Survey of parasites in dairy goats.

The survey was performed to study prevalence and intensity of parasitic infection in goats. Fecal samples were examined from 336 goats in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. On the basis of fecal egg, oocyst, and larval counts, the following results were obtained. Eimerian oocysts were found in 100% of the fecal samples and the greatest fecal oocyst counts were found in goats under 6 months of age. Strongyle eggs and Strongyloides eggs were present in 76% and 20%, respectively, of the samples. Moniezia eggs were found in 9%, Trichuris eggs in 4%, and Nematodirus eggs in 1% of the

[Evaluation of ovoscopic methods in the diagnosis of invasion with the tapeworm, Taenia saginata].

During the period between 1979-1988 the authors examined 84 patients with the diagnosis of T. saginata by three ovoscopic methods to detect ova of tapeworms (Hein's method of faecal smears, Fust's method supplemented by examination of the sediment, and Graham-Brumpt's method of examination of the perianal area by means of an adhesive PVC tape. Of the mentioned methods Hein's method combined with Graham-Brumpt's method was most useful, as they detected ova of T. saginata during a single examination in 77 probands (91.7%). By Hein's method alone 8 positive (9.5%) cases were detected, by Graham-B

Variations in the excretion patterns of helminth eggs in two sympatric mouse lemur species (Microcebus murinus and M. ravelobensis) in northwestern Madagascar.

Many factors can influence the parasite load of animal hosts, but integrative studies that simultaneously investigate several factors are still rare in many taxonomic groups. This study investigates the influence of host species, host population density, parasite transmission mode, sex, and two temporal (month, year) factors on gastrointestinal parasite prevalence and fecal egg counts of two endemic primate species from Madagascar, Microcebus ravelobensis and Microcebus murinus. A total of 646 fecal samples were available and analyzed from three dry seasons. Six different helminth egg morphoty

Parasites of the brush-tailed rock-wallaby (Petrogale penicillata).

The brush-tailed rock-wallaby (Petrogale penicillata) is listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Parasitic diseases have been proposed as possible contributing factors to the decline of the species, but very little is known about the effects of parasites on this host. This study determined the antibody prevalence of the protist Toxoplasma gondii in a wild brush-tailed rock-wallaby population from three neighboring colonies in southeast Queensland, Australia. Fecal egg and oocyst count, tick count, severity of skin rash,

Gastrointestinal Parasites of Vervet Monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) in a High Latitude, Semi-Arid Region of South Africa.

Given a changing climate and large-scale human migration, understanding infectious diseases in wildlife and the factors that drive the spread of these diseases is becoming increasingly important. Owing to the close phylogenetic relationship between nonhuman primates and humans, primate parasites are of particular interest due to the potential for zoonotic disease transmission and for the study of social transmission within gregarious social groups. There is a wide range of social and environmental factors that influence the prevalence and transmission of pathogens, and identifying these, and t

Strongyloides westeri worm and egg counts in naturally infected young horses.

Strongyloides westeri is a threadworm parasite found in the small intestine mainly in foals at up to about 4 months of age. This parasite is associated with small intestinal enteritis and diarrhea as well as skin irritation and a clinical syndrome called "frenzied behavior" due to percutaneous invasion. The aim of this study was to investigate S. westeri parasite burdens in age groups older than the initial lactogenic transmission phase. Secondary aims were to examine the impact of host age and gender on worm burden and egg output in naturally infected foals. Thirteen foals were enrolled in th

Camel gastrointestinal helminths in selected districts of Fafan zone, eastern Ethiopia.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the incidence and prevalence of helminths in camels in the Jigjiga and Gursum districts of Fafan zone, Somali regional state of Ethiopia. Fecal samples were collected from individual animals and analyzed using a McMaster fecal flotation method. Fecal samples were mixed with water and centrifuged to remove excess debris prior to mixing with flotation solution and performing the McMaster. For each sample, the number and types of parasite eggs present were recorded. 77.3% of examined camels were found harboring gastrointestinal parasites. Trichost

[Wild rodents as experimental models of schistosomiasis mansoni: Akodon arviculoides (Rodentia: Cricetidae)].

