Frontoethmoidal mucocele presenting with ocular manifestations.

Mucocele of the paranasal sinuses is a slowly expanding benign lesion developing when there is impeded physiological drainage of the mucous produced by the epithelial lining of the paranasal sinuses, at the sinus ostium, which is an opening that connects the sinus to the nasal cavity. Aetiologies of ostial occlusion include infection, allergy, trauma, previous surgery, benign neoplasm (osteoma or fibrous dysplasia), and malignant or metastatic tumours. Mucoceles commonly develop in the frontal sinus (70-80 per cent), followed by the ethmoid (25 per cent), frontoethmoidal (10-14 per cent), and

Meningiomas of the paranasal sinuses.

Extracranial meningiomas are rare tumors, comprising approximately 2% of all meningiomas. Previously reported sites include the orbit, parapharyngeal space, and rarely, the paranasal sinuses. A retrospective chart review of patients with meningiomas was performed over the last 25 years, and three patients were identified with meningiomas involving the paranasal sinuses. The locations included the frontal sinus, the ethmoid sinus, and the sphenoid sinus. Presenting symptoms included facial pain and nasal obstruction; two patients noted facial swelling. Diagnosis was established via endoscopic t

Head and neck manifestations of plasma cell neoplasms.

Multiple myeloma, solitary plasmacytoma of bone, and extramedullary plasmacytoma are plasma cell neoplasms. They represent distinct manifestations of a disease continuum, whereby the clinical findings are critical to diagnosis. Plasma cell neoplasms are histologically similar, and distinguishing one from the other has significant implications for treatment and survival. Plasma cell neoplasms are relatively unusual malignancies of the head and neck region. We present a case series of plasma cell neoplasms involving the skull base, paranasal sinus, larynx, and mandible as an introduction to a co

Mucocele of the Paranasal Sinuses: Retrospective Analysis of a Series of Eight Cases.

BACKGROUND: Paranasal sinus mucoceles are epithelium-lined cystic masses usually resulting from obstruction of sinus ostia. They most frequently occur in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses. The etiology is not clarified, but the most common identifiable cause of mucoceles following functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), trauma, neoplasms, and allergy. The clinical symptoms of mucocele vary and are not specific, the most common being ophthalmic symptoms and headache, impinging on adjacent orbital structures, and causing ophthalmic sequelae such as double vision, commonly followed by orbital s

Giant Ethmoid Sinus Osteoma Protruding into the Maxillary Sinus.

Ethmoid sinus osteomas are rare, benign, encapsulated neoplasms of the paranasal region. They can lead to various complications such as sinusitis, orbital cellulitis, proptosis, and diplopia. The treatment protocol of these lesions changed remarkably as powered instrumentation of functional endoscopic sinus surgery evolved and otolaryngologists gained experience. Here, the authors report a 30-year-old female who was diagnosed with a giant right-sided ethmoid sinus osteoma and discuss diagnostic and treatment modalities of these lesions in consonance with the current literature.

Neuroendocrine tumor G1 in sphenoid sinuses: A case report.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) commonly arise in the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas or lungs. Among NENs, there have been some reports of neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) occurring in the paranasal sinuses, but neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the paranasal sinuses are particularly uncommon, with only a few cases report available. Furthermore, there have been no comprehensive reports focusing on imaging findings. We herein report a case of paranasal sinus NET G1, along with a literature review of the imaging characteristics. The patient was a 64-year-old woman who was asymptomatic and had been

Isolated third-nerve palsy associated with frontal sinus mucocele.

Isolated third-nerve palsies are seen most commonly with aneurysms, vascular disease, trauma, or neoplasms (1-5). Sinus mucoceles have been known to cause orbital symptoms including proptosis and cranial nerve palsies. Rarely, an oculomotor nerve abnormality may be seen in the setting of mucoceles of the paranasal sinuses. We describe an unusual case of an isolated pupil-sparing third-nerve palsy as the presenting sign of a frontal sinus mucocele. Emphasis is placed on the discussion of sinus mucoceles and their relation to orbital symptoms.

Huge sphenoid sinus olfactory neuroblastoma: a case report.

