Paranoid thinking, suspicion, and risk for aggression: a neurodevelopmental perspective.

This article represents an effort to extend our understanding of paranoia or suspicion and its development by integrating findings across clinical, developmental, and neuroscience literatures. We first define "paranoia" or paranoid thought and examine its prevalence across typically and atypically developing individuals and theoretical perspectives regarding its development and maintenance. We then briefly summarize current ideas regarding the neural correlates of adaptive, appropriately trusting interpersonal perception, social cognition, and behavior across development. Our focus shifts subs

Subclinical paranoid beliefs and enhanced neural response during processing of unattractive faces.

The perception of faces and consequent social inferences are fundamental for interpersonal communication. While facial expression is important for interindividual communication, constitutional and acquired features are crucial for basic emotions of attraction or repulsion. An emotional bias in face processing has been shown in schizophrenia, but the neurobiological mechanisms are unclear. Studies on the interaction between face processing and the emotional state of healthy individuals may help to elucidate the pathogenesis of the paranoid syndrome in psychosis. This study addressed facial attr

[Pharmacokinetic behavioral changes of methamphetamine in methamphetamine-sensitized animal model].

There has been an increased population of users and abusers of amphetamines, including methamphetamines (METH), in the past two decades, and this has become a crucial social problem in Japan. METH abusers show a paranoid schizophrenia-like syndrome, including paranoid hallucination and delusion, and repeated exposure to these drugs will enhance their effects; i.e. the behavioral and reinforcing effects of abusing drugs became progressively and irreversibly developed (behavioral sensitization) in humans and in experimental animals. Although numerous neuropsychopharmacological/neurochemical stud

[The analysis of schizophrenic inpatients' escape behavior].

To study the escaping behavior of 1030 schizophrenic in-patients, "Brief Rating Scale for Dangerous Behavior of In-patient" was used to asses them within their first week hospitalization from May 1994 to March 1996. The result showed that 276 (26.8%) patients had escaping behavior. The patients with paranoid schizophrenia had higher rate of escaping behavior. There was no correlation being found between sex, age, duration of illness, and escaping behavior. The patients with the history of such behavior were more likely to escape from ward (41.9%). The suggestion for preventing such behavior we

Cannabis psychosis and paranoid schizophrenia.

The initial clinical symptoms of 25 consecutive cases of cannabis psychosis of the paranoid type and 25 consecutive cases of paranoid schizophrenia were studied and compared, in order to delineate features that would enable a differentiation of the two conditions. It was observed that the patients with cannabis psychosis substantially differed in terms of behavioral manifestations. Most of these patients were violent and panicky and demonstrated bizzare behavior, but they possessed some insight into the nature of their illness. Schizophrenic patients manifested these disturbances and character

The impact of rumination on state paranoid ideation in a nonclinical sample.

Cognitive-behavioral models of paranoia have emphasized the potential role of perseverative thinking styles, such as rumination or worry, in the development, maintenance and exacerbation of paranoid beliefs. This study aimed to experimentally test the hypothesis that rumination may play a role in the maintenance or exacerbation of state paranoid ideation. Following a paranoia induction, 37 nonclinical participants were randomly assigned to either a rumination task or a distraction control condition. In accord with main hypothesis, rumination was associated with maintained levels of paranoia, w

Childhood predictors of cluster A personality disorder traits in adolescence: a seven-wave birth cohort study.

Cluster A personality disorders are hypothesized to have their origins in childhood, but little prospective research exists to support this contention. We investigated whether factors intrinsic to the child, social-relational and environmental factors, and symptoms of other psychopathologies in childhood predict paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal personality disorder traits at age 16. A sample from two birth cohorts in Trondheim, Norway (n = 1,077; 50.9% female) was examined biennially from age 4-16. Cluster A personality disorder traits were assessed with the Structured Clinical Interview fo

A case study on a severe paranoid personality disorder client treated with metacognitive interpersonal therapy.

Paranoid personality disorder (PPD) is a severe condition, lacking specialized and empirically supported treatment. To provide the clinician with insights into how to treat this condition, we present a case study of a 61-year-old man with severe PPD who presented with ideas of persecution, emotionally charged hostility, and comorbid antisocial personality disorder. The client was treated with 6 months of Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy, which included: creating a shared formulation of his paranoid attitudes; trying to change his inner self-image of self-as-inadequate and his interpersonal

Modification of behavioral responses induced by electrical stimulation of the ventral tegmental area in rats.

To investigate the role of the ventral tegmental area (VTA), a source of the mesolimbic dopaminergic pathway, in paranoid psychosis, a detailed analysis of the behavioral responses induced by electrical stimulation of the VTA was made. Abnormal behavior induced by bilateral high-frequency stimulation of the VTA consisted of two components: forward locomotion and exploration. Similar responses were obtained when the nucleus accumbens (NAC) or prefrontal cortex (PFC) were stimulated. The expression of behavioral responses to stimulation was significantly attenuated by dopamine (DA) receptor or a

Mental disorder in Vladimir Putin: Hypothesis.

