BACKGROUND: Home death may not be equally accessible for all children with incurable cancer. Furthermore, inadequate symptom management in the home setting represents a major concern. The aims of this study were to examine: (i) the associations between parents' sociodemographic characteristics, prognostic understanding and care goals, and their child's place of death; and (ii) the associations between the child's place of death, and the parents' experiences of their child's symptom burden, end-of-life, and death.
METHODS: Nationwide retrospective cross-sectional survey among bereaved parents

BACKGROUND: The perinatal mortality review meeting that takes place within the hospital following a stillbirth or neonatal death enables clinicians to learn vital lessons to improve care for women and their families for the future. Recent evidence suggests that parents are unaware that a formal review following the death of their baby takes place. Many would welcome the opportunity to feedback into the meeting itself. Parental involvement in the perinatal mortality review meeting has the potential to improve patient satisfaction, drive improvements in patient safety and promote an open culture

OBJECTIVES.: While parental prognostic awareness is a vital concept, its complexity can sometimes be underestimated. Our study aimed to understand how parents of children with serious illness engage with the idea of their child's death from a lived experience perspective.
METHODS.: Bereaved parents of children known to a statewide pediatric palliative care service, who died at the age of 16 years or younger from any medical condition, participated in semi-structured interviews. Reflexive thematic analysis was employed, informed by a phenomenological framework.
RESULTS.: Twenty bereaved paren

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth and neonatal death are one of the most stressful life events, with negative outcomes for parents. Society does not recognize this type of loss, and parental grieving is particularly complicated and intense.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe and understand the experiences of parents in relation to professional and social support following stillbirth and neonatal death.
METHODS: This was a qualitative study based on Gadamer's hermeneutic phenomenology. Twenty-one semistructured interviews were carried out. Inductive analysis was used to find themes based on

Death and loss are often uncomfortable topics for adults to discuss with young children. Disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, however, made the avoidance of these topics nearly impossible. The current study explored how 20 parents engaged with their young children (ages 3-6) in discussions about death, dying, and loss as they jointly experienced this global crisis. Interviews were conducted both prepandemic (Summer/Fall 2019) and a year later, at the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, before vaccines were approved (Summer 2020). Results suggest parents largely sought to balance shel

BACKGROUND: Bereavement by spousal death and child death in adulthood has been shown to lead to an increased risk of mortality. Maternal death in infancy or parental death in early childhood may have an impact on mortality but evidence has been limited to short-term or selected causes of death. Little is known about long-term or cause-specific mortality after parental death in childhood.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: This cohort study included all persons born in Denmark from 1968 to 2008 (n = 2,789,807) and in Sweden from 1973 to 2006 (n = 3,380,301), and a random sample of 89.3% of all born in Finl

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a community-based workshop on birth and death, delivered by midwives for children aged 6 to 12 accompanied by one or both parents. Specifically, to analyse the adults' evaluation of the workshop and whether it modifies their attitudes towards how to approach these processes with children.
METHOD: Evaluative non-experimental pre-post intervention and qualitative study conducted in community settings across nine Spanish provinces, primarily in Cantabria. Mothers and fathers (n=185) accompanied by their children (aged 6-12, n=218) attended the workshop "To be born, to die,

This study aims to examine the prevalence and characteristics of physical, emotional and sexual childhood abuse. It also examines whether other non-abuse types of childhood adversities related to maladaptive family functioning and separations during childhood can be used as markers for the presence of childhood abuse. Participants (N = 237) were women at 2-3 days after delivery that completed the Spanish-validated version of the Early Trauma Inventory Self Report (ETI-SR; Bremner, Bolus, & Mayer, 2007; Plaza et al., 2011), designed to assess the presence of childhood adversities. Results show

IMPORTANCE: Injury is a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide. Serious mental illness (SMI) is a major contributor to the global burden of disease.
OBJECTIVE: To compare injury event rates in children from birth to 5 years of age among Taiwanese children with and without parents with SMI, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based, retrospective cohort study of an 11-year Taiwanese birth cohort used data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (covering 99% of Ta