The experimental infection of A. arviculoides through different routes of penetration of Schistosoma mansoni cercariae (Transcutaneous and subcutaneous) was studied by the kinetics of egg elimination in stools, by the recovery and localization of adult worms (in the portal system and the mesenteric veins) and through the quantitative egg count. It was shown that A. arviculoides infection is similar to the albino mice which served as control in relation to the efficiency of penetration routes, to the adult worms habitat and the egg count. These results suggest that other aspects of the host-par

Diagnosis of helminths depends on worm fecundity and the distribution of parasites within hosts.

Helminth transmission and morbidity are dependent on the number of mature parasites within a host; however, observing adult worms is impossible for many natural infections. An outstanding challenge is therefore relating routine diagnostics, such as faecal egg counts, to the underlying worm burden. This relationship is complicated by density-dependent fecundity (egg output per worm reduces due to crowding at high burdens) and the skewed distribution of parasites (majority of helminths aggregated in a small fraction of hosts). We address these questions for the carcinogenic liver fluke Opisthorc

Implementation and evaluation of a strategic parasite control program for captive exotic ungulates.

A parasite control program was designed for greater than 1,200 exotic ungulates maintained in mixed-species enclosures at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. Three strategically-timed anthelmintic treatments were given during 1988-1989, and their success was evaluated by monitoring pretreatment and posttreatment fecal egg counts. Adequate parasite control was achieved for animals in 52 ungulate species, as evidenced by low pretreatment egg counts and the absence of egg-shedding after treatment. However, animals belonging to 11 species in the subfamilies Antilopinae, Hippotraginae, and Caprinae wer

Dynamics of Parascaris and Strongylus spp. parasites in untreated juvenile horses.

Parasite control in foals is of utmost importance due to the high susceptibility to parasitic infection and disease in this age group. Foals are commonly co-infected with strongyle and ascarid parasites, which complicate parasite control strategies. The present study retrospectively investigated necropsy records of foals born into a university herd kept without anthelmintic treatment since 1979. The aims were to statistically analyze the relationship between fecal egg counts, worm burdens, foal age, sex, and season with specific focus on Parascaris and Strongylus spp. A total of 83 foals born

Prevalence and seasonal dynamic of gastrointestinal parasites in equids in France during two years.

Grazing equids are constantly exposed to three clinically important gastrointestinal parasites (small strongyles/cyathostomins, Anoplocephala spp. and Parascaris spp.). Knowledge of the local seasonal dynamic of these parasitic infections is important for constructing a sustainable parasite control program with a rational number of anthelmintic treatments. However, studies describing these patterns are sparse in France. In this context, a two-year study was carried out to assess i) the seasonal dynamic and variability of strongyle faecal egg counts (FEC) and infective larvae (L3) counts on pas

Preliminary evaluation of a novel, fully automated, Telenostic device for rapid field-diagnosis of cattle parasites.

New ideas for diagnostics in clinical parasitology are needed to overcome some of the difficulties experienced in the widespread adoption of detection methods for gastrointestinal parasites in livestock. Here we provide an initial evaluation of the performance of a newly developed automated device (Telenostic) to identify and quantify parasitic elements in fecal samples. This study compared the Telenostic device with the McMaster and Mini-FLOTAC for counting of strongyle eggs in a fecal sample. Three bovine fecal samples were examined, in triplicate, on each of the three fecal egg-counting dev

Schistosomiasis in Saudi Arabian recruits. A morbidity study based on quantitative egg excretion.

We surveyed stool and urine specimens from 245 Saudi Arabian trainees for parasites. Schistosoma mansoni eggs were found in the stool in 66 (26.9%) and S. haematobium eggs were recovered from the urine in 1 (0.4%). Additional parasites were recovered in 167 (68.2%) of the survey group and were not more common in those with schistosomiasis (P greater than .10). Schistosome egg counts ranged from 0--6,320 eggs/g feces (mean 447.9). When patients with high egg counts (over 400 eggs/g) were compared with uninfected controls, abdominal complaints and fatigue were found to be more frequent (P less t