Both somatic and psychiatric abnormalities are not uncommon among politicians. Clinical insights may help to understand their suboptimal decisions and behavior. If a leader is psychotic while other functions are more or less intact, he or she can preserve abilities to remain in a position of power. Grave consequences occur when paranoid ideas persist in a dictator, so that delusions are put into life. Some people suffering from paranoid personality disorder are belligerent against delusional goals. Governments in democracy are more transparent; therefore, it is less probable that power would b

BDNF val66met polymorphism is associated with age at onset and intensity of symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia in a Polish population.

The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is one of the candidate genes for schizophrenia. There is evidence that val66met polymorphism may be involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The authors genotyped val66met (rs6265) polymorphism of the BDNF gene in 208 inpatients with paranoid schizophrenia and 254 control subjects in a Polish population. There was no association between val66met polymorphism and development of paranoid schizophrenia in either men or women. However, an association was found between this polymorphism and age at onset and psychopathology of paranoid schizophr

Abuse of "BRON": a Japanese OTC cough suppressant solution containing methylephedrine, codeine, caffeine and chlorpheniramine.

1. The paper describes the mental disturbances of 44 abusive cases of "BRON," an over-the-counter (OTC) cough suppressant solution containing methylephedrine, codeine, caffeine, and chlorpheniramine. 2. Major psychiatric symptoms observed included hallucinatory-paranoid state and affective disorder. There also were groups which exhibited a combination of the two states and abuse only. 3. The hallucinatory-paranoid state group had a relatively small BRON usage amount, short usage term and few withdrawal symptoms. The affective disorder group, in contrast, had large usage amount, longer usage te

Cognitive-behavioral therapy of delusions: mental imagery within a goal-directed framework.

Central to psychotic disorders, delusions are associated with disability and often respond inadequately to pharmacotherapy. Cognitive-behavioral treatments have been developed over the last 20 years that successfully address delusions. However, meta-analyses suggest only a modest improvement in psychotic symptoms. Because delusions share considerable overlap with anxiety, adapting principles and techniques that have demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of anxiety disorders might improve the impact of cognitive-behavioral treatment of delusions. We report a case illustrating a cognitive-behav

The role of neurotrophic factors in psychostimulant-induced behavioral and neuronal plasticity.

Several neurotrophic factors influence the development, maintenance and survival of dopaminergic neurons in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS), including neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and glial derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). This review focuses on the role of these neurotrophic factors in psychostimulant-induced behavioral sensitization, a form of dopamine-mediated neuronal plasticity that models aspects of paranoid schizophrenia as well as drug craving among psychostimulan

Frontal cortex reactivity differentiates between schizophrenic subtypes: auditory ERP-evidence.

OBJECTIVES: To extend the hypothesis that late auditory EP shifts represent pathophysiologcial markers in schizophrenia. METHODS: Early negative (±100 μs) and late positive (>300 ms) auditory oddball and CNV responses are topographically compared in 3 medicated schizophrenic subtypes. RESULTS: Only late cortical responses differentiate between paranoid, residual and disorganised schizophrenia. Core features of the deficit residual state encompass low-voltage N2P3 responses and missing central initial CNV components. Both paranoid and disorganised schizophrenics show a distinctive reactivity

Critical issues in assessing the behavioral effects of amphetamine.

Amphetamine induces a behavioral syndrome in mammals that includes a variety of repetitive behaviors. An integral component of this syndrome in humans is the presence of a thought disturbance not unlike that manifest in idiopathic paranoid schizophrenia. The consistent pattern of behavioral changes produced by amphetamine across species, when considered in light of the psychosis it elicits in humans, has suggested to many that these drug-induced changes in animals may provide a model of the endogenous psychosis in humans. Amphetamine-induced changes in open-field behavior in the rat have been

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on perceptions of social relationships, negative affect, and paranoid ideation.

The COVID-19 pandemic contributed to worsening mental health across the globe. The pandemic may have been especially impactful on those experiencing heightened psychosis spectrum symptomatology given greater pre-pandemic social isolation and increased vulnerability to stress. Yet, few studies exploring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on perceptions of social relationships and mental health have sampled individuals high in psychosis spectrum symptomatology, including those with psychosis spectrum disorders. Utilizing a mixed transdiagnostic community sample enriched for psychotic spectrum d

The relationship between personality psychopathology and aggressive behavior in research volunteers.

Theorists and clinicians have long believed that personality psychopathology is a risk factor for aggressive behavior. Previous investigations in this area, however, have provided mixed results. In this study, the relationship between personality psychopathology and aggressive behavior was examined in 137 research volunteers. The influences of gender and coexisting major mental disorders were statistically controlled. Aggressive behavior was associated with criteria for 7 of the 11 personality disorders listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd ed., rev.). Except