This study examined whether the experience of the death of a parent in childhood increases risk for adult psychopathology. Participants consisted of 3481 men and women gathered through the Baltimore Epidemiologic Catchment Area study in 1981 and followed through 1994-1995. The Diagnostic Interview Survey was administered by trained interviewers and was used to assess DSM-III disorders including major depression, panic, and anxiety disorders. Maternal death was not a predictor of adult psychopathology. The death of the father during childhood more than doubled the risk for major depressive diso

Although children's psychological adaptation to parental cancer is a wide field for psycho-oncological research, few empirical studies target children bereavement specifically following parental cancer. In this paper, our purpose is to make a state of art about literature concerning parental death. Literature dealing with grief concerns psychopathological consequences of parental loss and most recently post-traumatic growth. Although references about support programs have emerged, few of these programs have been scientifically evaluated. This review underlines that more studies are needed with

This study draws on attachment theory and social learning theory and uses data from the National Survey of Families and Households to examine the differential effects of childhood family disruptions on adult well-being. Comparisons are made between adults who experienced parental divorce, adults who experienced parental death, and adults who were raised in intact families (N = 4,341). The present study differs from previous research by making direct comparisons between different family disruption groups, assessing the effects of family disruptions that occur before age 19, and including multip

Duke Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) data were used to examine the relationships between: (a) early childhood maternal death, paternal death, and parental separation/divorce, and (b) six-month DIS/DSM-III diagnoses of agoraphobia with and without panic attacks, simple phobia, social phobia, panic disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Associations were found between: (a) maternal death and agoraphobia with panic attacks, and (b) parental separation/divorce and agoraphobia with panic attacks and panic disorder. The purpose of this study was to describe parents' grief process after the death of their child caused by substance abuse. The research data were collected from parents at closed peer discussion forums online using an e-questionnaire with open-ended questions (n = 95) and seven parents were additionally interviewed. The research data were analysed using data-driven content analysis. The parents' grief process after the death of their child from substance abuse included the processing of traumatic emotional experiences, a strain on well-being and functional capacity, grieving and grief avoidanc

Offering an understanding of specialized service needs of those becoming homeless because of the death of a parent or parental figure, this project is set in Detroit's urban context, where residents face economic hardship and intergenerational poverty. In this study, we analyze the voices of practitioners (n = 5) and men (n = 5) who have experienced parental death as a contributing factor to homelessness in Detroit, Michigan. Findings include the following: (1) the impact of death and dying experiences on these men and (2) the role of care networks in these men's lives, particularly when these

Forty-five mothers and 30 fathers, representing 58 families, completed the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised, a measure of current psychological and somatic symptoms, 24 months after the death of a child with cancer. The mean scores from six symptom dimensions (somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, and hostility) and a global measure of the depth of symptomatology, the Global Severity Index, were contrasted with those of the nonpatient and psychiatric outpatient norms reported by Derogatis (1983). Two years after the child's death parents showed a sympt

The incidence of parental loss by death before the age of 15 was investigated in a series of 200 depressed patients, sub-divided into unipolars, bipolars and neurotic-reactive depressives, and in their healthy siblings at risk. The age of onset of illness of patients who had lost a parent before 15 was compared with that of depressed controls. No excess of parental loss at any age was found in any of the patient sub-groups, as compared with their healthy siblings, nor did parental loss affect the age of onset of later depression. The results do not support the assumption that the loss of eithe

The aim of this study was to determine whether the socioeconomic status (SES) of parents influences early childhood unintentional injury deaths for different injury mechanisms and the gender and age at death of the child. Study design is a population-based retrospective study. Death certificate data from 1995 to 2004 were linked to birth certificate data from 1995 to 1996 for each child who died when aged < or = 8 years. Parental age, birth order, marital status, residence area, educational level, and occupation were used as indices for SES. Cox proportional-hazards analysis was employed. Our
