatal development of peripheral chemoreceptors - carotid body, paraganglia, and pulmonary neuroendocrine cells (PNEC) - with implications in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). In the postnatal period, the hypoxic chemosensitivity of the carotid body gradually develops. Changes include proliferation of type I and II cells, increased numbers of dense core vesicles and K+ channels, and modifications of neurotransmitter/neuromodulator and receptor expression. Chromaffin paraganglia show increased expression of nitric oxide synthase and

A case of recurrence and metastasis of pheochromocytoma: a case report.

Pheochromocytomas are rare tumors that develop from chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla or from extra-adrenal paraganglia . These tumors frequently produce catecholamines, and excessive secretion can lead to a variety of symptoms, including episodic hypertension and metabolic disorders. Such complications can significantly impact cardiovascular health as well as kidney and vascular function, and there is notable concern regarding recurrence and metastasis following surgical resection. This article analyzes the case characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment of a patient with pheochromocytom

An Aberrant Case of Pheochromocytoma in a Young Adult Presenting With Secondary Hypertension: A Case Report With Review of the Literature.

Pheochromocytoma (PCC) is a rare neuroendocrine catecholamine-secreting tumour of the adrenal gland. It originates from the chromaffin cells found within the adrenal medulla or the extra-adrenal paraganglia. We present a case report of a 24-year-old female who presented with hypertension, headache, palpitations, chest pain and blurry vision. On ultrasound evaluation, a right suprarenal mass was noted, which was further evaluated using contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT). Based on our imaging findings, the patient was diagnosed with a case of right-sided pheochromocytoma. The patient was

Acute Heart Failure as a First Presentation of Pheochromocytoma Complicated with "Inverted" Takotsubo Syndrome.

Takotsubo syndrome is a rare but emerging form of acute reversible myocardial injury characterized by transient systolic LV dysfunction, often related to emotional or physical stress. Pheochromocytoma is increasingly recognised as another possible trigger. Pheochromocytoma is a rare catecholamine-secreting tumour arising from chromaffin cells within the adrenal medulla or extra-adrenal paraganglia. The pathognomonic quartet of paroxysmal hypertension, palpitations, headache, and diaphoresis is rarely present, and diagnosis is often delayed. We describe a 43-year-old formerly healthy patient wi
