Systemic candidosis and concomitant aspergillosis and zygomycosis in two Amazon parakeets (Amazona aestiva).

Systemic candidosis and concomitant aspergillosis and zygomycosis were diagnosed immunohistochemically in two Amazon parakeets (Amazona aestiva). In the bird with systemic candidosis, subacute necrotic lesions were present in the lung and the gastrointestinal tract, whereas chronic giant cell-containing granulomas were located in the liver, heart, spleen and on the serosal lining of the small intestine. Although the lesions in the liver, heart and spleen most likely developed as a result of haematogenous spread, the granulomas on the serosal surface may have developed after a local transmural

Testicular functions and serum titers of LH and testosterone in methyl parathion-fed roseringed parakeets.

Adult male roseringed parakeets were fed concentrations (0, 10 or 20 microg/100g body wt./day) of methyl parathion (MP) for 5 or 10 days. There were four sampling periods for each treatment group. The first two sampling periods were after 5 or 10 days of daily dosing. In two other sampling periods, birds were given daily doses for 10 days, and sampling occurred at 5 or 10 days after the end of treatment. A significant dose- and duration-dependent reduction in the paired testicular weight, seminiferous tubular diameters, the number of tubules with healthy germ cells, plasma acetylcholinesterase

Occurrence and Molecular Typing of Giardia psittaci in Parakeets in Germany-A Case Study.

A grey-hooded parakeet (Psilopsiagon aymara) and two budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) from different owners presented with decreased activity, vomitus, and diarrhea. A microscopic examination of feces showed trophozoites of the protozoan flagellate Giardia. A commercial immunochromatographic dipstick test for Giardia sp. antigens confirmed the infection. These findings were assured by PCR of the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene and coproantigen ELISA. Sequencing of PCR products of the SSU rRNA (292 bp) and β-giardin genes (511 bp) identified Giardia psittaci as the species invo

Congestive heart failure associated with myxomatous degeneration of the left atrioventricular valve in a parakeet.

Congestive heart failure was diagnosed in a 27-year-old Indian ringneck parakeet with exercise-induced dyspnea. A grade IV/VI holosystolic murmur that radiated to the right sternal area was auscultated over the left side of the sternum. Radiography revealed progressive cardiomegaly, hepatomegaly, pulmonary edema, and accumulation of fluid within the coelomic cavity. Echocardiography revealed biatrial enlargement and enlargement of the right ventricle. Doppler recording revealed high velocity left and right atrioventricular valve regurgitation. Treatment with digoxin and furosemide alleviated c

Metagenomic Detection of Multiple Viruses in Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Birds are known to harbour many pathogens, including circovirus, herpesviruses, adenoviruses and Chlamydia psittaci. Some of these pose zoonotic risks, while others, such as beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), have a significant impact on the conservation of endangered bird species. OBJECTIVES: This study was aimed to determine the faecal virome of a group of apparently healthy Monk parakeet using high-throughput sequencing. METHODS: Fresh faecal samples were collected from four Monk parakeets at a pet shop in Melbourne, Australia. Virus enrichment and nucleic acid extraction

First identification of Cryptosporidium meleagridis in wild white-eyed parakeet (Psittacara leucophthalmus).

In this research, we investigated the genetic diversity of Cryptosporidium spp. in 65 free-living white-eyed parakeets (Psittacara leucophthalmus) from the central-eastern region of São Paulo state, Brazil. Using real-time nested PCR of the 18S rRNA gene and conventional nested PCR of the actin and heat shock protein (HSP-70) genes, two samples were positive for Cryptosporidium spp., representing an prevalence of 3.08% (95% CI: 0.85-10.54%). However, oocysts of this protozoan were not observed through coproparasitological examination, nor were clinical signs characteristic of cryptosporidiosis

Vasculitis Associated with Parrot Bornavirus 4 Infection in a Rose-Crowned Parakeet (Pyrrhurarhodocephala).

A 3-month-old, female rose-crowned parakeet (Pyrrhura rhodocephala) was found dead after a 24-h course of lethargy and passing blood-tinged faeces. Fine white streaks were seen in the pectoral muscles on necropsy. Microscopic examination revealed typical lesions of avian ganglioneuritis and vascular necrosis in the pectoral muscles, myocardium, kidneys, air sacs, adrenal glands, pancreas and thyroid gland. These lesions were characterized by mural fibrinoid necrosis of small and medium-calibre arteries and arterioles, associated with lymphoplasmacytic inflammation, necrosis, atrophy and fibros

Radiographic evidence of atherosclerosis of the descending aorta in a grey-cheeked parakeet (Brotogeris pyrrhopterus).

A 16-year-old male grey-cheeked parakeet (Brotogeris pyrrhopterus) was presented for dyspnea and decreased activity. The bird's diet was primarily table food, with a large proportion of animal products. Radiographs revealed a linear mineralized structure in the plane of the aorta and an enlarged hepatocardiac silhouette. Left atrial and left ventricular enlargement and a left ventricular systolic dysfunction were diagnosed by echocardiography. The bird's condition progressively declined, and it died 5 days after presentation. A postmortem examination revealed marked atherosclerosis of the aort

First record of Ornithonyssus bursa (Berlese, 1888) (Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae) parasitizing invasive monk parakeets in Santiago, Chile.

