KTP laser assisted excision of glomus tympanicum.

A 39-year-old female with a two-year history of mild hearing loss and discomfort on air flight descent was found to have a pulsatile mass behind an intact tympanic membrane. A suspected diagnosis of glomus tympanicum was confirmed by computed tomography (CT) scan imaging. The lesion filled the mesotympanum and hypotympanum but the jugular bony plate was intact, confirming the tympanic site of the lesion. This very vascular tumour was exposed by a tympanomeatal flap and the KTP laser used to shrink and coagulate the tumour progressively with minimal haemorrhage and blood loss. Complete excision

Paraganglia of the human recurrent laryngeal nerve.

Recurrent laryngeal nerves (RLNs) from human autopsy material were collected and prepared for light microscopy. Within five of eight investigated RLNs, paraganglia-like organs were found, the mean cross-sectional area of which was estimated to be 0.03 mm2. These organs were composed of cells resembling the type I and type II cells of the carotid body. The possible function of laryngeal nerve paraganglia is discussed.

Aortico-pulmonary bodies in the domestic fowl: ultrastructure, innervation and secretion.

In adult and immature domestic fowl, aggregations of large pale-staining cells were found in the wall of the aorta, and of the pulmonary trunk and arteries, in modified regions typified by interruption or loss of elastic laminae and smooth muscle cells. Encapsulated extramural aggregations of similar cells were identified either on the actual surface or well outside the arterial wall of the aorta, and pulmonary trunk and arteries. The electron microscope revealed that the pale cells in these intramural and extramural structures were granular cells characterised by dense-cored vesicles typicall

Cholecystokinin-like immunoreactivity in cat extra-adrenal paraganglia.

In the cat peripheral dopaminergic organs such as the carotid body, subclavian bodies, aortico-pulmonary glomera and small intensively fluorescent cell (SIF cell) clusters of the superior cervical ganglion and the nodose ganglion were found to contain cholecystokinin (CCK)-immunoreactive paraganglionic cells. Thus, the extra-adrenal paraganglionic system may serve as a model for studying peripheral interactions of CCKergic and dopaminergic mechanisms.

Relative responses of aortic body and carotid body chemoreceptors to hypotension.

Responses to acute arterial blood pressure changes of a single or a few chemoreceptor afferents from the aortic body and carotid body at constant arterial blood gases and pH were measured in 16 adult cats. During normocapnic normoxia and moderate hypoxia (arterial oxygen tension of 60 Torr) an induced hypotension of 80 Torr increased strikingly the discharge rate of all aortic chemoreceptors but not of most carotid chemoreceptors; hypotension down to the level of 50 Torr stimulated most carotid chemoreceptors only slightly. Hyperoxia eliminated the stimulatory effect of this degree of hypotens
