Role of the parasympathetic nervous system in cardioprotection by remote hindlimb ischaemic preconditioning.

This investigation was designed to determine the participation of the vagus nerve and muscarinic receptors in the remote ischaemic preconditioning (rIPC) mechanism. New Zealand rabbits were anaesthetized, and the femoral artery was dissected. After 30 min of monitoring, the hearts were isolated and subjected to 30 min of global no-flow ischaemia and 180 min of reperfusion (non-rIPC group). The ventricular function was evaluated, considering the left ventricular developed pressure and the left ventricular end-diastolic pressure. In the rIPC group, the rabbits were subjected to three cycles of h

Non-invasive Recording of Parasympathetic Nervous System Activity on Auricular Vagal Nerve Branch.

The function of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) influences most of the physiological mechanisms. The popular non-invasive method to estimate the activities of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is the heart rate variability (HRV). However, the HRV cannot provide real-time information of the ANS function. The skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA) is a novel method to evaluate sympathetic nerve system (SNS) activity. The SKNA technique has shown promise in clinical applications but is limited to evaluating SNS activities. To date, a direct non-invasive method for measuring the parasympatheti

Effects of prenatal opioid exposure on infant sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system activity.

Prenatal opioid exposure has been associated with developmental problems, including autonomic nervous system dysregulation. However, little is known about the effects of prenatal opioid exposure on the autonomic nervous system beyond the first days of life, particularly across both the parasympathetic and sympathetic branches, and when accounting for exposure to other substances. The present study examined the effects of prenatal exposure to opioid agonist therapy (OAT, e.g., methadone) and other opioids on infant autonomic nervous system activity at rest and in response to a social stressor (

Atrial fibrillation increases sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons in the intrinsic cardiac nervous system.

BACKGROUND: Chronic atrial fibrillation (AF) leads to heterogeneous autonomic nerve innervation termed neural remodeling. The quantitative changes in neural density as a function of autonomic remodeling and its association with sustained AF has not been previously determined. METHOD AND RESULTS: Seven dogs (paced group) were chronically paced with electrodes sutured to the epicardium of left atrial appendages. Seven dogs (control animals) were not paced. All paced dogs developed sustained AF by 5 weeks of pacing. The fat pads on the atrial epicardium containing ganglionated plexuses (GP) were

Substance Use is Associated With College Students' Acute Parasympathetic Nervous System Responses to Challenge.

College students use substances for varied reasons, including to cope with stress. The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) regulates bodily functions to promote energy conservation (the 'rest and digest' response), and individuals differ in their physiological sensitivity to challenge. It remains unclear whether greater PNS responses (i.e., declines in PNS activity, termed vagal withdrawal) to challenge could suggest difficulty regulating and thereby confer risk for using substances in community samples. We hypothesised that lower resting PNS activity and greater PNS responses to a challenge

Heart rate variability in atrial fibrillation: The balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the commonest abnormal heart rhythm with significant related morbidity and mortality. Several pathophysiologic mechanisms have been advocated to explain the onset of AF. There has been increasing evidence that abnormalities of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) that includes sympathetic, parasympathetic and intrinsic neural network are involved in the pathogenesis of AF. This review will consider the anatomical and pathophysiological concepts of the cardiac neuronal network and discuss how it can be investigated. DESIGN: Relevant articles for this revie

Role of the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system in digitalis intoxication: electrocardiographic and histological study.

The role of the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system (ANS) in digoxin intoxication was investigated in atropine pretreated conscious rabbits. Both the electrocardiographic registration and the histologic analysis indicated possible prevention of lethal arrhythmias by atropine pretreatment. The hearts of animals pretreated with atropine appeared less damaged, since they presented only a light cytoplasmic vacuolization. It was evident that the administration of digoxin without atropine pretreatment provoked dramatic signs of digitalis intoxication followed by animal death. Myocardia of these

The interrelationship of morphine and the parasympathetic nervous system in digoxin-induced arrhythmias in the guinea-pig.

1. The role of the parasympathetic nervous system and the effect of morphine on cardiac arrhythmias induced by digitalis was assessed in guinea-pigs that had digitalis arrhythmias produced by digoxin 50 micrograms/kg intravenously plus 500 micrograms/kg per h. 2. Morphine produced a dose-dependent rightward shift in the relationship between digoxin dose and arrhythmias. Morphine 5 mg/kg subcutaneously (s.q.) was associated with significantly (P less than 0.05) higher digoxin doses both at the onset of ventricular arrhythmias and at development of fatal arrhythmias compared with the control gro

Parasympathetic Nervous System Reactivity Moderates Associations Between Children's Executive Functioning and Social and Academic Competence.