Myiopsitta monachus is an invasive psittacine with wide distribution due to the pet trade. Its large communal nests and synanthropic nature contribute to its successful colonization of cities, from where it seems to be expanding in range and numbers. This is relevant with regard to pathogens that invasive species may harbor, especially when host populations thrive. We aimed to identify an abundant mite found in invasive monk parakeet chicks that had been collected in Santiago during 2017 and 2018. Through morphological and molecular identification of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene, we confirmed th

A rare case of soft tissue leiomyosarcoma with liver metastases in a rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri).

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS), a relatively rare malignant tumor that arises from smooth muscle cells in various soft tissues, was found in a 3-year-old female rose-ringed parakeet. A clinical examination revealed a mass extending from the right thigh region to the caudal aspect of the right abdomen, accompanied by swelling, as demonstrated by radiography. Gross appearance of the tumor showed a well-circumscribed yellowish and nodular round mass with a creamy structure and gelatinous surface. After excision of the mass, histological examination revealed a spindle-cell mass infiltrating the thigh muscle

'Atypical pneumonia' due to parakeet sensitivity: bird fancier's lung in a 10-year-old girl.

p6trinsic allergic alveolitis is rare in childhood, with most of the cases reported due to exposure to avian precipitins (Stiem et al. 1966; Dinda et al. 1969; Chandra & Everly Jones 1972; El-Hefny et al. 1980). We report a 10-year-old girl with bird fancier's lung, and suggest that environmental antigens should be sought in children presenting with non-resolving chest disease.

Medical Management of a Cervical Thymoma by Radiation Therapy in an Indian Ringneck Parakeet (Psittacula krameri).

Thymomas are uncommon in birds and management is challenging because of tumor characteristics such as growth location and local invasiveness, limiting surgical and chemotherapeutic options. A 20-year-old female Indian ringneck parakeet (Psittacula krameri) was referred for radiation therapy because of an increase in size of a right-sided cervical mass. The mass was tentatively diagnosed as a thymoma after biopsy and incomplete surgical resection 3 months previously. Therapeutic management in this parakeet included 10 treatments of palliative radiation therapy over the course of 1 month. The tu

Case Series of Disseminated Xanthogranulomatosis in Red-crowned Parakeets (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae) with Detection of Psittacine Adenovirus 2 (PsAdV-2).

Xanthogranulomatosis is a common dermatological disease in birds. This form of inflammation, possibly associated with lipometabolic disorders, can also be seen in visceral organs, which as yet has only rarely been described in avian medicine. In general, diseases related to impaired lipid metabolism are frequently reported in avian medicine, with hepatic steatosis and atherosclerosis being the most common. In human medicine, infectious agents-especially some strains of adenovirus-were implicated in contributing to lipometabolic disorders; this has also been described for chicken. Here, a case

Naturally occurring psittacid alphaherpesvirus 3 and probable adenovirus coinfection in an Indian ringneck parakeet in the United States.

Psittacid alphaherpesvirus 3 (PsAHV-3) is a rarely reported virus that has been associated with pneumonia in psittacine birds. A 5-mo-old Indian ringneck parakeet (syn. rose-ringed parakeet; Psittacula krameri) was euthanized after developing torticollis and lethargy. Postmortem examination of the parakeet revealed severe pneumonia with syncytial cells containing eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies (INIBs) in the respiratory epithelium. Gene sequencing of total DNA extraction detected PsAHV-3 in the frozen lung. The pancreas had severe lytic necrosis, with the remaining parenchymal cell

Electrochemotherapy for the treatment of an incompletely excised subcutaneous low-grade epithelioid hemangioendothelioma in a budgerigar parakeet (Melopsittacus undulatus).

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous tumors are rarely described in avian and are frequently of viral origin. Solid tumors of vascular origin are seldom reported and usually result in difficult management by surgery alone. We describe the outcome of a subcutaneous low-grade epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) treated with the combination of surgery and electrochemotherapy. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 10-year-old male budgerigar parakeet (Melopsittacus undulatus) was referred for evaluation of a 2-month non-healing exophytic mass on the left wing. The bird was bright, alert, and responsive, with a 2 × 1 cm prolif

The pineal gland, but not melatonin, is associated with the termination of seasonal testicular activity in an annual reproductive cycle in roseringed parakeet Psittacula krameri.

The role of the pineal gland and its hormone melatonin in the regulation of annual testicular events was investigated for the first time in a psittacine bird, the roseringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri). Accordingly, the testicular responsiveness of the birds was evaluated following surgical pinealectomy with or without the exogenous administration of melatonin and the experimental manipulations of the endogenous levels of melatonin through exposing the birds to continuous illumination. An identical schedule was followed during the four reproductive phases, each characterizing a distinct test

Castration and testosterone induced changes in the pinealocytes of roseringed parakeet, Psittacula krameri, during different phases of the annual testicular cycle.

The pinealocytes in male roseringed parakeets (Psittacula krameri) were studied following bilateral castration and/or therapeutic administration of testosterone during the preparatory (June-July), progressive (Nov.-Dec.), pre-breeding (Jan.-Feb.) and breeding (March-April) phases of the annual testicular cycle. The responses of the pineal to either treatment were found to be almost identical throughout the investigation. In each reproductive phase, the pineal appeared to be hypertrophied following castration and the effect was reversed by therapeutic administration of testosterone, while hormo