Intranasal or paranasal sinus olfactory neuroblastoma is a rare malignant neoplasm of olfactory neuroepithelial origin, accounting for approximately 5% of paranasal sinus cancers. Most of the presenting symptoms include nasal obstruction, nasal bleeding, anosmia, rhinorrhea, and headache. In this present report, we describe a 79-year-old man who presented with bilateral nasal congestion for more than 1 year. Nasoendoscopy showed a huge, smooth, mucosal tumor in the nasopharynx with extension to the posterior nasal septum. The tumor was completely resected under endonasal endoscopy and the path

Sphenoid sinus neuroendocrine carcinoma.

Neuroendocrine tumours are epithelial neoplasms with predominant neuroendocrine differentiation. The nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are rare locations for neuroendocrine carcinomas, and only a few related papers have been published in the literature to date. Here we present the case of a 64-year-old male with neuroendocrine carcinoma of the sphenoid sinus, along with the main MRI findings.

Inflammatory pseudotumour of the maxillary sinus mimicking malignancy.

Inflammatory pseudotumours of the paranasal sinuses are rare entities and can be easily confused with aggressive malignant tumours. In this report we describe the characteristic behavior of inflammatory pseudotumours in the maxillary sinus. We present a case of a 47-year-old Caucasian woman, who presented in our ENT department because of progressive nasal obstruction, epistaxis, and epiphora. The clinical as well as the radiological findings suggested a maxillary sinus neoplasm, most probably of malignant nature. The histopathological examination showed an inflammatory pseudotumour of the maxi

Primary Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma of frontal sinus diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology.

UNLABELLED: We present a rare case of primary non-Hodgkins Lymphoma of the frontal sinus diagnosed by Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). FNAC is a safe, simple, rapid and effective technique that could be used to diagnose lesions even in unusual sites like paranasal sinuses with effective radiological guidance. Neoplasms of the frontal sinus could be easily misdiagnosed as an inflammatory process clinically. FNAC is a simple test to rule out a neoplasm. A review of a single case including radiographic, clinical, and pathologic findings was done, followed by a discussion on the pathologica

Maxillary antrolith: a rare cause of the recurrent sinusitis.

Introduction. An antrolith is a calcified mass within the maxillary sinus. The origin of the nidus of calcification may be extrinsic (foreign body in sinus) or intrinsic (stagnant mucus and fungal ball). Most antroliths are small and asymptomatic. Larger ones may present as sinusitis with symptoms like pain and discharge. Case Report. We report a case of a 47-year-old lady who presented with heaviness on the left side of the face and loosening of the left 2nd molar tooth since two months. CT scan of the osteomeatal complex and paranasal sinuses showed an opacification of bilateral maxillary si

Recurrent adenoid cystic carcinoma of paranasal sinuses: A rare case report.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a distinct salivary gland neoplasm that predominantly occurs in the minor salivary gland. ACC is an uncommon tumor that progress slowly affecting 5% of paranasal sinuses with high distant metastasis rate in advance stages. This salivary gland tumor is difficult to diagnose both clinically and histopathologically due to its indolent presentation and diverse histopathological patterns. Hence, immunohistochemistry plays a decisive role in diagnosing this tumor. A recurrent case of ACC of paranasal sinuses in the maxillary sinus of a 41-year-old female patient wit

Intracranial extension of inflammatory pseudotumor of the orbit. Case report.

Orbital pseudotumors are inflammatory lesions of the orbit of unknown etiology, which initially mimic an orbital neoplasm. Involvement of the other orbit is uncommon, and extension into the paranasal sinus rare. Intracranial extension of pseudotumor of the orbit is previously unreported. This is a case report of a patient with pseudotumor of the orbit with intracranial extension. The literature of the subject is reviewed.

Solitary fibrous tumor arising from the sphenoid sinus.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon neoplasm that usually arises from the pleura. To our knowledge, only 30 cases of SFTs in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses have been reported in the literature. We describe an SFT that arose from the right sphenoid sinus and extended to the nasal cavity and epipharynx. The tumor was completely removed by endoscopic sinus surgery without complication. The patient is taking an uneventful course without any evidence of recurrence of the disease 8 months after surgery now.