This study examined whether children with poor executive functioning (EF) evidenced less social and academic impairments, compared to other children, if they demonstrated adaptive parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) regulation during experiences of failure. Participants with and without clinical elevations in ADHD symptoms (N = 61; 9-13 years; 48% male; 85% Caucasian) were administered a battery of EF tests and completed manipulated social and cognitive failure tasks. While participants completed failure tasks, respiratory sinus arrhythmia reactivity (RSA-R) was measured as an indicator of PN

Changes in gastric secretion following administration of preparations affecting the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system.

The changes in gastric secretion following administration of different preparations have been studied in a group of 180 patients with duodenal ulcer and chronic gastritis. In patients with hypersecretion the medication with bishpan and inderal as compared with atropine caused considerable shifts in the indices of gastric secretion. Isoproterenol exerted a stimulating influence both on initial hyper- and hyposecretion, while the other preparations studied were shown not to cause any essential rise in gastric secretion in patients with secretory deficiency. Reliable changes of the stimulated gas

Effects of Body Mass Index on Parasympathetic Nervous System Reactivity and Recovery Following Orthostatic Stress.

Vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV), defined as the beat-to-beat fluctuations in a heart series mediated by the vagus nerve, serves as a non-invasive index of parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity. Lower resting state vmHRV is associated with greater body mass index (BMI), providing a psychophysiological pathway linking obesity with health and disease. However little research has been conducted to examine how BMI may influence PNS reactivity to orthostatic stress. The present study sought to explore this in a sample of 59 individuals (44 females, mean age = 24.37 years, age

Peripheral and central autonomic nervous system: does the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous system bear the brunt of the pathology during the course of sporadic PD?

It is a well-established fact that the sympathetic, parasympathetic and enteric nervous systems are affected at early stages in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, it is not yet clarified whether the earliest pathological events preferentially occur in any of these three divisions of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Significant involvement of the peripheral autonomic nervous system of the heart and gastrointestinal tract has been documented in PD. Accumulating evidence suggests that the PD pathology spreads centripetally from the peripheral to central nervous system through autonomic nerve f

[Participation of parasympathetic part of nervous system in realization of bioflavonoids action on gastric secretion in rats].

In this study we investigated the effects of corvitin--modified form of flavonoid quercetin on the stomach secretory function and physiological mechanisms involved in the maintenance of such effects in rat's pylorus-ligated model. In animals which corvitin was injected at a dose of 5 mg/kg, regardless of the route of administration--in the stomach or duodenum, did not observe any changes in the volume of gastric juice or general production of hydrochloric acid, compared with the control data. Dose of 40 mg/kg caused an increase in the volume of gastric juice and hydrochloric acid output as whe

Endogenous opioid involvement in the cardiovascular effects of clonidine in rats: role of the parasympathetic nervous system.

The interaction between intravenously administered clonidine and naloxone on blood pressure and heart rate was studied in urethane-anesthetized, normotensive Sprague-Dawley rats. In rats pretreated with propranolol, 1 mg/kg i.v., to eliminate sympathetic tone in the heart clonidine, 5 micrograms/kg i.v. produced hypotension and bradycardia which were inhibited by naloxone, 2 mg/kg i.v. These effects were similar to effects observed in earlier studies in the absence of propranolol. In contrast, in rats pretreated with atropine, 5 mg/kg i.v., to eliminate the effects of changes in vagal tone, th

Assessment of short-term effects of thoracic radiotherapy on the cardiovascular parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems.

BACKGROUND: Prior research suggests that cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction might be an early marker of cardiotoxicity induced by antitumor treatment and act as an early predictor of cardiovascular disease-related morbidity and mortality. The impact of thoracic radiotherapy on the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems, however, remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the short-term effects of thoracic radiotherapy on the autonomic nervous system, using deceleration capacity (DC), acceleration capacity (AC) of heart rate, and heart rate variability (HRV) as assessme

Autonomic Modulation by Electrical Stimulation of the Parasympathetic Nervous System: An Emerging Intervention for Cardiovascular Diseases.

The cardiac autonomic nervous system has been known to play an important role in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases. Autonomic modulation by electrical stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system, which increases the parasympathetic activity and suppresses the sympathetic activity, is emerging as a therapeutic strategy for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Here, we review the recent literature on autonomic modulation by electrical stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system, including vagus nerve stimulation, transcutaneous auricular vagal stimulatio

Inhibition of either the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous system increases tonic immobility duration in laying hens.

Tonic immobility (TI) is a temporary state where a chicken remains immobile after restraint. It is a commonly used fear test in research, where a longer latency to right is equated with more fear. Despite its commonality, there is limited research done on the physiological systems that underlie TI. The objective of our study was to examine the roles of the sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic nervous systems (PNS) on TI. In experiment 1, sixteen Dekalb White hens (43 weeks of age) were given 0.1 mL/kg of either saline as a control (CON), labetalol (5 mg/mL) to inhibit the SNS (LAB), or glycop
